So You Really Liked Fast Car
I grew up on Tracy Chapman, so it's been great to see her having a bit of a revival lately. Here are some other songs of hers to check out!
Want more...
Relationship Disasters: For My Lover, Less Than Strangers
Bone-Deep Melancholy: I Used to be a Sailor, For A Dream
Queer Undertones (imo): It's OK, In the Dark
Social Commentary (with a dose of eat the rich): Talkin' Bout a Revolution, So
Narrators Who Clearly Have a Story: Never Yours, Crossroads
No thematic link to Fast Car, I just love them: Telling Stories (the first song of hers I ever heard, which I related to a lot as a kid who ALSO loved making shit up), Hard Wired (this song came out in 2002 and hoo boy, is it prescient)
Also not linked to Fast Car, but I'd be remiss in making a Chapman post without pointing out her confrontation of racism in many of her songs: Across the Lines, America

Masterpost of TLT metas
This is mostly for my own reference, as tagging doesn't seem to guarantee something being findable on Tumblr...but if you like wildly overthinking lesbian necromancers in space, enjoy!
Overthinking the Fifth House:
Actually, Magnus Quinn isn't terrible at sword fighting
Imperial complicity: Abigail the First
Pyschopomp: Abigail Pent and Hecate
Did Teacher conspire with Cytherea to kill the Fifth?
What does the Fifth House actually do?
The Fourth and the Fifth can never just be family
Cytherea's political observations at the anniversary dinner
Abigail Pent's affect: ghosts and autism
Were the Fourth wards of the Fifth?
Abigail probably knew most of the scions as children
Magnus Quinn's very understandable anger
Fifth House necromancy is not neat and tidy
Are Abigail and Magnus an exception to the exploitative nature of cavaliership?
"Abigail Pent literally brought her husband and look where that got her" (the Fifth in TUG)
The Fifth's relationship dynamic
The Fifth's relationship is unconventional in a number of ways
The queer-coding of Abigail and Magnus' relationship
Abigail and Palamedes, and knowing in the River
Was Isaac the ward of the Fifth?
Did Magnus manage to draw his sword before Cytherea killed him? (and why he probably had to watch his wife die)
How did Abigail know she was murdered by a Lyctor?
Fifth House necromancy is straight out of the Odyssey
Overthinking John Gaius:
The one time John was happy was playing Jesus
Is Alecto's body made from John's?
Are there atheists in the Nine Houses?
Why isn't John's daughter a necromancer?
The horrors of love go both ways: why John could have asked Alecto 'what have you done to me?'
Why M- may have really hoped John was on drugs
What is it with guys called Jo(h)n and getting disintegrated? (John and Dr Manhattan)
John's conference call with his CIA handlers
Watching your friend turn into an eldritch horror
Why does G1deon look so weird? (Jod regrew him from an arm)
When is a friendship bracelet not a friendship bracelet?
Why did John have G1deon hunt Harrow? (with bonus update)
The 'indelible' sin of Lyctorhood and John's shoddy plagiarism of Catholicism
Are John Gaius and Abigail Pent so different?
What was Jod's plan at Canaan House?
John and Ianthe tread the Eightfold path
The Mithraeum is more than a joke about cows
When was John Gaius born? (And another)
John Gaius and the tragic Orestes
Overthinking the Nine Houses:
'No retainers, no attendants, no domestics'
Funerary customs and the violence of John's silence
Juno Zeta and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad time
The horror of the River bubble
Every instance of 'is this how it happens' in HTN
Feudalism is still shitty even if you make it queer and sex positive
How do stele work?
Thought crime in the Nine Houses
The Houses have a population the size of Canada
What must it be like to fight the Houses?
You know what can't have been fun? Merv wing's megatruck on Varun day...
Augustine's very Catholic hobby (decorating skeletons)
Necromancers are not thin in a conventionally attractive way
Matching the Houses with the planets of the solar system
Why don't the Nine Houses have (consistent) vaccination or varifocals?
How would the Houses react to the deaths at Canaan House?
How does Wake understand her own name (languages over 10,000 years)
What pre-resurrection texts are known in the Houses?
Camilla and Palamedes very Platonic relationship
Overthinking House religion:
What do the Houses believe about death?
Was M's nun a Franciscan?
Cavaliership and arbitrary socio-religious structures
Ritual scarification
Sacraments and sacramentals
What did Silas think god wanted at Canaan House?
In defense of Silas
There's no such thing as a 'good' necro/cav relationship
Veiling and shaving in Ninth House cult practice
Tongue-in-cheek thoughts on Eighth and Sixth religion
A very long deep-dive on House belief and practice
Overthinking Harrowhark Nonagesimus:
'The meat of your meat...belonged to god' and 'that is how meat loves meat'
The horror of parental touch: Harrow, John Gaius, and Abigail Pent
Why is Harrow so obsessed with Abigail's hands?
Frontline Titties of the Fifth and transgressive necro/cav relationships

Bible studies for weird queer necromancers:
Epiphany: revealing god's child to the wider world
The Holy Innocents and the creche massacre
The Virgin Mary and Commander Wake
John Gaius and John the Baptist

oh my god.....tamsyn muir....love of my life. love how 30 pages of a short story can completely change everything. we thought ianthe cheated fate but i think ianthe really paid a huge price, especially for her. she is now having her soul changed by bab's presence, a man she just has absolutely no respect for. if you have to kill the person you love most in the world, then it would be a blessing to have some parts of them join your soul to create a new person, as you haven't fully lost them. but if you have to kill a person you do not like very much at all in order to avoid killing the person you love most in the world, then you're now being cursed for having cheated your fate. now you know the rules of dueling.
side note: what was hinted at in harrow and nona is confirmed in the unwanted guest, ianthe is playing a long game, and that game involves corona. my guess....make corona immortal too and the two can live forever together.
that post going around about how Ianthe is completely different from the original lyctors because Ianthe killing Babs for her lyctorhood was the equivalent of paying with Monopoly money because she doesn’t care about Babs. I completely agree which is why it also makes me so insane, because it might not have been like that if corona was Ianthe’s cavalier, which would have been extremely similar to Augustine/Alfred. I see Ianthe as one of the more heartless and self absorbed characters in the series, but I couldn’t see her having made the choice to still pursue Lyctorhood if she was faced with the same choice as Augustine had. which also begs the question, would the original Lyctors have gone through with their choices more comfortably if they had to kill their Babs-equivalent cavalier

I feel like something that doesnt get talked about enough is how fast fashion is coming to hobbies as well. Sure, you can sew, knit, and crochet something better than youd buy in store, but good luck finding quality materials
Want a fabric that doesnt fray from being gently caressed? Want yarn thats not 100% plastic and splits if you touch it wrong? Good luck finding that if you dont have a genuinely good crafts store near you.
Go on any thread where people are trying to figure out where to buy fabric. 50% of it is people saying big stores are servicable, online stores work, or the like, and the other 50% are talking about how bad the quality is or how the quality of a website dropped because it was bought out
Were running into a problem where fast fashiob is so integrated into society that even the ability to make your own, comfortable and long lasting, clothes is being threatened by capitalism

See and NOW i'm in the buffy season 2->season 5 rabbit hole, which is infinite. thinking about how she tangibly fails giles by waiting to kill angel: she protects her heart for just a few extra weeks, and so destroys his, and after that their adult/child dynamic is shifted forever. After that she understands herself as the final arbiter of every fate-of-the-world back-to-the-wall decision. Never again will she throw a tantrum like she did in the Season 1 finale, demanding that he construct a different reality, that he make something be Not Her Job. After Jenny dies Buffy knows she is responsible for Giles, not the other way around. The bargain she makes in the season 2 finale is for his life, and the resolve she finally finds in herself that Angel will die by her sword is in no small part for him. Buffy doesn't really mourn Jenny Calendar! But she knows by hesitating she cost Giles something that she'll never be able to get back for him, and she will not hesitate again. And she doesn't hesitate again, and what she does in the Season 5 finale is not hesitation. She doesn't argue with Giles in the runup to the Season 5 finale. She doesn't throw a tantrum. She doesn't throw a book of prophecy at him. She doesn't beg him to find a solution. She doesn't do any of these things because she figured out a long time ago that what happens is not up to him, it is up to her, and so what she does instead is inform him of what is going to happen. The last thing she'll see is me defending her. You try and hurt her and you know I'll stop you. And we could talk for a couple pages worth of text about how buffy gets from the person who stabs angel through the heart in season 2 to the person who says this, and some of us have already done so, but right now I'm just on the fact that it's Giles saying it to her. Saying it's your job to kill her. The fact that Giles never has another serious relationship after Jenny is so key to this analysis by the way. No one recovers from anything. The cost is forever. And if she hadn't found her loophole she'd have let Giles die for this, and that would be forever too. She looks him in the eye and says dawn's life over yours, no question. A couple extra minutes of Dawn's life for yours. After she pulled a punch and it cost him his heart, and then she ripped up her own to follow the next one all the way through, three years later, he tells her this is what it is your job to do, and she looks him in the eye and says, no.
