Any nice headcannon's you have for Ravi? I'm writing a list of them so I can make some upbeat shit and need some help, do you have any?
I am choosing to headcanon based on absolutely nothing (as we have nothing to go on):
He is a younger sibling and has a decent-but-it’s-definitely-gotten-better-now-we’re-adults-and-don’t-live-together relationship with his older…idk let’s say brother
He has seen every adventure treasure hunting movie ever. Doesn’t matter how trashy. The Mummy? Can quote it inside out and backwards. The Goonies? Yes of course. Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade? Yes. Fools Gold? Sahara? All the unnecessary Matthew McConaughey in warm places looking for treasure with very beautiful companions movies? Yes. Pirate movies???? Obvi
Also he’s read a lot of the treasure hunting books? Like he’s probably got a weird Clive Cussler encyclopaedia somewhere in his head. They were his brother’s bff’s dad’s originally and when his brother had to bring Ravi along with him to hangout with said BFF, Ravi was just younger enough they didn’t want to hang out with him and so he ended up just like. Totally spending his time in the study with the friend’s dads books. Its why he was so equipped to go after the treasure on his own in 4.12. He’d been training his whole adolescence for this.
Uhhhhhh this got weirdly focused on one thing so hmmm
His begins aka his moment he decided to be a first responder was because when he was in college he was at a frat party his senior year and someone (Chad from the lacrosse team, nightmare of a human honestly) accidentally lit the place on fire and Ravi got it out all by himself before anyone got hurt — besides the mascot costume but really that was not a great loss
And so then after he graduated he was at a loss for what to do and decided hey you know what I’m decent under pressure (when its not 6’2 anthropomorphic golden retrievers with chainsaws coming after me for three straight weeks) and then there was that time with the party, I should be a firefighter!
And he is!
Also he’s queer but I feel like that’s just what we do here in fandom land so that isn’t a unique headcanon

Ravi just existing is a blessing tbh.
Also, have you seen the 5x07 synopsis?
I have seen it! I double check verified that it was on the official Fox logline yesterday even! I have been enjoying everyone else’s speculation about it in regards to the movie title it’s borrowed from and the realisation that it is the heist episode for the season.
Everything we know about this makes it seem extremely angsty! I would like it to be a good episode! And while it seems deeply unlikely considering the subject matter and the overall tone this season, I would like it to be a little bit lighter!! The previous two heist episodes were of various levels of levity and at first blush, one might not consider the Taking of Dispatch 9-1-1 to be a light episode and it is not, but a large part of the tone of it, if you consider it again, actually isn’t that grim. At the very least, there were definitely lighter moments. And we could use some lighter fucking moments okay!!!!!!
I don’t think they’re going to be in 5x07, I’m just very tense.
Overall, I am not an angst person, I am the sort of person who fast-scrolls past everything labelled whumptober (sorry, you’re all gifted writers and I love you, I just don’t go to there), so I would like. Some lightness. Please for the love of god.

Apologies for the death obsession friend. What other angsty ideas you got for Ravi?????
I do not have angsty ideas for him. I would like him to be happy and comfortable.
I may, may, accept him having an unrequited crush on Buck because this amuses me, but if we are to see it on screen I want it to exist in service to other things.
Mostly! I think he’s cute and enjoy seeing him on my screen and would like him while he is present to be happy and provide an outsiders perspective on the nonsense. I do not need or want him to have angst. I need about 10% less angst in the show right now, and I am happy to have Ravi provide this.

Ravi is what the A shift needs. Someone with great self-esteem, who has their life sorted, a stable life and someone who actually doesn't let his past define him (hope we learn more about Ravi). Ravi showing up being the change the 118 needs but didn't know they needed is honestly sweet.
AND HOPEFULLY THE WRITERS DON'T KILL HIM OFF OR HAVE HIM LEAVE
Idk if you watch Ted Lasso, Anon, but Ravi’s line about liking who he is and being glad he doesn’t have to replace Buck/try to be Buck reminded me so much of the scene in season one where Jamie, asked if he would prefer to be a lion or a panda, says, “I’m me. Why would I want to be anything else?” Which I just thought was funny
To be completely fair, we don’t know that he actually has his life together outside of the station. He seems to be pretty sure of himself and pretty functional, sure, but we don’t know what his home life is. He could — somehow — be exactly as weird and wild as our folks and just better at hiding it. He did go off by himself to find some buried treasure, after all, so he’s definitely got some wild hairs to him.
And obviously we have him now because Chimney is away, so I don’t know if we’ll get to keep him as a minor character in the background once Chim gets back. I have no confirmation for this from anything official, but it seems to me like he’s currently filling the role in the story that would’ve gone to Albert if not for John Harlan Kim getting a role on Nancy Drew, so as long as that continues we may continue to have Ravi at the 118 demonstrating what normal work-life boundaries look like to the utter bafflement of our friends. And maybe other boundaries too, as the show progresses. Like what it means to be in a platonic friendship with someone there is otherwise no barrier to you dating.

something that I love about Ravi (apart from everything already) is that he's basically the proof of what other firefighters see when they look at the core group with his 'you guys are so weird' and his wholesome self steem
In a much less serious way, Ravi showing up to the 118 A shift is essentially the embodiment of:
Like! Here he is! Normal! Bringing pizza! Happy to be here! It’s the A shift! It’s their Captain’s shift! He’s gonna learn so much!!
Except. Y’know. The A shift is Like That.
Additionally, to build on a metaphor I used in an earlier post, the A shift are Like That because they’re the frogs who have been in the slowly heating water without noticing it’s now boiling while Ravi is the new frog dropped in from the boiling point going “hey actually this shit is messed up!!!”
So yeah! Ravi is our newcomer-outsider perspective, confirming for us that in fact, yes. Our people are not what one might consider “normal” or “par for the course.” Because they are so deeply and inextricably tangled in each other’s personal lives they simply cannot be normal. Work life balance whomst? The 118 A shift does not know her and has never even heard of her.

The way 5A is shaping up, I’m gonna need 5x11 (aka the first episode of 5B) to be just like. Absolutely goofy. Like Ocean’s 9-1-1 x Jinx x Treasure Hunt turned up to eleven. I need it to be happy and shenanigans and I need the stakes to be like. Whoever loses whatever competition it is owes the winners dinner or something. Not a single ounce of seriousness. Not. One. Ounce.

I love Buck’s (internal) reaction to Ravi going “I like being me” was clearly ‘Wow, cannot relate” and I really want to see Ravi say things like this to the rest of the firefam. Like one day he tells everyone “I’m going away with some friends for the weekend; my best friend is marrying their partner :)” and the firefam thinks “Wait you can have other friends? Outside of your work family who in many ways are your real family, the family you chose?” Eddie also thinks “Wait your best friend is marrying someone else and you’re okay with that and not in love with them?! That can happen?”

“I’m not sure that I can [say it back]. Not in those actual words. Look, I used to say it a lot. Even after I stopped feeling that way, they were a shield. But it is how I feel about you. I feel a lot of things when I’m with you. Happy, safe.” “I love you, Maddie. And as long as I know you feel the same, I can say it enough for the both of us.”

partially inspired by this fic by @capseycartwright. special thanks to my love @zeethebooknerd ❤
buck/eddie, 1108 words, fluff.
the first time they kiss is when chris and eddie have had a fight, and eddie’s in the kitchen upset and spiralling and doubting himself, and buck reassures him and comforts him and promises that he’s not going anywhere. it’s small, it’s quick, barely noticeable among buck’s words and the way he has their foreheads pressed together, but it warms eddie to his core.
they don’t talk about it.
maybe it’s for the best — maybe they’re not ready, but it’s okay because christopher comes out and he and eddie apologise to each other and eddie still has his family. he still has his son in his arms, and he still has buck, with fond glances and soft touches and seamless partnership and his friendship.
(if his gaze lingers sometimes, if every time he touches buck he wants to grab on and never let go, well. he’ll tell buck one day.
he’s just not ready yet.)

I have a salad theory question for you.
When Ana made a fruit salad in Eddie’s home, it was canned fruit right? Which has an obvious significance and double entendre to it.
The fruit salad in Buck’s house, on the other hand, seemed to be fresh fruit? But it was delivered there rather than being made there. Thoughts?
oh boy do i ever have thoughts! (i have so many thoughts about salad. it’s getting a little concerning.)
so i talked about it a little bit here, but basically i think the significance of the fruit salad (apart from the blatant parallel to ana, obviously) isn’t so much about the fresh fruit vs canned fruit as much as it is about the plastic packaging and the fact that even if it is fresh, it’s still made by somebody else, ostensibly in something of a mass-production scenario. even if it’s like a fancy grocery store (like… idk, waitrose, i don’t know what the US equivalent is) or a deli or whatever it’s still a standard item, one with a set ratio and production order. anyone who buys that fruit salad is going to have a pretty similar experience.
and there’s nothing wrong with that, you know? you can have a perfectly good fruit salad experience even if someone next door is eating the exact same fruit salad. it’s still fruit salad, and like, taylor seems to have decent taste, it’s probably a pretty decent fruit salad.
but it no matter how good it is, chances are it’s still not as good as a fruit salad that was made specifically for you, by somebody who knows exactly what kinds of fruits you like. somebody who knows, idk, that you love bananas but you’re a little bit allergic to them so they can’t put in more than one. someone who cuts it up for you because maybe they’re not great at cooking but this is something they can do.
there’s nothing wrong with store-bought, with cookie-cutter, with mass-produced, but it’s not quite the same as custom-made, you know?
then the other part is the fact that it arrives wrapped in plastic, which i talked more about in the main 5x05 salad post but the long story short of it all is that plastic can be a metaphor for a whole number of things and none of them (artificiality, suffocation, being on display) are particularly positive.
also tbh since having the fruit salad present is paralleling the eddieana breakup, you could also think of it as an indicator of where things are going. canned fruit started out in the same place as fresh fruit, it’s just a little farther along on the journey. so it could be signalling that bucktaylor is eventually going to end up where eddieana did (read: dust), they’re just not quite there yet.
