One thing about writing that might feel contradictory is that learning to write and figure out your personal style is not a linear process. Some days will be better than others. It’s a skill learned and earned. Writing is similar other art forms (and even sports!) in the sense that one day you’ll be hot shit but the next day you’re getting your ass kicked. That’s totally normal—don’t beat yourself up for feeling lost or stuck in a rut. Even plants start drooping once they start producing fruit.
And writing is an ongoing process! Throughout the entirety of your life, you will always be learning! Which means you will always be changing and experimenting! And what a wonderful thing that is :) Be kind to yourself even on the bad days. You’re right where you need to be.

my writing fundamentally changed forever ten years ago when i realized you could use sentence structure to control people’s heart rates. is this still forbidden knowledge or does everyone know it now

What I hate about writing is when I have to write so much before I finally get to the part I actually wanted to write.

I’m alive! ^_^
Took a long-ish break to focus on academia and have been doing lots and lots of writing for said academia…writing school is truly something else I’ll tell you that much…(but it’s fun! I’m having fun)! So many literary events to attend, so little time…
It’s been surreal coming back and seeing all these brief little autobiographies written in the tags of some of my posts that somehow gained a bit of traction…so many writers in so many different stages of life with so many things to say just hiding there in the tags…I see y’all and I’m proud of u :)
Anyway, I’m not quite finished with the semester yet, but hopefully I’ll be posting a bit more often now that the hectic schedule of spring has almost come to an end ^_^
If ur reading this, ur doing great! Keep up the good work! ♡

I think, genuinely, one of the best pieces of writing advice I’ve ever gotten is: if you feel stuck, take a step back from whatever you’re working on, and come back to it 24+ hours later. Take a few days if possible. Being able to go over something once your palate has been cleansed a little does wonders and you can notice things you’d been missing earlier in that clogged headspace. When you’re so deep into it and start to feel stuck, there’s a possibility that you could start to obsess over certain things and lose thread of what you’d meant to be doing. So take a moment! Breathe!!! Come back to it later!

Personally I think an underrated trope is several villains from different arcs joining together to make their own team of baddies like idk it gets me every time…

Comparing the writing I’ve made in the last few weeks to the things I made a year ago is so crazy cause the difference is so palpable. It’s so fascinating watching my style evolve in real time and it feels so rewarding to look back at old works and think: “I could do that better now.” The stark contrast from the writings I make now in comparison to the writings I made last year is such a great reminder of how far I’ve come, how much I’ve learned, how I’ve evolved into a writer I like so much better now (:
If you compare the things you’ve written recently to the things you’ve written a few months or even a few years ago, you’ll probably see a difference. And that’s cool as hell! We’re changing and learning and growing alongside our art! How wonderful! Be proud of yourself!

Maybe someone needs to hear this today, but writing is supposed to be fun. Ultimately, that should be the goal. To have fun. To enjoy yourself; enjoy the process of making something new out of nothing; enjoy tying together your plot lines and scenes and everything that goes into crafting a story. At the end of the day, your number one goal should be to have fun. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with copious self indulgence if that’s what makes you the most happy. And if you’re not having fun writing right now, it’s okay to take a break! If you’re feeling burnout, there’s nothing wrong with taking a step back to breathe. Remember: art should be an enjoyable process. Yes there is work, and yes there are times where it’s strenuous, but it should be fun, too. Write for yourself. Write for YOU. (Or: don’t write right now if you can’t/don’t want to! That doesn’t make you any less of an artist.) The rest will come later. Just have fun! ♡

Secondary Home
Where Chinese immigrants were pushed
To a big town in the South,
They created a vital social
And an economical network for most.
I visit this place deep in my mind
Of lanterns and trinkets,
Of street vendors and small restaurants,
It constantly felt like an uphill climb.
Up and over narrow streets,
Engulfed in between towering buildings,
And seas of people swimming in swarms,
Like cod in the San Francisco Bay.
I stared with a look of wonder and awe,
At the vibrance and explosion
Of colors I’d never seen before.
It was a secondary safe place,
After the war of opiates and catastrophes,
The chaos,
The upturned emerald green architecture,
The foreign language I hadn’t noticed,
My eyes swimming with visuals.
Visuals of this refuge,
To those fighting intolerance,
To those who migrated to settle,
Who created this vibrant town I love,
As a secondary home.

You are not worth your art. When I say that, I don’t mean you and/or your art is worthless. I mean that your value is not dictated upon your art—how often you make it, the quality of it, the length of it, etc. The outputs of your efforts do not define your value as a person. You are not worth less because you decide to take a break from creating your art—or if you’re moving at what feels like a snails pace. You are not any less of an “artist” if you choose your well-being and personal kindness over churning out art you might not even be happy with. Your importance does not equate to the things you make. You are a person—not a canvas, or a drawing, or a sculpture, or pages with words on them, or a design, or a character you’re meant to play. You’re you. And there’s only one original version. So take care of you. Art will be always be there for whenever you’re ready to return to it, or whenever you’re prepared to quicken your pace again. You’re worth more than just your art. You’re a person, first. We shouldn’t forget that.

This has most certainly been written about dozens of times before but something something isn’t it so beautiful how sunflowers always look towards the sun; how even on cloudy days they’re searching for the light; something something maybe the colour yellow equates to happiness because we were always meant to love the touch of sunlight
