Devineaux strikes me as the kinda guy to be like ‘haha don’t be ridiculous I am perfectly fine’, then pass out, partially from declaring he’s fine too loudly.
Okay, so, when Chase Devineaux is first introduced, I immediately thought of the Lego cop character in the video game Lego City Undercover, who is also called Chase. Thought lol they’re both cops, and didn’t think much more about it.
But, at some stage, my brain remembered that when in the video game you fall in water where you’re not supposed to go in, you get eaten by a Lego shark (which sounds cute but especially the first time it happens it’s bloody terrifying). And then realising that Devineaux ends up fully submerged in large bodies of water at least twice, this happened:
Headcanons for Zach and Ivy working with Chase and Julia post- final season:
Chase finally gets to teach someone (I think this is almost his first line to Julia in the show - that he will be her teacher). Julia let’s him take the lead, as she can see this is important to him.
He gets way too excited when the Chief says someone needs to show Zach and Ivy the ropes and volunteers. The Chief responds with “knock yourself out, Devineaux” then adds “don’t take that literally”.
The one time Zach accidentally calls Chase ‘dad’ and they’re both mortified.
Either Zach or Ivy start calling Chase ‘eyebrows’. The other starts doing it, it catches on.
Zach and Ivy bringing the whole family vibe to ACME. Them getting the other agents to be nicer and friendlier to each other.
Zach and Ivy asking all the agents when their birthday is so they can bring cake to the office. Agent Zari straight up responding with “if I told you I’d have to kill you.”
The first time Zach and Ivy see Chase rough up an ACME vehicle, and they get really angry about it and tell him off.
Chase realising Zach is a better driver and enthusiastically asking for tips like “how do you take corners so fast and smooth? Please, tell me, I must know your secret!” Zach responding with: “I slow down😑”.
Friendly reminder that Devineaux was actually proper tortured for information by VILE.
Like, sure they went for effective over brutal, but it wasn’t to be nice it was just cause it was actually more effective than brutalising him. Whilst this was certainly kept that way because of the target audience, I love how wrecked Chase looked by the whole procedure. Sure it wasn’t excessively violent, but they definitely conveyed this thing was doing some damage to him.
And whilst he was still being a tool at this stage, you feel bad for him. He did nothing to deserve this, even taking into account his current level of stupid. VILE just misinterpreted him as a threat.
what would you say your all-time favorite Chase scene is if you were to pick?
That is such a hard question. I don’t even know which one to choose. Okay okay, I’ll give you my top 3 for s4 because s4 Chase was a whole different man. Then my fav 5 from s1-3. Is that okay? Sorry, I’m doing this all wrong.
S4
1) This scene whole is the pinnacle of golden-hearted Chase as well as the perfectly pure dynamic between Chase and Julia I always wanted. I also wanted to pick the reporter scene but then I’d end up wanting to select all the scene where Chase is just a softie, I’d be here all day. When I first witnessed this scene it instantly took me back to s1 ep 3 where after snapping at Julia, Chase instantly dropped his scowl for a more regretful expression at his actions. I feel like that was a hint for what was to come, the true Chase who is honestly a spontaneously quirky guy with a good heart (himbo) who wandered astray due to an unchecked ego. He clearly wasn't happy with himself, even if he tried his best to be and appear as if he was. His whole turn from trying to be stoic to openly wear his exuberant and naturally kind personality on his sleeve just hit. So nice to see. It would have been such a waste to leave him behind as the grumpy man like NO. Anyway.
Pretty much s4 was just ripe with good-boy devineaux content. I feel like any interaction with Julia just HIT in this season. Was just, pure. I guess this scene encompasses all that character development neatly with a nice little bow called Chase is a hugger xx.
2) THIS. And everything before and after it. Like PLEASEEE. Save some of those handsome man scraps for the rest of us, good sir, my oh my. TBH this whole ep was perfection. The determination. YES.
3) Yes. That is all.
Honorable mention to the Chase & Julia in her office discussion scene, Chase getting clocked by a frisbee, the entirety of ep 7 with Chase just listening to Julia with his proud smile, Chase learning the truth behind the demise of his favourite jacket and Chase and Carmen interacting period.
S1-3
1) back.
2) The realization. *clapclapclapclap* go boy go.
3) The pure personality just oozing from this single 3-second scene like PLEASE CHASE. I can’t love you any harder than I already am. Tbh any time Chase touches, interacts or is animated with his ACME glasses is a gift.
4) Don’t make me explain why okay just take it. TAKE IT.
5) whyyyyyyyy does the elevator date back two centuries, waS NO ONE EVER IN A HURRY BACK THEN? lives in my mine rent-free. Just the way he screams WASNOONEEVERNAHURRYBACKTHEN! stole my heart. Ep1 and I was already smitten.
Honorable mentions: Chase jumping a fence one-handed, Chase squishing his face screaming ‘NOTAGAIN!’, the whole Chase & Julia grocery dream sequence, sad hospital Chase regretting all his decisions, Chase getting swooped by that seagull and Chase’s lil instant regret face for being a douche and snapping at Julia for no reason.
Shoutout to the corner shop clerk who checked Chase had enough red yarn supplies. Probably never asked what he was doing with it. Just noticed he bought it a lot in a short space of time. Probably caught on he was going through a rough patch and it was part of his coping mechanism so made sure the man got his yarn.
He really isn't stupid. He's just... a comedy or errors. Some, are very much his own. Others are not.
Things Chase Devineaux did that weren’t that incompetent:
Located VILE HQ. By himself, in his apartment, with a ball/s of yarn. Just arrived a few days too late.
Chased Carmen’s speedboat through Venice. On foot. Caught up to her.
Just had his brain absolutely fucked riffled through. Saw Carmen and perceived her as a threat, and somehow had the presence of mind to pull out his pen and activate comms/homing beacon. Then immediately passed out for a week.
I did much fiddling with the facial controls trying to find the right combination of probably-only-got-three-hours-sleep and subsisting-on-misc-addictive-substance-breath-mints.
