Thank you very much, Prof. Vanad, and you too for the addition Prof. Maple!
Hello Professor Vanad! Rather urgent one for you I'm afraid. I've recently taken in a Bronzor, as its trainer couldn't really handle the poor dear's powers, but this has left me in a bit of a bind myself, as I'm not entirely sure how to... feed it. I have yet to see anything that looks like a mouth, and it doesn't seem interested in the standard fare most of my psychic types enjoy. Do they eat? Should I get some steel type food in? Crack open a can of brass polish for it?
Hey there, Professor!
You’re in luck, Bronzor don’t need to eat! As far as we’ve been able to tell, Bronzor don’t really have a digestive system at all, in fact. Or bones. Or glands. Or tissue. All attempts to scan their internal systems have come back with nothing. Literally nothing. They are one of the best examples of an inorganic pokémon that we have.
But seeing as you mentioned polish, I think I should mention the trade-off here. Not having to worry about food is great but Bronzor still need a fair bit of looking after. See, most Bronzor tend to care a lot about their appearance and, contrary to nearly every other steel-type, they love a good grooming routine. Chances are if this Bronzor has been living wild, they have some idea of how to look after themselves but I’d recommend getting involved if they’re open to it. It makes for great bonding time between Bronzor and their trainers and it’s a good way to inspect any scratches or damage without being too invasive.
It’s also important to note that Bronzor are composed almost exclusively of bronze. So just like bronze jewellery or antiques, they will develop a patina. There are several different colours of patina that will show up but the most common kind you’ll see on a Bronzor is that sort of dark blue-green colour.
And Bronzor love it. Seriously. They’re proud of their patina. They get excited when it first builds up. They like watching it grow and change hues. They get upset then it has to be cleaned off (which is sometimes necessary when they need repairs done). Some get attached to specific shades and patterns they acquire and try to maintain them. They also hate grime and dirt when it makes their coat look grody.
So how do you clean the grime off but keep the patina? Believe it or not, it’s a bath. As in warm-water-soft cloth-and-the-mildest-most-gentle-soap you can get kinda bath. I’m very much stressing the “gentle” here. No scrubbing, no harsh sulphates, no special coating. Even the oils on your fingers can mess this up. If you live in a hard water area, you should use distilled or filtered water for any rinsing. It’s like cleaning a priceless antique. You’ll need to use a soft brush to clear off any dry dirt (paintbrushes are ideal). Then, fill a basin or tub or whatever you have with warm soapy water and just wipe away any dirt as carefully as you can. Once you rinse, dry off immediately. Leaving water to set on Bronzor’s coat will mess with the oxidisation and leave marks.
Thank you for the ask. Bronzor is a real favourite of mine so I’m always happy to share advice on caring for them. I don’t doubt that your new mate will have some extra tips for you too! Best of luck to both of ye and if you have any more questions, my askbox is always open!

Hello! Are there good meals that my ghost pokemon and I can eat together?
Hello!
There’s many meals you and your pokemon can eat together- assuming you’re interested in a junk food binge!
While ghost pokemon can eat, for the most part, everything (quite literally- some pokemon even eat departed souls! Spooky!), their favorite treats are, well, treats!
That is to say, if there’s any discount Halloween candy left in any pokestore you’re near, buy as many as you can!
Of course, you could also simply create normal people food, but sweets are every ghost’s weak spot, and really, who doesn’t want an excuse to eat a pound of candy in one night?

Hello! I have a bit of a delemia on my hands my haunter Mary-Ann wants to evolve into gengar but I don't have anyone I can trust well enough to trade her over and trade back and Mary-Ann hates pokeballs with a fiery passion so I was wondering if there were any alternative ways to evolve her without trade or pokeballs involved?
Hello!
Unfortunately, to date, only trade has been proven to hold the power to evolve a Haunter into a Gengar, however, there are some unproven rumours that the Evolutionary Stones produced in certain regions, due to unknown factors, can mimic that particular form of energy. For various reasons, trade in stones from these regions is either prohibited, or highly restricted (much to my irritation, as I would LOVE to get my hands on some).
That being said, if you can make an appointment to come up to the lab, I would personally be delighted to arrange a trade-return with you. Normally we professors are... discouraged from doing so, but nothing makes me happier than seeing a pokemon reaching the potential it wants to reach, and for some bizarre reason my slowpoke, Swapsie, really enjoys being traded back and forth, as long as he ends up back with me.

Hi there. I have an Umbreon and Sylveon pair, they can't mate (both boys) and they have recently adopted a newly hatched Misdreavous. This is not a problem other than the Misdreavous doesn't seem to like my Sylveon at all. They tend to attack him, even though they only have basic attacks like Spite and Mean Look, and it is really making my Sylveon depressed as the care has to be left to his mate. Is there anything I can do to help the baby bond to the other parent?
Hello there Nonny.
Now this is a complex one. One would anticipate there being more fear of your Umbreon, given the Ghost type's inherent weakness to Dark types, but there have been theories and studies that show an antagonist relationship between Ghost and Fairy for some time (such as the Clefable/Gengar correlation theory). We're not entirely sure what causes this antagonism as yet, but I've seen it being a problem between my various Ghosts and Lily the Florges that's on my team for assistance and defensive purposes (apart from Nevergreen, who adores her due to how much care she takes of his plant components).
That being said, misdreavous is as mischievous as their name implies, and love to pull pranks. I would say liaise with both pokemon separately, plan a prank with your misdreavous and encourage your sylveon to take it with grace, but in a manner that's funny. Use this as a means to open the two up to each other, then encourage some night time play with a minimal amount of light between the two of them, supervise it and let your umbreon take a little break from the care for a while, as it will be effecting him as much as it is your sylveon.
Hope this helps!

Hello again Professor! Thank you for the advice, it's proved instrumental. A larger, dominant spirit within Evo's keystone does exist. The spirit, who my lab assistants have taken to calling "Ove", has been dormant for well over 100 years, and only recently reawakened. The reason the keystone kept going back to the well is because Ove is a solitary spirit, as it were. We have negotiated a deal between him and Evo, he gets control at night, Evo gets the day. Thanks again for your help. -Maple
Not at all, Professor! I'm glad things worked out for you, Evo, and Ove. Ghost pokemon aren't the easiest to work with, and ones comprised of multiple spirits can be even trickier still. I hope the relationship between you and your spiritomb continues to grow, and perhaps in time, Ove will begin to open up to you as well!

Hello! I need some advice. I am in college, doing my thesis paper on Ape-Like Pokemon. My starter was even a Chimchar when I was a boy, but I also have an Oranguru for my research. I haven't had him as long as my now Infernape, and while the Oranguru and I are pretty much on the same wave lengths when alone, he violently attacks my Infernape when they are in the same space. I have tried everything from snacks, to positive reinforcement, to even practice battles, is there anything I can do?
Hello there, dear researcher.
Oranguru tend to be very solitary creatures, only tending to congregate when it is time to mate. As I understand it, infernape tend to be more social, and while the oranguru may see you as a friend or superior, in your infernape it likely sees a competitor for space or resources, with an assumption that if doesnt discourage the infernape from lingering, they may bring more and push the oranguru out of its territory.
In this particular case, its probably best to keep them separate as much as possible, or at the very least have some form of barrier between them until your oranguru realises that this competition is unnecessary and settles down. Remember that sharing an egg group does not necessarily mean they share behaviours.

Hi, professor! I have a question about a Mimikyu. I work at an electricity ranch, we have lots of Mareep and Blitzle, but we also have a mischief of Pikachu, Pichu and a couple Raichu that help on the farm, and a Mimikyu has appeared in this mischief out of nowhere! I have no idea what to do for her, she doesn't seem to like the same food we give the Chu's, she wont come out of the run in the day time when everyone else goes (1
Ah Mimikyu, such a sweet and often misunderstood pokemon.
In terms of food, they won't tend to like the same as most electric or rodent type pokemon, as they are neither of these things. If you can, try and get hold of food designed for amorphous type pokemon such a ditto or castform. As ghost types, they don't need to eat as often, but they still appreciate being fed. Mimikyu dress as pikachu because they're lonely, and believe the costume will bring them friends that would fear their actual form, and this one sounds no different, likely joining the mischief in search of friends. They are sensitive to light however, so they'll avoid going out in the day.
Try making a shady area in the run for your new friend to hang out in during the day, and encourage your 'chu to interact with them. They may initially see the newcomer as something unusual and frightening, but they can be very friendly, and if you make a point of playing with them yourself, or including them in group play, then your other 'chu will soon warm up to them.
If their costume becomes damaged, they can become upset and distressed. Offer them help and materials if you can to alleviate it, and make a point of not trying to peek underneath. Sit with your back to them and pass them thread, material and crayons. If you know how to sew, make a point of doing it where they can see you and they may approach you directly for help with their costume. At all costs, do NOT look underneath their costume. They try their best, bless them, but their skill at craftsmanship is limited, and if you can help them look more like a pikachu, they will be absolutely delighted.
Be prepared for hugs.

Finally a week later, these ghostly wax babies are finished. I decided I’de like to try out the pokemon variety meme, so I chose one of my favourites, Litwick, after I looked up images of candles and their scents for character design reference. It was time-consuming but fun.
UPDATE!! : new variations of scented litwicks can be found here!: http://neonluxi.tumblr.com/post/162778785910/a-sequel-to-the-first-litwick-variations-i-posted

Thanks a ton for the advice, Professor!! I asked my partner, Blossom (a Meganium!) to help me grow a few plants for Wisp to feed off of, and it worked like a charm! Everyone got a great rest, and Wisp is doing better than ever knowing he's not feeding off friends anymore! :)
That's wonderful to hear! Send Wisp, Blossom and the rest of your team my best regards, and don't be shy about approaching me if you ever need more help regarding ghost or psychic types.

Hey, um, I know your blog says you research Ghost types, but I found a Frolass in Alola's desert area, and she isn't doing well. I have my Glalie keep near her and use any ice abilities to keep her cool, but as I'm also abit lost, can I have any advice? Also, I'm originally from Hoenn, and stupidly didn't ask to sign up for the Ride Pokemon thing.
Froslass is still a ghost type, and a personal favourite of mine dear Nonny, but the one you've encountered sounds either very lost, or perhaps abandoned, though if it's the latter, then the location is perhaps one of the cruellest cases of abandonment I've seen.
In either case, keeping her cool would be the highest priority until you can get to a pokemon centre, where she can be checked for heatstroke and other forms of damage she could have suffered in a high-temperature environment. If you have any burn heals on hand, they will go a long way to alleviating things for her. If possible, try to get her into a pokeball, battle her if necessary, but if your glalie can encourage her into one of her own accord, even better. Your next step, if you're very lost, is to get in contact with the local Ranger service to help guide you to the nearest town.
And do sign up to the Ride service, it's very useful, and you can even ride a stoutland!

Professor! I need help! I have a spiritomb that has recently been stealing in my neighborhood. Oddly, the only things she steals are things that are reflective like mirrors or windows panes but she sneaks off at night and breaks into peoples houses, destroying their stuff, to get them. She likes to hoard them in my basement. My neighbors are livid and I've lost alot of money to repair/replace their belongings. I try to keep her in her pokeball but she always busts out. What should I do?
Goodness, spiritomb do seem to be the subject of the day don't they? Take a moment to look at my answer to Prof Maple's question regarding spiritomb in regards to the collective spirit activity of these pokemon as well as my answer to this one.
It may be the case that your spiritomb may have an emotional connection to a certain mirror. Think back to when these behaviours started, was there an antique mirror in your house that was broken, sold or stolen around that time? Your spiritomb may be attempting to replicate or reclaim it, and the property damage may be a result of certain spirits being angry that they cannot find the right one. If this is the case, try to reclaim, repair or recreate the mirror in question.
It may also be a dormant, strong spirit or collective that has recently awakened, with a more malevolent personality and kleptomaniac/narcissistic tendencies. If this is the case, work with the dominant spirits of your spiritomb to try and bring this spirit to the fore, if you have access to a strong psychic type, use them as a medium, or bring them up to the lab if convenient and we can try to mediate for you.

Hello Professor! Pleasure to make a fellow Pokemon researchers acquaintance. I just like to say I love your blog, and to keep up the good work! My ask revolves around my Spiritomb, Evo. I found her about 6 years ago, near a very old well on the land of what is now my lab. We became close, and she later joined my team. However, recently she's gone missing several times, and her and her keystone always appear later around or in the well. She herself has no idea what happens, and I'm at a loss.
Delighted to hear from you professor! Fossil and ancient type research, while well out of my field in most cases, is certainly a fascinating one.
As for your Evo, remember that spiritomb are comprised of around 108 spirits inside that keystone. Over time, some of them merge or form collective groups that act together, but particularly strong personalities may choose to remain individual as well. It's possible that, while most of these mergers, collectives and individuals are more than happy to be bonded with you, there may be a few stong ones who have been dormant for a while, and have started to awaken and, when in overall control of the keystone, have returned to what they consider to be 'their' territory, or a place of importance for them.
If Evo starts to display behaviours that seem unfamiliar, it's likely that one of these dormant spirits have come to the fore. Simply remain polite and open, bond with them as you have with the primary spirits, and eventually these behaviours may stop. If not, then perhaps allocate some time to simply be by that well with Evo, make it your break spot, have picnics there. It's clear that there's some emotional connection to that place. If you can, try to find out more about the history of the well as well, addressing any unfinished business there, performing certain rites, or just generally becoming more knowledgeable about the area will do wonders for Evo's general happiness!

Hallo Professor! I've picked up a crying phantump recently from the forest, and they've grown very attached to me, resembling a young child quite a lot. Is there anything special I need to look out for? I want to make sure they're as happy and comfortable as can be
Well, many people do still believe that phantump are the spirits of children, there's no hard evidence of this, but they do show behaviours consistent with human children in a lot of ways. Generally speaking though, just spend time with them! Phantump tend to get very attached to trainers willing to put in the time with them, playing games and reading them stories particularly will lead to you having a very happy ghost on your hands, but even just relaxing with them will definitely improve your bonds. That being said, they are naturally fearful of flame, so avoid having candles or open flames around them, and don't try and force interactions with any fire types you may have.

Yo, Professor! I could use a bit of help; My team likes to sleep with/around me at bedtime, which is normally fine, but Wisp, my adorable little litwick, can't quite control his life absorption. This has lead to the team and I as a whole beginning to lose sleep, and while Wisp is thriving, the rest of us aren't. Is there any way that we could help him control it? I don't want to forcefully exclude him...
Ah litwick, such an adorable little pokemon, but that method of feeding causes so many problems. Having it spread over multiple individuals will be causing you fewer problems than if one of you was bearing the brunt of Wisp's midnight snacks. We've been doing some quite extensive research on how best to handle it, and we've discovered that, while they do require life force, it doesnt have to be from a human or pokemon, and they can absorb it from plants. If you have a garden, then take little Wisp outside for a while before bed, let them hang out near your plants for a while, again, having it spread out like that will alleviate a lot of issues, though you will need to up your watering and fertilising a bit in order to keep up with it, and of course, watch out for that little flame.
If you don't, then I recommend getting a houseplant for Wisp to feed off, you'll have to replace it once a week or so due to the more focused feeding, but if you have a particularly nurturing grass type, then you can create a nice loop of them nurturing the plant, and the plant feeding Wisp, and Wisp not slurping up your collective life force when you're all asleep. If you can get a few plants, and spread them out in your room, then this will further blunt the feeding effect if they get hungry while you're all asleep as well!

Hi Professor! Yesterday I saw about 20 drifloon and 5 drifblim rushing by before they went above the clouds. Are they going anywhere in particular?
Hello there!
Considering the nomadic nature of drifloon and drifblim, wherever the wind takes them! They do tend to drift from habitat to habitat depending on weather conditions and changes in environment, as they prefer damp, humid conditions. The drifblim themselves are very much beholden to the winds, so the drifloon will be travelling with them to help them steer!

Hi, professor! I am an aspiring variant researcher who recently came into ownership of a single Chandelure, no variation but he seems a little more cuddly than a battle Pokemon dictates, which might be why he was left with me, but my question is that wild Litwick and Phantumps have begun to appear, all seeking him out but they also seem terrified of him? Is there any way I can help him make friends with other ghost types?
Hello dear nonny. A pokemon that's been raised with care, even when they've primarily been fighting, will always tend towards being affectionate with their trainer. Of course, the litwick line does feed off life force, though it's hardly as dangerous as the pokedex implies, usually leading more to feelings of tiredness in the short term, but encouragement of rapid regeneration of it in the longer term.
In the wild, higher-level evolutions tend to be treated with respect and deference by lower-level ones, and depending on the personality of the pokemon, they can tend to throw their weight around and intimidate their peers. In order to make them seem more approachable, play with them! If these litwick and phantump see your chandelure out enjoying themselves and having fun, they'll feel safer and more comfortable approaching to join in their games. If there's several litwick approaching, let chandelure take the lead and give them some space, or you risk too many excited pokemon draining too much life force, and leaving you exhausted and drained.
If this works, then watching chandelure and litwick dancing together is a light show like no other! Be sure to leave out some snacks for them all, the phantump especially, and you'll have a happy little haunting in your garden.
