Hello my long neglected blog!
Life has been quite busy since we last spoke. We got a puppy, I got a new job and I got really sick. I’m far from well, but now that Nova is almost 2 things have settled into a nice rhythm again. I’ve also bought a whole lot more comics from Shortbox.

December Sketchbook
All of these pages have related to the Crom class this month. With Christmas stresses I found it hard to draw much more but I’m hoping to change that in 2021.
For the class I had to sketch from reference strait in pen and then shade with a soft pencil. I couldn’t help adding pops of colour with pastel highlighters and paint markers. The purpose of the exercise was to get used to being free in your sketchbook and not worrying about mistakes or things looking crap. We were asked to not be precious with the sketches and deliberately overlap drawings.
I’ve started to see an improvement in my sketches and I defiantly don’t feel the pressure I used to over trying to make things perfect. Drawing with pen first was really hard to start with, the first drawings were terrible!

December Roundup
We made plans to see no one for Christmas. A couple of days later it was announced we were going back into a full lock down that would have gone against the original plan anyway. It was nice and a bit strange to spend it away from family, then I burnt the parsnips…
I’m still going with the Crom class. I’ve been starting to see an improvement in my sketchbook and the approach Crom teaches to take towards sketchbooks takes out a lot of the pressure I put on myself (even though some of it is still there a bit).
Rainylune (the queen of frogs) wrote this really eyeopening article on ‘Why your Instagram engagement kinda sucks’. It’s made me hate using Instagram a fair bit, I’m starting to prefer Twitter but I don’t know what I’m doing over there.
Hilda season 2 is on Netflix! I love this show its so cozy and heartwarming. It’s about a little girl that goes on fairly big adventures in h’er own city. The art style is beautiful yet simple with a sepia tone that just adds to the cozy feeling.

Books, Comic books & Web comics
Oran high school host club volume 1 - Still a chapter or two left of this volume. I’m not enjoying it as much as I thought. I remember binging through the anime years ago back when conventions were covered in Oran merch and cosplays.
Northern Lights (The Golden Compass)- Re-reading this as an adult felt so nostalgic. I’m going to read the rest of the series and watch the BBC adaptation too.
Home Sick Pilots issue 1 - I had no idea what this comic was going to be about before reading it. I got sucked into Caspars artwork long before it came out and just had to support it. No regrets what so ever! It’s really good, the story, the characters and oh my gosh the colours are gorgeous! Issue 2 is coming out soon and I can’t wait.
The Testaments - I read The Handmaids Tale a couple of years ago and always felt it was unfinished. The Testaments defiantly solved that problem and brought everything to a close that felt right. Getting to see story from different perspectives was really interesting.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

November Sketchbook
This was part of Gabriel Picolo’s Skillshare live class. I did forget to do my class homework 😩 He even though I provided models for us to draw on. Maybe next month I’ll do it... (The live class recording isn't up yet, but you can watch his other class still). Left is my class work and right is by Gabriel.

I really wanted to finish this illustration but I was struggling with the eyes and general motivation to draw.

As mentioned in the roundup I started Croms class at the end of the month. Here’s where I had gotten up to. I like that each class in it has ‘missions’ like non compulsory homework to keep you accountable. I’m really hoping this class gets me out of my drawing funk and fosters new habits.

November Roundup
Re-watching iZombie, I’m about half way through season 4 now. It’s still one of my favourite shows. All the characters are brilliant, especially Ravi (Rahul Kohli)
The UK is in lockdown 2.0! It’s annoying but at the same time it feels nothing like the first time, a bit half assed by the government.
Ready Player Two - I loved the first book and I probably will read this one too despite the reviews saying its pretty much the first book again. I hope the relationship between Art3mis and Wade is improved with this book. I watched the movie before reading the book and much preferred the movie ending. To me the book ending made it feel like Art3mis was Wade’s prize for completing Hallidays challenge and taking down iOi.
I stated taking an art class by CROM on Class101. I am trying really hard to pass myself and not speed through it all as it’s quite a fun class s far!

Books, Comic books & Web comics
The Constant Rabbit - This book was quite fun, I liked the concept of anthropomorphised rabbits. But I felt like it could have gone further and the ending I found disappointing. Near the start of the book the ending was hinted at but it wasn’t at all what I thought it would be.
Hot Milk - I LOVE Luchies work. Her comics crack me up, this was a really nice collection of some of them over the years.
Gideon The Ninth - “Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead bullshit.” Not what I would usually read but I loved it. Necromancers in space exploring dungeons, defiantly unexpected and I plan to read the next book too.
Long Way to a Small Angry Planet - I really enjoyed this book, it’s entertaining, hilarious, and vibrant. It had a really nostalgic feel of of Titan A.E. and Firefly. Defiantly going to read the next book.
I did a manga swap with a friend and now I have all 17 volumes of Oran high school host club to read 😱

October roundup
I feel like I’m saying it most months now, but where did October go? All of a sudden it was November. I’m not even sure I know what I did in October other than enjoy seeing all the spoopy things people did.
A vinyl toy I pre-ordered a while back arrived. It’s the dumpster fire by 100% soft and it 100% sums up this year! It’s just a little too cute for 2020
Meds started a new art challenge for Autumn. So far I’ve only done a couple of drawings but its been fun. You can find them on my socials.

Locked In - I’m back at it with another Scalzi book, and as usual it was really good. Is he now my favourite author? Just maybe. No aliens this time but plenty of, best way to say it is robots. This book defiantly made me think about what the future could be like and how it could be more accessible.

September Sketchbook
I found I wasn’t in the mood to draw much in September. I put a lot of pressure on myself to only show finished pieces and always finish a sketch. You can see Septembers finished illustrations over on my Instagram and Twitter.
These heads are some quick warmup studies from Ahmed Aldoori’s LightBox class.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is as far as I get with drawing a Tiefling for the class challenge. Maybe I will finish it one day, but I’m not going to put pressure on myself.

September roundup
I have no idea where this month has gone. It feels like the month only started last week and yet I have nothing to show for it.
The Kickstarter I backed by Shortbox arrived and it’s gorgeous. Shortbox is an independent comic book publisher. A couple of times a year they put out a box of new comics. Every single one is truly unique and beautiful (I will write about them later in the month) https://www.shortbox.co.uk
Lightbox Expo has defiantly been a highlight of the month. I learnt a lot over the weekend it was on, I really hope they I’m still making my way through all the videos I saved.
These are just a couple of my favorites from the weekend:
Social Media For Artists Presented by DeviantArt
Creating the Illustrated Novel
Lightbox 2020 - Day 3 - Character Design Stream
Dorohedoro - I LOVED this anime! A lot of people are talking about it at the moment and rightly so! It’s mad and dystopian with a really unique premise. I really liked that the women in it are strong characters and not in anyway the typical anime waifu’s.
Tumblr media
Books, Comic books & Web comics
Witchcraft - This webcomic by Jawsum on Tapas, definitely worth a read. It’s beautifully drawn and the story is nice and heartwarming. She has really interesting looking characters and a unique style (ooof the colours are stunning). The story was recently finished, 100% give it a read!
Station Eleven - I had very high hopes from this book as a lot of people had been rating it highly. I have to admit I was left a bit disappointed, yet equally glad I didn’t read it at the start of the year when I first heard about it. I would have been an even more terrified creature during the pandemic than I already was. The one thing I did really enjoy was the way the characters were all connected to each other in ways they didn’t know.
In The Miso Soup - I had high hopes for this book but ultimately it was disappointing. It had slight American Psycho feel to it but the character was more annoying and felt like he lacked depth. You know what the general plot is from the books blurb, despite that I was expecting there to be some twists and turns, but there were none. Overall a fairly disappointing read.
Agent to the Stars - The is the second John Scalzi book I’ve read this year and I’m really loving his stories. Agent to the stars was truly hilarious and unexpected. Scalzi makes brilliantly endearing characters. I never though sci-fi was my thing till now.

August roundup
A little round up of what I’ve been up to and reading.
I dyed the ends of my hair purple :D
Lush have a subscription box, I got my first box this month. It’s been fun trying different things
Placebo have been created a virtual festival on YouTube called ‘Lost Tapes’, it’s been awesome listening to the evolution of the band.
I finally decided to get Pokemon for the switch. I had been put off it for a while but after seeing how all the Pokemon run around in the wild I just had to.
Tumblr media
Books, Comic books & Web comics
Motor Crush - I couldn’t stop reading and I can’t wait for the next issue in December. Oooof the artwork and colours it’s all so rich and vibrant. Action comics aren’t usually my thing but I was really drawn in by the unique characters and setting.
They both die at the end - I didn’t expect to like this book as much as I did. I cried at the end even though I knew what was coming. It was simple yet said so much about trying to live life to the fullest.
Don’t go without me - This indie comic is STUNNING! Rosemary Valero O-Connell is a fantastic artist, every single panel was packed full of detail and it was just overwhelmingly beautiful as n every way.
Let’s play - I completely binged this WEBTOON and can’t wait for the 3rd season to start. Originally the art style and synopsis put me off but I was bored so gave it a go. I wish I had checked it out sooner, I completely fell in love with the characters and the way Mongie portrays hidden emotions as characters is something I’ve never seen before. Very highly recommend checking it out.
