I keep seeing this "Bucchigiri has an awful mc" discourse popping up whenever the anime is mentioned, and there's something that bothers about the way a lot of people are framing these discussions. People always point out the fact that Arajin is a dirtbag who ghosts his only friend to simp for a girl who is actively disinterested in him under the pretense that this is behavior the anime expects us to agree with and think is good, and will thus endear him to us as audience, but like... that's obviously not what Bucchigiri is trying to do??
like- this is a show where the protagonists main love interest is a girl that is so revolted by him that she has zero qualms manipulating him into joining an actual gang, a show where the main character almost shits his own pants before every single action scene, and lets not forget, a show where he neglects and mistreats his only friend so badly that said friend loses it and systematically beats the piss out of every other character on the show to work out his frustrations.
Does that sound like a show that "failed at making a likable protagonist", or does that sound like a show that is purposefully centered around a selfish and awful character?
One of the shows main narrative hooks is watching this terrible man stumble his way through what is an otherwise fairly serious shounen anime world. I think that's a pretty funny subversion of typical anime tropes, but even if you don't agree, to deny that it's what the show is going for is to just refuse to engage with it on any level, and that's the main issue with this type of critique.
You can dislike the show for not having a likable protagonist, but the show is not trying to have a likable protagonist. At that point you're not hating a show because it executes what it's trying to do poorly, you're hating a show because it's not something it never wanted to be in the first place.

Imagine if eldritch giants attacked your village, massacred the entire population, your family, your friends, cooked and ate their corpses in front of you and then one of them found you cowering in its oversized belongings and went "Aww cute little creature, I'll keep you."
That's what happened to this critter.

I think a lot of people don't understand that Azula turning against everyone in her life who isn't Ozai is literally a symptom of Ozai's grooming. It is NOT a sign that "everyone failed her," especially when we do see people trying to reach out to her. But people who groom children work to be the only person in that child's life that they feel they can trust, because it's easier for them to then exploit that trust.
And do you know what? The grooming process does not stop with the child victim. It usually involves other adults in the child's life as well, as the abuser both gains the trust of their victim's trusted adults while also working to further that rift and isolate the victim.
Ursa is actually a really good example of this, because she was also being groomed by Ozai to the point where she was forced into a situation where the only way she could help her children would put her out of their lives forever, and by that time Ozai had already created enough of a rift between Ursa and Azula that Ursa's attempts to teach Azula kindness just increased that rift.
To look at this situation and say that Ursa, or Iroh, or Zuko, or anyone other than Ozai is at fault is to buy into Ozai's manipupativeness.
Btw, Ursa saying in the comics to both her children that she "didn't love them enough" and blaming herself for the things Ozai did to all three of them is also a symptom of being groomed by Ozai, not an objective admission of guilt, smh.

Despite what you may have heard Bruce Wayne is not, in fact, a furry.
He is, however, very opinionated.

It only just occurred to me that somewhere in my audience there's someone for whom that little Mists of Pandaria kazoo song I used to play on the MLP videos is probably some deep nostalgia

What a fun and whimsical show! I sure do hope nothing bad happens-

What I find really really compelling about Laios' special interest is this:
As a person who's special interest is dogs, I'll tell you right now that I fucking love them. I live in a city full of strays, and I actively go out of my way to pet, play with, and interact with them. It brings me a lot of joy and comfort to be able to be surrounded by puppies.
I will also be the first to tell you that, like it or not, dogs are animals - and animals, ultimately, can be unpredictable. They can be scared, they can be territorial, and they can be impulsive. And while I genuinely believe that there's no such thing as a bad dog or an angry dog - only a scared one - I also don't believe it makes a functional difference once a dog has bitten you what intentions it may have had.
Dogs are dangerous. I've seen people get bitten, I've been bitten, I've had close calls, some of which were my own fault and others which were not.
And Laios reflects this so beautifully, especially in the Kelpie arc. He's not blinded by his love for these creatures, he's not overtaken by baseless empathy - he understands, understands better than anyone, that these are at the end of the day monsters, and they are dangerous, and when push comes to shove sometimes you've just got to kill them. In fact it's his love for them that lands him this knowledge and understanding in the first place - just as I know that there's no room for fear and weakness when it comes to interacting with dogs, he knows there's no room for hesitation and empathy when it comes to interacting with montsers.
It's so fucking realistic of someone who genuinely researches and cares about these creatures, rather than superficially "liking animals" and then trying to assign human qualities to inherently inhuman creatures.
God.
Laios is fantastic fucking representation.

The important thing is that Marcille did not learn to blaspheme against the natural order to save her girlfriend. She just happened to have studied the art of spitting in God's eye for wholly unrelated reasons, and when the opportunity by chance arose to employ that skill in service of girlfriend-saving, she was ready.
