Me: Contrary to popular opinion, I'm actually not a big fan of the revised lyric "Chess ain't how your boyfriend thinks." It takes away from a large aspect of the plot, that being Marvin's internalized homophobia. This is a large reason why he refers to Whizzer using gender neutral terms, such as "lover" and "friend". This is demonstrated when during the Chess game, Whizzer begins to say "since you need a man." And Marvin interrupts him mid phrase, as he is so taken aback by the simple statement that he "needs a man" (as opposed to a woman). Whizzer referring to himself as Marvin's "boyfriend", and Marvin remaining completely unfazed by it goes against the careful and meticulous constructions the development of Marvin's character has gone through in large part.
Teacher: Okay... would anyone else like to share one thing they did over the summer?
