I need blader friends
Now that I’m 30 and don’t give a fuck if people think I’m cool or not, I’ve realized one thing:
I need friends to geek out with about Beyblade (both the anime and the toys) -- the plastic gen mostly, but also friends to help me get into the later gens (Metal saga and Burst saga). I just bought my first Metal saga beys, and I’ve got the urge to play again.
This might go nowhere, but I figured I’d throw it out into the void. So, if you’re out there, fellow adult bladers (21+), I’m here.

The first gen (Beyblade, Beyblade: V-Force, and Beyblade: G-Revolution) absolutely still holds up. It plays like any sports anime where you want to root for the protagonists, but adds a fun shonen supernatural/fantasy element. The characters all have depth and desires and flaws, and watching their journeys pays off in the end.
Also, protagonist Tyson’s (or Takao’s, depending on if you’re watching the dub or the sub) teammates don’t hero worship him. Max, Ray, and Kai all recognize he’s a kid, just like the rest of them, with the same chances of being the World Champion as they have. They see him as friendly competition, and when his ego goes to his head, they are the first to call him out. Their interactions feel genuine and I really miss their dynamic in later gens (Metal and Burst characters just don’t have the same feel).
The first season is a classic. and the second season, V-Force, is the weakest of the three, but it’s still good. The third season, G-Revolution, though, is the culmination of everything and certainly feels like the perfection of the sports/fantasy genre that Beyblade is.
Absolutely recommend to any shonen or sports anime fan.
Season 1: 8/10
Season 2: 7/10
Season 3: 9/10
(Also, while I usually prefer the sub, I grew up on the English dub, and I gotta say it isn’t bad -- at least, not like it is in later gens. The sub feels somewhat more mature in its writing than the dub, which was definitely watered down for kids.)

I remember being 10 and thinking Beyblade was good, so I rewatched it a bit recently and its still good.

“The Perfect Heist Hack”
Fun Fact: I modified a pair of pants for this sketch so I could hold 30 feet of rope and a full-sized grappling hook in the pant leg. Useful!

Sometimes I think abt Billie Joe Armstrong and I get so emotional. Does he know how many kids he gave the courage to come out as bisexual. How many people saw him and realized they were like him. Realized there were people like us and he told us what that was and it was Bisexual loud and proud and fuck you if you’ve got a problem with that

Summer camp production of Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. I’m cast in the role of Willy Wonka, which is a huge deal for me as my first ever leading role, so I spend a stupid amount of time making sure I have my lines down, and I’m off book by the 2nd week of rehearsals.
Opening night performance goes off without a hitch, and we’re all feeling pretty confident.
Second performance. My very first scene, I’m supposed to welcome all the children and their parents to the factory as they all introduce themselves one by one, and I’m so certain that I’ve got this that my brain goes on autopilot for bit and I completely flub a line. Now I have to go backwards in the script in my brain and I panic so much that I freeze. I end up repeating the previous line, and now I’ve introduced Augustus Gloop’s mom as two different people.
The actress playing Violet’s dad, who is now apparently also Augustus’s second mom, tries to save the scene by quietly starting to stammer “I... I’m not...” but instead of trying to recover in any way, I quickly blurt out. “Just -- just go over there, whoever you are.” while ushering her behind me. Cue audience laughter.
Apparently my director went to see a production of West Side Story a few years ago, and the guy playing Chino forgot his gun before coming out for his final scene. Once it got to the big scene where he is supposed to shoot Tony, he screeched “Poison Boots” and kicked the actor playing Tony until he went down. The girl playing Maria then had to jerk the shoe off of Chino’s foot, and had to do the gunshot scene asking “How many kicks Chino? How many kicks, and one kick left for me”.

Every writing advice thing ever: Don’t get bogged down in details on your first draft. Just write! ☺️
Me: How I begin this scene hinges on whether cheese sandwiches were served with mayo in the 50’s.
