“1-B did,” he says, before Kan gets a chance. “Twenty-one passes.”

“You’ve never taken the class rivalry seriously before,” Kan says, looking up from his paperwork.

“It’s not that. It’s…” the words still echo in his ears. “Something Kaminari said when they got back to the dorms, as I was leaving. He said, ‘I wish I’d been expelled, too.’”

A heaviness settles over everyone.

“I beg your pardon?” says Yagi.

“That’s what the others said, and Kaminari explained. Said he wished he’d gotten the chance that—that Midoriya had. To be in 1-B with a teacher who cares.”

And hadn’t that stung. He knows that the class doesn’t trust him, knows that they don’t like him. They’ve made that perfectly clear, especially after they seemed to bond with 1-B over it at the camp before everything went to shit. But even after the USJ, after the battle at the camp, to hear them all agreeing that he didn’t care about them?

Yagi exhales. “At least you understand.”
