Do you know why aph Hungary is portrayed to be yaoi obsessed? Like, in fanfiction she's creepy obsessed with when two guy characters are getting close and I just don't recall ever seeing official stuff that Himaruya drew that shows that? Did I miss an update with it? Is it just something the fanbase made up? I've been a fan for a really long time and I still don't know what's up with that...

This is probably one of my biggest pet peeves, to be completely honest. I’ve already had my rant about it a year ago.

Since then my perception has changed to accepting it as a self-insert tactic for the author, and in certain cases the trope is used for comedy in crack (and regular) fics, or a plot device. I don’t write stories where she is this way so I can’t say for sure, but ‘The Yaoi Club’ seems to be a popular trope to use for school AUs as well, so if the author can squeeze it in maybe they just go for it?

However, Canon APH Hungary has not shown any strong tendencies to spy, stalk, interview, drug, video, nor force two males together for her own devious purposes.

The most she has done is walk in on a questionable scene, realize it’s a turn-on, and watch for a bit.

Mass-focus to certain characteristics is how many misconceptions of characters tend to happen. In this case it’s Hima’s admission that Hungary is a fujoshi. I can only assume that some fans took this to mean she is similar to fujoshi portrayed in other Anime/Manga, who sometimes do act upon their urges by acting the way some fanfiction writers portray Hungary (taking sneaky pictures and interviewing people about their sex lives - I’ve yet to see one push two guys together or drug them horny just so they can film the action).

I figure it’s also an easy way to make the gay happen, since France tends to be placed in this role as well. Japan too, sometimes.

Canonically, Hungary is rather reserved about admitting her intentions are anything but pure.

And while she did sneak some pictures of Austria, it wasn’t this big fiasco, nor as creepy as it’s written in fanfiction sometimes. Her ‘obsession’ seems no more than a casual kink to me.
