Hey Everyone!! Due to limited staffing we are stepping away from this platform for a little while. This July 4th weekend we want to introduce you to a dog whose name you all already know. While the name Fido has become synonymous with the word dog, it first became popular due to Abraham Lincoln’s yellow mixed-breed. The name Fido comes from the Latin word fedelitas, meaning faithful. What is interesting to note is that Fido never actually lived in the White House. When Abraham Lincoln won the presidential election, Springfield, IL erupted into a cacophony of sound in celebration. This included fireworks and the firing of cannons. Poor Fido was scared of the noises and the family thought it would be extremely stressful on him at the capital where there would be constant noise and activity. They made the hard decision to re-home him. They eventually gave Fido to Abraham Lincoln’s long time friend John Roll, along with several requests: Fido was never to be tied up outside alone. He was a house dog and allowed inside. He was not to be scolded for muddy paws (the streets of Springfield with notoriously muddy). And he was allowed to join the Roll family for dinner. In a sad but ironic twist of fate, Fido was also “assassinated.” Not long after Lincoln’s death, Fido approached a drunken man and playfully put his paws on him as was his custom. The drunken man stabbed Fido who later died of his wounds. As you celebrate this July 4th we ask you to be considerate of animals such as Fido, as well as our many Veterans and active military members, for whom Fireworks and other such displays can be a source of trauma. Half-Tail and Zack have been living at the shelter for around 6 months. They arrived back in January. That is the equivalent of about 2.5 years in an average human lifespan. - It took 8 days to get to the moon and back - It takes about 2 months to climb Mount Everest - It takes about 6 months to walk across the U.S.A. - It would approximately take 7 months to travel to Mars Don’t make these boys wait any longer. Today is Memorial Day. We honor and remember those who gave their lives in service to our country. Something you may not be aware of are the War Dogs of the Marine Corps in WWII. Or that there is a National War Dog Cemetery and Memorial located at Naval Base Guam to honor 25 dogs who died in service of the United States Marine Corps during the second battle of Guam. PLEASE READ: Atlis is a good dog. I know what you’re thinking. They’re all good dogs. And you would be right. But some dogs need your help more than others. Atlis is one of those dogs. He’s a friendly 2 year old pitty mix who is just itching to find his new family. His previous owner unfortunately couldn’t care for him anymore which is why he came to us in the first place. Sadly, he’s having a hard time adjusting to shelter life. And to be frank - he starting to shut down. He’s anxious and bored and in dire need of much more mental and physical stimulation than we can provide. But, this big beautiful boy is happiest hanging out with people and loves to be loved on. He would be best in a home without other dogs/cats but doesn’t usually mind meeting other dogs on a walk. He would be a great walking, running, hiking, or cycling buddy. Zack & Half-tail have been at the shelter since January. These boys have come a long way since they first arrived. They have warmed up to staff and can be very playful and loving, when it suits them. Nubbles was feeling enlightened after Catnip Friday yesterday. This gorgeous Manx girl is still waiting on her forever home. She’s sweet as can be but does require a specific prescription food diet. Otherwise she has some painful tummy issues and nobody likes those. She’s lived with another cat before and would probably do well in most home environments as long as it’s not too stressful.
