As someone that has grown up surrounded by beaches and done surf life saving, I know how the sea works. Lots of people dont. Every summer multiple tourists die here because they don’t respect the sea, if you’re going to the coast, here’s a thing I saw on Facebook.

Sorry if I'm bothering you, but.... I'm that one post you said cats shouldn't be outdoor cats and I was wondering why? Isn't it good to let them move around outside since they enjoy it?

This is legitimately a huge (and still somewhat controversial) topic and I don’t really have the time to go into it in a lot of detail right now but here is a quick summary: 

- Cats are damaging to local ecosystems. Well-fed pet cats still enjoy hunting and end up killing not for food but for fun and to practice their hunting skills. It’s a natural instinct, not malice, but it can absolutely devastate local songbird and wildlife populations.  

- Outdoor cats are at MUCH higher risk of injury from vehicles, other animals, or even ill-intentioned humans (we once rescued a black cat with a broken tail I’m 99% sure had been broken by a group of kids swinging her around by her tail)

- Outdoor cats are at greater risk for contracting communicable diseases like Feline HIV

- Outdoor cats can get lost or even stolen (I’ve had both happen to me before)

- Outdoor cats are at higher risk of suffering from the elements (getting caught in snowstorms, freezing to death, etc.) 

- Outdoor cats are much more likely to contract parasites like fleas, ticks, and worms

- It is much more difficult to spot irregularities in your cat’s health if they are regularly outdoors (you can’t monitor how frequently they urinate or defecate, and whether or not there are any changes to their bathroom habits)

- Outdoor cats are more likely to end up consuming something dangerous (rat poison, spoiled food, etc.)

- Outdoor cats who are not fixed are likely to increase the feral cat population by getting pregnant/impregnating other cats. 

In general, outdoor cats are damaging to local ecosystems and at great risk of premature death. 

Now, that’s not to say you can’t find ways to let your cats enjoy the outdoors, though! Here are some fun solutions: 

Catios: 

Cat harnesses (yes, cats can be taught to walk on leashes!)

Cat-safe plants for nibbles and noms:

Cat “TV” (ie shelves or seats near windows where cats an easily observe the outdoors from the safety of inside)

Basically domestic cats are not safe outside alone, nor is it safe for the local wildlife to have them there in numbers. There is a lot of information out there discussing this you can find on google (and like I said, there are people who disagree) but these are the main reasons I tend to encourage people keeping indoor cats, ESPECIALLY if you are in an urban or residential (non-rural) area where risk of traffic collision is high.

So this is coming from a conversation I was having with a friend just now. I’m not telling you who cause that’s personal but a topic came up that I really really really need to talk about. 

Please please please for the love of god if your kid comes to you and tells you they are upset do not tell them to “deal with it” or “Suck it up” cause that makes them feel like what their feeling doesn’t matter to you and might cause them to not want to come to you about anything.

If you hear your kid crying don’t open the door and stand in the doorway and ask them what their problem is. Don’t stand there with a hand on your hip and look at them impatiently. Don’t tell them you’re not leaving until they tell you their problem cause that makes them feel pressured and nobody likes feeling pressured especially if they’re already upset to begin with. They will come to you when they’re ready to and yes it may take a while but they will.

I’ve been in this situation many times where I had my mom stand in my doorway and do the exact same thing and I can tell you it’s not comforting or helpful at all. I understand that most parents/guardians may feel like they’re helping but standing at a distance and looking at them impatiently with an annoyed tone doesn’t do shit. Hell my mom would start counting down if I wouldn’t tell her and that sure as hell didn’t help at all.

Never tell your kid to deal with something or to suck it up cause that makes them feel like they can’t come to you about something that’s truly bothering them.

If your kid comes to you with a problem don’t you dare say “Deal with it” don’t you dare say “That’s just the way life is” because yes it may be the way life is but that does not mean you can ignore their problem and brush it off.

If your kid comes to you excited about something don’t tease them about it. Don’t mock them, don’t make fun of them in anyway.

“Oh but we’re family we’re allowed to tease each other” yes, but only every now and then. If you’re constantly teasing and making fun of your kid or even your sibling for liking something you’re no longer just teasing and you’re just being an asshole.

“He’s your brother, he’s just doing it to get a reaction from you” that doesn’t mean it’s still okay. Again, every now and then is fine. But if it’s all the time? Fucking stop. Even if you are related it doesn’t mean you have special privilege to be an asshole. 

“If you give them a reaction you’re just letting them win” How about instead of teaching people not to react when they’re being harassed you fucking teach people not to harass others. Telling someone to ignore someone because “Reacting gives them power” is bullshit and can actually make the tormentor angry and hurt them more and may even lead up to physical harassment if it hasn’t already.

“You can’t change how they are. You can only change how you act about it.” I was told this recently when a guy was (and still is) harassing and borderline stalking me and my friends and I get what they’re trying to say, but at the same time they are only encouraging him to continue it. They have done nothing to stop it except tell us repeatedly to ignore him but news flash IGNORING THE PROBLEM WON’T MAKE IT GO AWAY.

People, especially older ones, need to understand the fact that just because it may have worked for some people doesn’t mean it will work for everyone. Not everybody is going through the same thing. Not everybody has the same mindset.

If your kid tells you that they have a mental problem don’t tell them “You’re too young to have that problem” don’t say “That’s not something you want to label yourself as” or “I don’t know why you think that because I have given you everything you’ve wanted and needed” you wouldn’t believe often I’ve heard people say that one. Don’t say “You don’t know true pain unless you’re an adult” Don’t say “Yeah? Well this happened to me and I managed to survive”

Just because someone broke their arm doesn’t mean you should have to deal with pain in your wrist.

Please please please if your kid comes to you with a problem don’t brush them off. Don’t tell them to ignore it. Don’t try to make them feel like shit and make them feel weak for feeling the way they do because I can assure you it’s very damaging and can affect them in the long run.

The same thing goes for adults who have had to grow up with that type of treatment and are still suffering even now.

What may not mean much to you may mean a lot to them.

And if there is anyone who reads this and has been through the same thing or something similar. I am so sorry and I want you to know that not only do I care about you so much but so do other people even if you don’t believe it.

This seems like a stupid question, but how do you add links to ao3? I see fics where in the notes they say "and find me on tumblr here" and "here" is a link - I'm not sure how to do that, and I'm not sure what it's called so I havent been successful in looking it up. Id also like to do the same on tumblr, if at all possible. A little help, please?

Not a stupid question at all! 

How to use links on Ao3

Ao3 allows some limited html in their summaries/notes/user profile and comments, including links. So, basically, you have to use the HTML code for links:

<a href="paste_here_the_link_address">Text you click on</a>

an example of this could be:

<a href="https://archiveofourown.org/works/30918077">Dyslexia Friendly Skin</a>

or:

<a href="https://ao3skin.tumblr.com/">Come hang out with me on tumblr!</a>

Be sure that the address has the https:// at the beginning! (or http:// without the s)

I suggest saving the code in a note and copy/pasting it when you want to use it. Or in the future if you want to google it you can just search ‘html link’ and it should come up in some page. Unless you want to learn some basic html (which I suggest! it’s fun! and useful! and you’ll use it on a LOT of websites because it’s the basic language of the web. For example, it’s the very same way you add link in your tumblr description) 

Other html code you can use in notes and comments are:

<b>This text is going to be bold</b> but this isn’t.

<i>This text is going to be italic</i> and this is not.

<u>This text is going to be underlined</u> but this is normal.

note the fact that these are always made by a tag that starts the ‘effect’ and then the ‘closing’ tag always has a slash / in it! It tells the browser to stop the ‘effect’ there and go back to normal text!

If you want, there’s also the tag to include images, but I think that one won’t work on summaries (for obvious reasons... imagine scrolling a tag and then HUGE IMAGES IN A SUMMARY. no. pls don’t.) but I know for a fact that it works in comments. You’ll have to have the image hosted somewhere else though and get the link of the image (make sure the link of the image always ends in something like .jpg or .png or .gif or it won’t work)

In tumblr posts is way easier. You write your text and then select the text you want to transform in a link and these icons will come up:

It’s the 4th icon, the one with that sort of skewed infinity symbol/8. I think it’s supposed to be a chain-link. 

and this will come up and you paste the link here.

Instead, if you want to add links on your description you use the html way! On mobile it’s pretty much the same. Select the text and search for the icon that looks like a weird chain-link and paste the url.

COVID is slowly becoming a "third world" disease. While first world countries are hoarding vaccines, having doses for populations many times their size, third world countries can't get any because pharma companies want to sell to the first world countries first. Even then, first world countries will receive them first. While rich countries recover from COVID, they will forget about the pandemic while many other countries live the absolute worst moment of the pandemic without being able to vaccinate their population.

I was at the store today and overheard an older woman complaining about Canada day being canceled and saying "This stuff happened a hundred years ago".

No. It did not. It's happening today.

Indigenous people in this country are still facing discrimination. Most are without clean drinking water on reservations and hundreds of indigenous women and girls are missing and murdered.

Oh, and by the way, the last residential school was closed down in 1997. The year after I was born. That's only 24 years.

This is not a dark chapter from our past. This is happing to my family, my friends, and so many people who deserve better.

Fellow non Indigenous people, please do better. Stop ,listen ,and help out.

The total of undocumented graves of children who died and were killed in Indian residential schools is now at 1515. UNDOCMENTED, there are already over 6000 on the record. There are still over 130 other schools to investigate still. And, just so Canadians understand...given the current numbers, 7323+ children, if Canada was to lower it's flag to half-mast for one day for each child, as the numbers stand today the flag would not rise for over 20 years. Even if they were to lower it for one hour for every child, that would be 305 days. I hope this paints a very clear image. I am hurt, my community is hurting, our nations are mourning, and we have been in mourning for years. I pray this does not fall on deaf ears. Non-indigenous Canadians, you no longer have an excuse to claim ignorance. You can no longer say "I had no idea Canada did this." It did. And in many ways Canada continues this opression and genocide to this day.

I’m also thinking about those who never came home. So many never came home. Today I’m spending this time with family and just being with them. 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡

What happens once you kill yourself? Because I'm ready to go.

You wanna know what happens once you kill yourself? Your mother comes home from work and finds her baby dead and she screams and runs over to you and tries to get you to wake up but you won’t and she keeps screaming and shaking you and her tears are dripping onto your face and your dad hears all the screaming and runs into the room and he can’t even speak because the child that he loved and the child that he watched grow up is gone forever and finally your little sister runs into the room to see what all the fuss is about and she sees you dead. The person she looked up to and loved. The person she bragged about to  her friends, the person she wanted to be just like when she grew up, the person that made her feel safe. But she’s never really going to get to grow up and smile and laugh and love because she’ll always be consumed with this feeling of missing you. And now there’s something missing from your family and they can barely look at each other anymore because everything reminds them of you but you’re gone and hurts more than anything. and you think that your mom never cared because she was always busy and yelling at you to finish your homework and clean your room and forgot to say I love you sometimes but really, she loved you more than anything and she doesn’t leave the house anymore, she can’t even get out of bed and she’s getting thinner and thinner because it’s too hard to eat. Your father had to quit his job and he doesn’t sleep anymore, every time he closes his eyes he sees his baby dead, and the image never goes away no matter how much alcohol he drinks. And at school your best friend sees that your seat is empty and she gets this sick feeling in her stomach and that’s when she hears the announcement. You killed yourself. And suddenly she’s screaming and crying in the middle of class and no one even bothers comforting because they’re all  busy sitting there staring at your empty seat with tears dripping down their cheeks and all she wants is for you to hug her and tell her it’s gonna be okay like you always did, but this time, you’re not there to do it, everything is dark now that you’re gone and her grades are slipping, she barely goes to school anymore and she ended up in hospital after taking too many pills because she wanted to see you again. the girls who used to make fun of the way you dressed feel their throats get tight, they don’t talk to each other anymore, they don’t talk to anyone, they’re all in therapy trying so hard not to blame themselves but nothing works. and your teacher who always gave you a hard time stares blankly at the wall, she quits her job a few days later. And then your boyfriend hears the news and he can’t breathe, he still calls you a lot just to hear your voice and he talks to you on facebook but you never message him back, he can’t fall in love again because every girl he meets reminds him of you, he’s never going to get over you, he loved you and he cries himself to sleep every night, hating himself and slicing his skin because he couldn’t save you and he’s never going to hold you in his arms or hear you laugh again. Now everyone who knew you, whether they were a big part of your life or someone you passed in the hallway a few times a week, they carry this aching feeling around inside them because you’re gone, and they miss you, and they don’t know why you left but it must’ve been their fault and they should’ve stopped you and they should’ve told you they loved you more and that feeling is never going to go away. And so you killed yourself

but you killed everyone else around you too.
