That's why the payoff at the end of the season makes sense, because Ed needs to stop. Ed cannot survive as a pirate any longer. It will kill him, and we love Ed. We want Ed to be OK.

The first time Stede's plushie has to get washed while he's baby (or like, he regresses while it's waiting to get washed or something) he literally cries so hard that he gets sick. Ed is super extra careful after that to make sure that the plushie doesn't get too dirty because he simply cannot stand to see Stede so upset 🥺

The auxiliary wardrobe always seems so magical, no matter how much time Ed spends hiding in it <3

Stede, who sucks his thumb for baby reasons, sees Ed, who sucks his thumb as a mindless stim, and thinks "Oh! We are the same!"

So whenever it looks like Ed is getting small, Stede starts treating him the way he wants to be treated in that state- speaking to him more gently and and offering to do difficult tasks for him and stuff like that. Ed seems a little bit surprised by all of it, but he also seems to really appreciate it, so Stede is super proud of himself for knowing exactly how to take care of Ed.

After a while, though, he starts to get frustrated, because Ed doesn't really do any of that stuff while Stede is small. In fact, he barely seems to notice when Stede is small, even though they have all the same tells, so it should be super obvious!!

So Stede goes back to spending his small time all alone. He still takes care of Ed, obviously, but it's clear to him that Ed doesn't have any interest in caretaking in return, so Stede doesn't want to push him and risk losing him completely.

Ed realizes that Stede has gotten more withdrawn lately, so he asks one night if he's done something wrong, which leads to a whole discussion where Stede realizes that Ed actually wasn't small and had no idea what regression is and thought that Stede just got into super affectionate or cuddly moods sometimes.

But now that they're on the same page, Ed is, in fact, very interested in taking care of Stede while he's small, in whatever way he can <3
