Jimmi's adventures in Hasetsu ヽ(*´∀｀)ノ

I just graduated from college earlier this month, and what better way to celebrate than going to Hasetsu Karatsu for the current Yuri on Ice Collaboration ^_^ There’s a Hasetsu Passport that can be bought, which is used for the stamp rally :3

Riverside Hotel Karatsu Castle

I was supposed to stay in the dorm here, but to my surprise I got upgraded to a private river facing room \(^o^)/ apparently there's also an extra discount if you bought the Hasetsu Passport as well, but I hadn't collected mine when I checked in so no discount for me then :'D

The river view from my room was gorgeous:

Incidentally, my room was called Shachi(hoko), and a giant version used for Karatsu Kunchi (an annual festival held in Karatsu) was on display at the Hikiyama Exhibition hall:

Karatsu Station

In the anime it’s a squid thingy, but in real life it’s (I think) a red lion (Akashishi):

Karatsu Castle

There’s actually a pretty good museum inside featuring Karatsu yaki (Karatsu style pottery), and the history of Karatsu castle, including a suit of armour that had arrow holes in the helmet (no surprise what happened to the poor person wearing it at the time)... The scenes from the anime are spot on with the actual castle grounds though:

Caravan

Reservations are needed to enter (which, unfortunately, I didn't know about ×_×), and when I tried to walk in I think they wanted to turn me away at first. Then they asked me if I was a Yuri fan, and I was in :D I guess I was lucky that it wasn't fully booked and I went alone as well, cos I highly doubt a larger group will be able to enter ×_× Once I was in Chef Kawaue (hereon referred to as chef cos that's what everyone there calls him lol) showed me this wonderful place:

And when he called me to the counter I had a lovely welcome party greeting me ;___;

The beef was amazingly good, and I wasn't even eating the specialty beef (Saga beef) *_* I also ordered the house cider (I wonder if anyone recognises the label lol) in Yuuri's flavour, and there was a mini pouring ceremony. Someone after me ordered both Viktor and Yuuri's ciders, and they had this huge ceremony *__*

While waiting for the rest to finish dinner the other fans there were teaching me how to best go about my pilgrimage plan my route lol. There were a lot of shikishi by Kubo sensei there too *_*

After dinner chef told us about many, many stories of his experiences with YoI and his various encounters with Kubo sensei, like how YoI gave him a push to move forward (he came back to Karatsu after a couple of years in the city, disheartened and in a slump), and many, many more extra behind the scenes stories he heard from Kubo sensei (e.g. after onsen on ice, as Yurio was leaving Hasetsu, he looked up at the night sky by the sea and said as tears fell down his face "Indeed, I love Hasetsu"; why Karatsu was chosen of all places etc.). It was so much fun drinking Russian tea (as expected of chef) while listening to him tell all his stories, and we stayed till way, way past closing time ;_;

At the end chef gave those of us he came the first time a bottle of Yurio flavoured cider (it has leopard printsssss) to take home ;___;

Mikaerino Waterfall

I hiked an hour and a half from the nearest train station to get here and I thought I was gonna die in the countryside and no one would find my body x_x But the view was absolutely gorgeous *_*

Yuri!!! On Museum

It’s really largely the same as the one previously in Tokyo and now making it’s way round Sendai, except much less crowded :D And there’s a lot of Karatsu exclusive goods too (the file is the prize for finishing the stamp rally):

Yu-topia~ Kagamiyama Bijin no Onsen

I originally intended to climb Kagamiyama itself, but after going past the torii gate at the mountain entrance I realised that it was pretty much unscalable at my current fitness level, especially given that it was about to rain x_x 

I went to the onsen instead for katsudon, and it was vkusno :3 

Beach at Karatsu (I think it's called Nishi no Hama)

I think this is the beach where Yuri and Viktor where talking together in episode 4 (correct me if I’m wrong x_x), and I dropped my phone and cracked it while taking photos here... It’s almost surreal walking down the beach while listening to Kamome on an overcast day ;_;

Nakasu Yatai

It’s about 45 minutes away from Karatsu by train, but in order to get to Karatsu you need to pass through Fukuoka first anyway, which is where the yatai is. The food is a little pricier than what I’d expect from a street stall, but it was really simple and tasty ^_^

Hamasaki Beach

This is where the beach showers are from~ There were always a few people taking turns to take photos there lol, and I went there twice on weekdays in both the morning and evening ^^; 

Chikuhi Line

The train used in the ending is model 305, and the interior is really pretty compared to most other trains I’ve seen in Japan, with wooden based seat interiors:
