HiPOD 23 Sept 2021: The Zhurong Rover Explores Utopia Planitia
The Chinese Zhurong rover, named after the god of fire in Chinese mythology, landed in Utopia Planitia in May 2021. Utopia Planitia is a volcanic region located in the low-lying Northern Hemisphere of Mars.
The expansive, flat, smooth plains of Utopia are dimpled by impact craters, volcanic domes, light-toned ridges made of wind-blown materials, and troughs. If the rover continues to drive south from its landing site, this HiRISE view shows the kind of terrain and features Zhurong may explore.
Black and white is less than 5 km across.

Study discovers startling amounts of microplastics in the feces of babies
Tumblr media
Microplastics are everywhere. Even what should be untouched wildernesses – the icy plains of Antarctica, the crushing depths of the deepest ocean chasms – has been polluted by our garbage.
So it’s no surprise that we ingest plastic, too; it’s been found in our feces, probably as a result of eating from plastic containers. But a new pilot study has found something borderline shocking: Babies have greater concentrations of microplastics in their guts than adults living in the same area.
Specifically, on average, more microplastics were found in the feces of six one-year-old babies in New York City than in the feces of 10 adults. The meconium (earliest stool) of three New York newborns, meanwhile, had concentrations closer to those of adults.
The finding suggests that infants have a higher exposure to microplastics than adults do, possibly due to factors such as child-safe plastic feeding utensils, pacifiers, sippy cups and plastic toys that babies like to chew on while teething.
The results demonstrate that this phenomenon requires further investigation, especially since any health impacts on babies could be a lot more severe.
“Our data provide baseline evidence for microplastic exposure doses in infants and adults and support the need for further studies with a larger sample size to corroborate and extend our findings,” the researchers wrote in their paper.
The health impacts of ingesting microplastics are currently unknown, but it may not be as harmless as we once thought. Recent studies suggest that microplastics below a certain size threshold can cross cell membranes and enter the circulatory system, and can negatively impact cell function.
A team of researchers led by pediatrician Kurunthachalam Kannan of New York University wanted to assess human exposure to two common types of microplastic – polyethylene terephthalate (PET), used to make food packaging and clothing, and polycarbonate (PC), used in toys and bottles.
The researchers collected samples of feces from 6 one-year-old infants and 10 adults, as well as meconium from 3 newborn babies. They subjected these samples to mass spectrometry, after scanning samples of plastic to get an accurate signature to look for in the fecal samples. Every fecal sample contained at least one type of plastic, but the difference between adults and one-year-olds was striking.
“We found significant differences in the patterns of two types of microplastics between infant and adult feces,” the researchers wrote in their paper.
“PET concentrations were significantly higher in infant feces than in adult feces, whereas concentrations of PC microplastics were not significantly different between the two age groups. The microplastics measured in infant and adult feces were thought to be primarily derived from dietary sources.”
Tumblr media
(Zhang et. al., Environ. Sci. Technol. Lett., 2021)
On average, the infant feces contained over 10 times more PET than adult feces. Although the sample size was too small to conclusively rule what the reasons might be for this huge discrepancy, there are a range of possibilities.
Plastic feeding utensils, cups and bowls are considered safer for babies, since they are more difficult to break and therefore less likely to produce sharp shards, as glass and ceramic can do. There are also plastic teething products designed for babies to chew, and plastic toys not necessarily designed for chewing, but that end up munched anyway, because that’s what babies do.
“One-year-old infants are known to frequently mouth plastic products and clothing. In addition, studies have shown that infant formula prepared in PP bottles can release millions of microplastics, and many processed baby foods are packaged in plastic containers that constitute another source of exposure in one-year-old infants,” the researchers wrote.
“Furthermore, textiles are a source of PET microplastics. Infants often chew and suck cloths, and therefore, exposure of this age group to microplastics present in textiles is a greater concern.”
These findings demonstrate, the researchers said, a need to conduct deeper investigation into this phenomenon.
The research has been published in Environmental Science & Technology Letters.

But anyway, there is in the world again a NAZI trend going on...
Prehistoric humans rarely mated with their cousins
Tumblr media
Today, more than 10 percent of all global marriages occur among first or second cousins. While cousin-marriages are common practice in some societies, unions between close relatives are discouraged in others. In a new study, researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, and the University of Chicago investigated how common close parental relatedness was in our ancestors.
The researchers re-analyzed previously published DNA data from ancient humans that lived during the last 45,000 years to find out how closely related their parents were. The results were surprising: Ancient humans rarely chose their cousins as mates. In a global dataset of 1,785 individuals only 54, that is, about three percent, show the typical signs of their parents being cousins. Those 54 did not cluster in space or time, showing that cousin matings were sporadic events in the studied ancient populations. Read more.

YOU can help by sending anti-baby-pills, condomes etc., BUT NOT MONEY to the native people of Okavango delta, to avoid the massive Child reproduction rate there which are the reason of killed Tigers, Rhinoceros, Elephants etc.
Tl;dr: A Canadian company is planning on a project in Africa that will take up 1/6 of the world's remaining carbon budget. This is an issue of neocolonialism and environmental racism.

2: Reconnaissance Africa (ReconAfrica) is a Canadian-registered oil and gas company which has begun drilling for oil in the Kavango Basin, located and Northeast Namibia and Northwest Botswana.
Their license areas cover a total of 34,325 square kilometers (8.5 million acres).
Including parts of the Cubango-Okavango River Basin (traverses through Angola, Botswana, and Namibia) and along the Okavango River, which feeds into the Okavango Delta.
3: The Okavango Delta is a large inland delta located in Botswana and is a world-renowned hotspot of biodiversity.
It is designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and a Wetland of International Importance by the The Ramsar Convention.
It is home to many endangered species, including the African wild dog and the last remaining population of African savanna elephants.
4: ReconAfrica's license areas are home to around 200,000 people.
The company has failed to properly inform and consult with the local people and receive the free, prior and informed consent of the Indigneous San communities.
Several local inhabitants have stated that they were not consulted or even informed that drilling would be taking place.
The few consultations that have occurred happened too late in the process, and were inaccessible to many members of the community.
5: Based on ReconAfrica’s own projections of 120 billion barrels of oil equivalent, a carbon gigabomb of up to 51.6 Gigatonnes of CO2 will be emitted.
The equivalent of one sixth of the world's remaining carbon budget.
6: Activists across the world are calling out and pressurizing Recon Africa along with the Canadian government to stop this catastrophic project.
This is a classic example of neocolonialism, corporate ecocide, environmental racism, and the abuse of power for profit yet again from countries in the Global North. This must be stopped!

WTF again animals...
...who are doing the dirty job of destroying scrap created by us humans??? Is that correct?
Better idea: No, let us not produce anymore so much and such scrap!
Scientists at England’s Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) have launched a series of trials that involve testing mussels’ constant filter feeding as a potential wide-scale application for cleaning microplastics in our oceans. Mussels are fascinating creatures. The insatiable filter feeders can do something that humans could only achieve by spending millions…

Hong Kong’s marine ecosystem over the last 100 years
The skyscrapers and urban development that have made Hong Kong the “Pearl” have also generated pollutants that affect the marine species that live in Hong Kong’s coastal waters. On-going climate change and dams along the Pearl River have also altered these coastal ecosystems. However, it is largely unknown in what ways they are altered, because we lack information about baseline conditions back then. “What were marine environments and organisms like in Hong Kong, say, 50 — 100 years ago, when human activity was much more limited? How were they different from what we see today?” Dr Yuanyuan HONG, a postdoctoral fellow from the School of Biological Sciences, the Research Division for Ecology & Biodiversity, and The Swire Institute of Marine Science at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) raised the question.
Fortunately, young fossils can help to provide the answers. Dr Hong and her team used tens of thousands of small fossil shells preserved in sediment on the seafloor to reconstruct Hong Kong’s marine ecosystem over the last ~50 — 100 years. Using sophisticated biodiversity measures recently developed by co-lead author Professor Anne CHAO from National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan, Dr Hong discovered that climate and metal pollution have played major roles in shaping present-day marine communities in Hong Kong. The finding has recently been published in Anthropocene.
“Climate change, specifically weakening of the East Asian Summer Monsoon, has resulted in less rain and less discharge of freshwater from the Pearl River, and this has substantially impacted marine life in Hong Kong’s eastern waters, such as in Mirs Bay and Sai Kung. In addition, metal pollution from wastewater and the antifouling paints used on ships have greatly altered marine communities in the central part of Hong Kong, such as Victoria Harbour,” said the lead author Dr Hong.
Significant impact on rare species
“Hong Kong’s eastern waters are much less polluted than the central and western waters. However, these ecosystems are also much more sensitive to climate change. Future anthropogenic warming may reduce global ocean circulation and this may enhance the East Asian Summer Monsoon. So, organisms in Hong Kong’s eastern waters may be confronted by enhanced discharge from the Pearl River and resulting lower salinity, higher turbidity, and muddier environments in the near future. Our research indicates that these environmental changes will especially affect rare species. Most species in tropical and subtropical places like Hong Kong are rare, so the anticipated changes may have a profound impact,” co-lead author Dr Moriaki YASUHARA from the School of Biological Sciences, the Research Division for Ecology & Biodiversity, and The Swire Institute of Marine Science at HKU explained.
Hong Kong is one of the largest coastal cities in the world and has one of the world’s busiest ports. Metal pollution, most likely generated from wastewater and the antifouling paints used on ships, has affected marine life in Victoria Harbour, which is surrounded by Tsim Sha Tsui and Causeway Bay (two of the biggest downtowns) . “Hong Kong’s western waters of the Pearl River estuary is resistant and resilient from climatic and anthropogenic changes rather surprisingly. It is also surprising that eutrophication and deoxygenation did not show any substantial effect on Hong Kong’s marine ecosystem in our study. This may be because the Pearl River estuary and South China Sea in general are naturally rich in organic matter and nutrients from mega rivers and high precipitation, and also deoxygenation in Hong Kong is not too serious compared to other urbanised sea areas such as Chesapeake bay next to Washington DC, Tokyo Bay next to Tokyo, and Baltic Sea surrounded by many European cities.” Dr Hong further elaborated.
“Hong Kong remains ‘The Pearl’ even in the sea, as these regions continue to harbour tremendously diverse marine life, but our research has shown that climate and human activities have changed our local marine ecosystem substantially in just 50 -100 years. Underwater change is more difficult to see, compared with deforestation or other modifications of the land,” Dr Hong concluded.
Yet, small fossils can reveal the history of underwater change over past decades, centuries, or longer. “Empty shells on the seafloor allow us to ‘time travel’ to past marine ecosystems and determine the ways in which natural and anthropogenic environmental change have shaped marine communities.” co-lead author Dr Paul HARNIK from Colgate University pointed out.

A APPLE iPhone dissolving in Water would be better for reducing junk on world
Tumblr media
This smart-watch dissolves in water.
The idea is to make it easier to recycle the essential components as well as reduce electronic waste.
And this is a real smart watch: “The smartwatch had sensors that accurately measured a person’s heart rate, blood oxygen levels and step count, and sent the information to a cellphone app via a Bluetooth connection”
Pretty mind-blowing prototype.
