I’ve been LONGING FOR a “doing my job” call back/return, but now I think I don’t need one. Because “I know” is the evolution of “doing my job.”

“Doing my job” came from a place of going above and beyond for each other on the job. It was the first step toward meaning more to each other than just rookie and TO. But it was early days, and Tim especially still had his barriers up, and so their care for each other (specifically, his care for her; she already started operating outside of their job roles as early as S1E7, or even earlier, helping him with Isabel) was limited to work hours and work duty. And so when they have cause to thank each other for going above and beyond what one would reasonably expect from a partner, it was still under the auspices of work. “Thank you.” “For what? Doing my job?” It’s evading the fact that there’s something more there, winking at it, but still giving plausible deniability.

“I know” is those barriers coming down. It is, objectively, an admission that there is more going on here than simple coworkers. It is, objectively, an acknowledgement that they are more to each other. And just like with “For what? Doing my job?” Tim starts it. He is, canonically, “more of a show you kind of guy,” not someone who tells you, and so his care is shown through action. Lucy can’t say “thank you” to set up a “for what? Doing my job?” when he tells her he’s going to list her as the arresting officer, because it is actually verging on detrimental to his job to make this change. And so with “I know,” with the softness and warmth in his voice, with those EYES like a throwback to the parking deck eyes, he is acknowledging that this moves beyond work. That this is personal.

And honestly (maybe this is just a baby theory, idk what y’all think), I think that Lucy’s “I know” here acknowledges that as well. Lucy is the one who has ALWAYS stepped past their boundaries as coworkers to take care of him, whenever and however she can. And, as far as I can think of it, she always blows past any thanks or argument from him. Like in S2E1, when she asks about the food she sent him on recovery, and he tells her she shouldn’t have done that/she didn’t have to, she defends herself, even as she acknowledges that she wanted to. She says eating well is important to recovery. She justifies her decision making as a need, as simply the right or natural thing to do (are there other examples of this? What do y’all think?) or she makes a joke out of it. Lucy is the more emotionally intelligent and emotionally literate of the two of them, but I think she’s hiding from this thing between them more than him.

But with her closing the “I know” loop this episode, she breaks from that pattern. She doesn’t try to justify it with psychology or biology about it being important for healing people to have someone monitoring them, or that people who receive visitors heal faster or something like that. She doesn’t try to joke about not trusting him to push himself too hard too soon. He says she doesn’t have to, and she knows. She wants to. And to me, it feels like maybe the first time she’s really letting herself sit in that feeling, not trying to justify it or lighten the tension she feels or explain it away. She doesn’t have to; she wants to; and she knows exactly what that means.

I’M BACK

Did you miss me? I had big personal problems, and I needed to take some time off. The TV series I was following up to that point had not excited me, so I had thrown in the towel on running the blog. I am following episodes of The Rookie again after last year's disappointment. Mind you, the progress has been there, let's just say, however, that the authors took it very easy, and I didn't like how they were throwing out the seed and then hiding their hand. In fact they were making tweets and stuff to keep us glued, but only the last few episodes of the season proved to be intense. I waited to write because I wanted to see where it was going this year, and I must say I am surprised. The imprint they made in these two episodes is sharper, you can see a pattern that was missing before. So I'm very curious to see where this is going (The Rookie I'm giving you another chance, mind you). As for Lucy and Tim what can I say? They are wonderful and I can't wait for them to get together. What do you think of the scene shared in 5x02? That bittersweet taste of two people who know they want more for themselves, but personal events have led them to make decisions they never expected. Let's see next week, which Lucy will be in danger. Have a good life!

I’m back

Here I am among you again. Unfortunately, I've been having health issues so I've had to absent myself from the blog. How is it going? I have yet to watch episode 13 of The Rookie, and give it a review. However, I wanted to ask what I missed, what spoilers came out, and if there is any hope for our beloved Chenfords. I apologize if I haven't kept up with the notifications, I'll try to catch up. I have missed you all. Big kiss!

Look at that beautiful pregnant belly! It must have been a long time from 4x12, where you can't even almost see it, to 4x15. This would mean that Lucy and Tim even if they are separated for one episode (from episode 13 to 14), more time could have passed than expected. So, more time that the two have known each other, and more time since she stopped being his rookie.

Ps: I’ve seen the sneak peek and I didn’t have any particular vibes. I am curious about Jon’s emoji!

Chenford real or not real?

Since I have seen some negativity around the web about how they are doing on Chenford and The Rookie I would like to weigh in. Before I start, I want to say that what I am going to write will not be against any person, or idea that I have found on the internet. They are simply my thoughts, and as such are not meant to offend anyone, nor are they in any way meant to be teachings on how to read an episode or anything else.

I have been giving a lot of thought to the fact that for many people in the audience on the Chenford front we are standing still. I myself have had moments of discouragement, especially in the initial episodes, because I expected the writers to set a major tone, and a clear direction from the get-go, and to take action no later than the mid-season episode. In particular, in my old reviews I complained (and I partially complain now) about the lack of continuity in the story, the fact that we never had the chance to know what the character was thinking at that moment (in fact, we haven't had any statements from Tim and Lucy yet, and especially after episode 4x01) and the fact that they focused too much on Nolan and Bailey. These are still statements I find myself agreeing with. I'm not thrilled with the way they're approaching this slow burn (I would have had them kiss as early as the beginning of season 4, for example) but I do see an idea of where they want to go in the long term. Which makes me appreciate the scenes Lucy and Tim share. Specifically, I always thought that the mid-season finale episode, and the tenth, would give us enough information about what they wanted to do with Tim and Lucy as a couple and in my opinion the line drawn is clear, and this twelfth episode confirms that. And although I still think a lot of the accent they put on them in exchange for likes and views I have to make an assessment in terms of percentages as well (and I recommend it to you as well). For those of you who are worried that Ashley and Tim might be together, and that he is seriously hitting on her have you thought about how many people really want Ashley and Tim together? That's right! VERY FEW!!! For me, we don't even get to 5% (and I'm being generous!). How many people really want Chenford? If we consider even 50%, it's still a lot. A series also works on this basis. The product is successful if people watch it, and to get people to watch it, it has to please its audience, otherwise it risks closing. All of Jon's emoji, click baiting tweets from The Rookie's official profile were used, and are still being used today to test the market. And while I don't agree with this way of treating fans, maybe pushing on scenes that last 10 seconds are ways that authors need to hear and listen to the audience. So they may take years, but they know the audience wants Bradford and Chen married. So Lucy and Tim may not have shared romantic moments yet, but that's not necessary for us to understand that they're banking on them. I don't want to make another treatise, but observe Tim's attitude throughout the date. If they really wanted to target Ashley as the love of Tim's life do you think they would have invited Lucy, and kept Tim talking to her about how she saved a goat? If the purpose was only to show a friendship between Tim and Lucy this date would have served what purpose? We already know they are friends, so there was no need. So I understand the frustration in not having our couple together, and distrust of when that will happen, but it will happen! Have faith. I believe that a sudden emergency situation like a life and death struggle could turn the tables even in one episode.

Guys it just occurred to me that they mentioned the Dodgers in the last episode as well as in 4x03. Chris likes them too and Webb had tickets available if I remember correctly and offered them to Tim in 4x03. What if Tim wanted to invite someone (Lucy) and Chris did?

CHENFORD 4X12 - THE LONGEST ANALYSIS IN HISTORY

Get ready because this one I'm about to write, will be the longest treatise in history. Finally, an episode in which the times are well distributed, where all the performers have their space, as it should be! I'll digress a little: I loved Nyla (even if I didn't understand how they decided to handle the pregnancy story - I want to know more right away), Lopez & Wes (I love the way Angela apostrophized that two-bit lawyer and the discussion about the management of their son - it reminded me of when they were arguing with the stopwatch), and then as an Italian to hear them recite even a few words in a fluent Italian, from Rome, really made me happy. But let's get to the point: LUCY AND TIM WENT TO THE APPOINTMENT. I will say first that they looked like two fiancés having dinner with a couple of friends (I see a very possible match between Chris and Ashley). Tim's body language said it all (how is it possible that Ashley resigned herself to Bradford's simple apology?). Tim was facing Lucy with his back to her most of the time, he talked to her and they had their own story to tell. One that made them laugh as they looked into each other's eyes, and one that the others could only participate in from afar. Lucy and Tim have an intimacy that goes beyond just friendship. And I'm amazed, again, at how Ashley fell for Tim's two sweet words in the last few scenes. Since there's so much meat on the fire, and you know I'm long-winded, I'm going to try to analyze everything by step, even the feelings going through Tim right now, since I've read a lot of complaints that the dinner could feel like any date between friends, and that this slow burn may never be ignited.

- THE SCENE AT THE BEACH:

this scene is good because we learn about other facets of Tim, and we get yet another confirmation of how Lucy knows him. I'd love to see the two of them have a day at the beach (maybe they'll delight us!), but I'd put the focus on the "hottest" line. Why would Tim need to reiterate this notion that he's a nice guy, etc., to Lucy? It occurred to me that this is not the first time (it also happened in 4x03 - a very handsome guy) and also in 4x11 when Tim asks Lucy why she is so interested in his love life. It's as if subconsciously Tim is asking Lucy for confirmation in a funny, teasing way. I've been looking for an explanation as to why he's acting this way and how they've handled Tim's feelings this season. While I agree with most of the audience that the writers have left too much ambiguity in some scenes, leaving us with the sole task of interpretation (and wasting precious time as well), it's plausible to believe that Tim is testing the waters, but every time he does it's as if Lucy dampens it by leading Tim to act one way rather than another. Let me explain. I believe that after the prank in 3x09, Tim started to question himself, because although that statement was to get Tim's consent to go UC for Lucy, it had a solid truthful basis. Like the fact that Tim worried that something might happen to her, and the fact therefore that he cared about her more than just a work partner. And it started to work its way into Tim's mind, there were moments for him to confirm (like in 3x14 - both the moment with Nova, and the moment at the wedding), and then 4x01. That's the point we need to get back to. This to me is the moment of complete fulfillment for Tim, but he knows Lucy would reject him (she already did in 3x09), so he doesn't say anything to her, doesn't address the situation. Moving on to episode 3, here Bradford recognizes that calling Lucy back as his partner might give rise to rumors (so this gains more and more confirmation in his head), but again Lucy blocks him. So she rejected him in 3x09, she rejected him here in 4x03 (bringing it down to business). And so Tim's reaction begins. It begins to dawn on his consciousness that perhaps he has misrepresented everything, and, he displaces these feelings as a continuation of the deep friendship between them, and continues undaunted to tell himself that they are just friends. To confirm this he needs someone to push away the feelings he has for Lucy, and so Ashley comes along. It's as if Tim is shying away from his feelings (even though he is aware of them he tries to move on, lying to himself that the two are just friends), and Lucy has to become aware of them again. A situation where Tim was in danger might lead her to reflect.

- ASHLEY AT THE STATION

First, I'd like to point out how Tim immediately asks why Lucy went from wanting to strangle someone the week before, and talking to them like nothing happened afterwards. It doesn't sound in any way like a jealous tantrum. YET. I wonder how he'll take the news that Lucy went out with Chris, on a real date this time. Next, Tim agrees to go on the date with Ashley to keep the point with Lucy, and his being a control freak. Tim hates doing this sort of thing. And I was reminded of the bet in 4x07. Remember how Lucy was supposed to get Tim to do something out of his comfort zone? Well, if the date had been just between the two of them she would have succeeded just fine, unlike Ashley, who is accommodated, as if he was doing her a favor and IGNORED for the entire evening. 

- ASHLEY'S CALL AND SANDFORD'S INVITATION

I'm sure Tim's unscheduled invitation will come back to bite him in future episodes. Still we have confirmation of how Tim purposely did to playfully "annoy" Lucy, and how he immediately thought of her as the person to invite. He knows what she likes (including that restaurant), and he wants to please her.

- DINNER

Where do I start? From her taking her mushroom pancake from his plate? From him letting her? (Again, Tim would never allow anyone to do that). Gerard's story, her knowing what he wanted to tell even before he started; the laughs, and the looks they gave each other. The fact that she also knows what Tim wants as a funeral ceremony. These are married without really being married! And through it all Ashley and Chris felt uncomfortable, because that chemistry would make anyone uncomfortable. Tim then sabotages everything with that comment about the restaurant and how fancy it is. Tim is all about the simple things.

- THE FINAL SCENES

To be with someone you don't have to change who you are. Tim acted like this because he felt guilty towards Ashley, for the affection he feels for her, but not because he is in love with her. A woman, should never settle for being anyone's second choice. Tim agreed to do something he never did because he was sorry about how dinner went. But even contacting the office to declare himself ill, he would never have done so even under torture. Tim does not have to change or even specify that he and Lucy are not partners, because they ARE! and it's so obvious, maybe he doesn't even realize it, but others should see it. And there is one person who would never change him. Lucy!As for Ashley, and what I was saying earlier. She bought what Tim told her, but she didn't ask herself the correct questions. She sees a duo, who have crazy chemistry, they finish each other's sentences. Chen gave HER dog to Bradford. How can she think she has Tim all for herself and that she might built something with him that will last?For the next few episodes, I think Tim is asking for a break from being his aide . Although from the promo it would seem that the reason is another. And he will break up with Ashley, it’s just a matter of time!For Chris and Lucy, it's a matter of time too, even if they went on a real date. As I said, I point everything on episode 16.I wrote a lot, and I apologize. If you have come this far, thank you, let me know what you think!

Chenford 4x12 sneak peek and theories

I saw the new sneak peek and what can I say.... I totally didn't expect Lucy to be invited because whoever was actually supposed to be there stood Ashley up. I do find it interesting though that Tim immediately thinks of Lucy because she liked the place, and invited Sandford by being the first person who happened to walk by. I don't know what will happen on the date, but I did see that Ashley/Helena (is that her name?) will not be featured in episode 13, so all my theories fall flat. I also saw that episode 15 is going to be Bailey centric, so I'm afraid there may not be any major developments in sight after episode 12, however I'm banking on episode 16 (in this episode I've always theorized that Chen will break up with Chris, and realize her feelings for Tim), and it just so happens that it should air on March 13. Doesn't this date mean anything to you? 0313 is Tim's code. I know, there could be 3000 explanations and the most obvious one being the inclusion of a commercial product, but let me and @londonrih theorize about that! <3 So that's how things should go for me: - something happens on the date that leads Tim to realize once and for all who he's in love with, and to consequently leave Ashley - he'll try to push Lucy away now that she's with Chris, because it would be too painful to talk to her 12 hours in the car knowing how he feels (Lucy might get angry because she doesn't understand Tim's moves, as happened in episode 3) - there will be a moment of realization for Lucy in episode 16, she will leave Chris and spend the following episodes looking for a way to talk to Bradford about her feelings (remember that it is Lucy who has to make the first move because of the prank in 3x09) - there will be a life-or-death situation, which prompts them to declare themselves to each other. The last episode will feature their first kiss.

4x12 and 4x13 plots & photos

I read the plots for the next two episodes and can't wait for them to air. It was also interesting to see that the promo photos didn't include Tim and Lucy, and that Tim was paired with Angela (so are they already splitting up in episode 12? I don't think so, but will there be some Angela banter?). I believe that Webb's reinstatement must be a callback to 4x03 (otherwise what would his role be?) and that the date is what led Lucy and Tim to separate at work (maybe Ashley notices the chemistry Chenford has and asks Tim to keep Chen at arm's length?) or otherwise make Tim think about his feelings (I can imagine him deciding of his own volition to pull her away from him so he doesn't have to spend 12 hours in the car with the woman he loves while she's dating someone else). Surely, the date will mean something to us fans, otherwise for a 4-way date, why not set it up with Angela and Wes? Oh yeah, I forgot...BECAUSE Tim has to prove he's not a control freak to LUCY (and not Ashley- I laugh). Can they be more married than that? Tell me your thoughts, what do you think? I also think that Jon's emoji are to be taken with a grain of salt, they can give an indication, but not necessarily what huge meaning behind it. Base so much on what they will air.
