Ginny Weasley turns eighteen and pretty much immediately corners Sirius in her parents’ backyard.

Which—Christ.

Her parents’ backyard.

Because they’re at her parents’ house, eating homemade chocolate cake with a scathingly sweet strawberry filling and pretending that Sirius has been invited for literally any reason other than pity. Obligation. Begrudging concern for his general wellbeing. The patio is littered with shiny foil grocery store balloons decorated with fireworks and soccer balls and cartoon characters he doesn’t recognize, and the heavy night air still smells like the ancient charcoal grill Arthur had unearthed from the garage and proceeded to burn twenty-four straight burger patties on.  

“I’m eighteen now,” Ginny says bluntly, cocking her head and lifting her chin. It’s like she’s challenging Sirius to a fight. A bar fight. A fist fight. The sundress she was very likely bribed into wearing has a maze of crocheted lace straps crisscrossing her upper back and, in his completely uninterested outsider’s opinion, seems a little too low-cut for the occasion. “Just so you know.”
