Lingering Questions

I got some questions! I didn’t want to interrupt the flow of the episode posts so they’re all here now! Sorry! First, the ones I got multiple versions of:

Will you make another blog to rate Wei Wuxian/Jiang Cheng/Jin Guangyao/Wen Ning etc. and how gremlin/angry/snakey/baby etc. they are? If you don’t, can I do that instead?

A lot of people have asked me if I have plans to Do This To Myself Again and make another rating blog. I don’t have any immediate plans! I definitely need a little break after this surprisingly time-intensive undertaking! Maybe watching the show seven times in a row was, in fact, too many times... (psych i’m gonna watch it again soon nobody can stop me)

if you’d like to do one yourself for another character and another trait/emotion/whatever, have at it! Please do message me about your endeavour if this blog inspired you, I’d love to check it out!

I don’t really post much, but if you’re interested you can follow me on my non-fandom blog here. If I ever decide to do another blog like this one, I’ll post about it there first! 

That’s a great question, and I don’t have a clear answer for you. I think that, for all characters, their impact on his ability to feel peace is pretty variable depending on where he was both in terms of the plot and his relationship to them. I think I might go into this in more detail on my other blog later. But for now, here are the people who affected him the most just generally:

Wei Wuxian, as you noted, undoubtedly increases and decreases his peacefulness the most dramatically. He often bumped Lan Wangji up at least a full point, all other things in the scene being equal. However, he also sent him the lowest he could go. It really depended on how many Evil Vibes Wei Wuxian was putting out and whether he’d murdered anyone they knew recently. Post-return I gave everything an unspoken (but I think we can all agree very necessary) Wei Wuxian Is Alive Bonus of +0.5 points. 

Jiang Cheng always had no impact on him until after the time skip at which time his presence was always a negative, and sometimes quite strongly so, depending on how Menacing he was being to Wei Wuxian at the time. Usually at least a full -1, sometimes -2.

Su She was universally a negative hit to Lan Wangji’s peacefulness post-betrayal, because he sucks so bad lol. At least a -1 at all times after the betrayal.

The Lans didn’t get specific bonuses or decrements. Lan Sizhui almost always improved his peacefulness just generally, particularly as a baby. Lan Wangji is the Softest Dad and it’s too pure, honestly. The rest of the Lan family usually had a pretty minor effect, except for whenever Lan Xichen was aggressively shipping him with Wei Wuxian, and whenever Lan Qiren tried to cultivate the gay away.

I answered this in the tags of a post, but I know that the tags may be missed sometimes, so for anybody who missed the tags: the answer is Rakuten Viki! They allegedly have the best English subtitles, though they do take the rather amusing step of literally translating peoples’ titles (see: Brilliance Overgrowth Lord. It would have taken so much less effort to call him Zewu-jun, but here we are. Here we are living in a Brilliance Overgrowth World).

So, How Peaceful *is* Lan Wangji?

It’s a great question. Some might say the Most Fundamental Question Of Our Time. And they only say that because it Is. Does such a Question have an Answer? Can any of us know what is in the mind of another? Can we ever truly know how Peaceful someone is? Yes, we can. I made a scale for it and it is Foolproof. 

Lan Wangji takes us on quite the peacefulness roller coaster over the course of this show. He’s had some highs (while hanging out at the top of a waterfall) and some lows (dashed on the rocks below the cliffs at Nightless City) and through it all he has made like Three Whole Facial Expressions. He’s Perfect in Every Way. Now that we have been on this journey with him, now that we have become intensely, almost obsessively, familiar with his Brow Furrows and Lip Twitches and the way his Eyes somehow go all Soft and Warm, don’t we deserve to know the Official and Canonical Highest and Lowest points? We Do. Let’s begin.

Least Peaceful Episode: It is Episode 32, with a peacefulness average of 1.5/10. I think we all expected it to be Episode 33, and it would have been, if we could count only the flashback portion, which netted a staggering 0/10 average. However, the International Peacefulness Blog Rating Committee forbids such Technicalities, and Lan Wangji’s Soft Little Face when Wei Wuxian woke up tragically lost its episode the title. 

Least Peaceful Moment: Obviously. Obviously. It was awarded a -3 but we all know that this is a Lack of Peace that Cannot Be Quantified. I gave it a -3 because I couldn’t figure out how to work Absolute Despair/10 into the average. 

Most Peaceful Episode: Another twist, it’s Episode 35, with an Absolutely Incredible 6.9/10. This is because Wei Wuxian is Alive and he spends Relatively Little Time being Actively Menaced by Dogs or Nephews or Brothers or Swords. Plus a Very Homoerotic Duet. All these elements do Great Things for Lan Wangji’s peacefulness.

Most Peaceful Moment: Could there ever be any Doubt? Of course it is when Wei Wuxian Returns to Him For Forever. Lan Wangji doesn’t even appear in this scene! But the Overwhelming Peacefulness is Too Strong To Be Denied.

Series Peacefulness Average: We have come to the Crux of our Investigation. The Question that scholars have puzzled over Since Time Immemorial. How Peaceful Was Lan Wangji, On Average, Over the Course Of The Show? Through a complicated series of Calculations and Arcane Computations, I can now confirm the answer that we have all sought, the Ultimate Peacefulness Average: 4.2/10.

Episode 50

Lan Wangji would like to politely ask what, precisely, the actual fuck is going on at this Moment? Nie Huaisang is... A Mastermind? That doesn’t seem right. And yet...? He goes ahead and Settles on an All-Purpose Glare, that seems like a Safe Bet. 3/10

Things have Escalated Very Quickly and Honestly Lan Wangji is Not About this Haunted Temple Life. Really just so much more Melodramatic and Murdery than Necessary. 1/10

Jiang Wanyin is working Incredibly Hard to use up the Very Small Amount of Goodwill he managed to accrue by At The Very Least not being on the side of the Homicidal Maniac who is currently holding them all Hostage. 3/10

Well this is just Embarrassing for everybody here. So Many Emotions. Are all of these people really like this All The Time? Exhausting. Lan Wangji barely even bothers to Be Menacing at Jiang Wanyin. Mostly he’s just Judging Quietly. 5/10

How Many Times will Lan Wangji be forced to Bear Witness to this man’s Grave being Disturbed?? At least he’s got his head back this time. 3.5/10

Has a man ever looked more Bored by being held at sword point? Doesn’t even look at the person threatening him. Absolutely Brutal. 6.5/10

Just when you thought Lan Wangji could not possibly Glare More Intensely, he does it. Did we need More Reasons to Dislike Su She? No. But we have Gotten Them Anyways and we must Make Use of What We Are Given. 2/10

Lan Xichen is not a Betrayer. This is Good. Lan Wangji can turn his Fierce Glare back on Jin Guangyao, who is now a Double Kidnapper and therefore Doubly Deserves It. 2/10

Extremely Rude of Jin Guangyao to just not allow himself to be Stabbed like this. Just a Shocking level of Discourtesy. 1/10

Lan Wangji jumps right from Standing Idly By to Murderous. Su She better not have just tried to Threaten Wei Wuxian. 4/10

Lan Wangji is Vindicated. Wei Wuxian is an Innocent Angel and Su She is the Worst. Finally he can Stab Su She and Nobody can tell him to Stop. 7.5/10

Do these people know how lucky they are to have Wei Wuxian sacrificing himself like this for them? Well, not that lucky, he’d do this for pretty much Anybody. He would sacrifice himself for an Actual Goat that he Just Met. The Boy has a Problem. Lan Wangji throws everybody a Reproving Glare anyways. They Don’t Deserve Him. 4/10

Those kids better not be fighting over their Unresolved Personal Traumas out there. 6/10

Hey! Are you kids fighting about your Unresolved Personal Traumas over there? Have you considered simply Repressing all of that Sadness and Pain instead? 4.5/10

Lan Wangji doesn’t know where to look while Jin Ling has an Ugly Cry in front of Most of the Cultivation World. He is Quietly Grateful that he expresses his Most Serious Emotions in Tiny Facial Tics that only his brother, Wei Wuxian, and obsessive internet weirdos with oddly specific blogs would notice. 4/10

The face of a man realizing that the fact that he Adopted Wei Wuxian’s Kid, named him “Wow I Sure Do Long For Wei Wuxian,” and then Hid All Of That, is coming Dangerously Close to Being Noticed. 3.5/10

Lan Wangji considers all the ways in which Jiang Wanyin is an Ongoing Disappointment to him. 3/10

Tonight has taken a very weird, very patricidal and surprisingly incestuous turn. Lan Wangji was really Not Ready for Any Of This. 2.5/10

This is a Frankly Ridiculous Amount of Fondness, this Smile is simply Too Gentle to be Allowed. Honestly, leave some Unconditional Love for the rest of us, Lan Wangji. 9/10

He doesn’t Hesitate. He doesn’t even have to be Asked. This man has waited sixteen years to be the sugar daddy that Wei Wuxian deserves and damn if he isn’t stepping up. 9.5/10

Uh yeah I think it’s safe to say he remembers the Last Good Time you two had together before you Went Insane, Killed A Bunch of People, and Threw Yourself Off a Cliff, Wei Wuxian. -1 for the Child-Sized Secret that Lan Wangji is Keeping For... Some Reason. 4/10

Look at Lan Wangji doing Absolutely Nothing to stop Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning from Pranking the Children. Truly he is Complicit in the Yiling Patriarch’s Most Terrible Crimes. 6.5/10

The Proudest Dad. Of course Lan Wangji would never play Favourites with the juniors, it’s just that Sizhui is simply the Best Boy. He can’t help the Facts. 8.5/10

The Most Disappointed Uncle. It’s not that he Hates Jin Ling, it’s just that he is a Terrible Child and Very Lucky that Wei Wuxian would Probably Not Approve of a little Retributive Stabbing. 4/10

Oh sorry what was that Uncle i can’t hear you over all this Evil I’ve been Befriending. 4.5/10

Well this isn’t going quite as well as one might have hoped. 2.5/10

Lan Wangji literally could not care less about anything that comes out of Su She’s mouth. Every moment that he spends un-Silenced is a new test of Lan Wangji’s Ever-Waning Patience. 3.5/10

Could there possibly be anything more devastating than having the Yiling Patriarch and Hanguang-jun team up to Completely Roast you with nothing but the Cold Hard Facts? Su She never stood a chance and Lan Wangji is Secretly Loving It. 7/10

Oh yes, we can all take the time to Carefully Consider now, but where was this Careful Consideration when it was Lan Wangji’s Evil Boyfriend who was engaging in Horrible Demon Magic and Potentially Murdering a Bunch of People, hmm??? 3/10
