Foreshortening is a technique that produces the illusion of a body or figure in perspective. Read on for tips and swipe to see our process! Materials: paper, pencil or pen 1️⃣: Observe the difference between a cat drawn in profile view and a foreshortened view. Notice how we drew the cat’s body as its most basic forms: two circles and an ellipse. ❗When the cat is foreshortened, the circles representing the front and back of its body appear closer together than in the profile view. It’s like the body looks more squished together when it’s foreshortened. ❗When foreshortened, the parts of the cat that are farther away from the viewer look smaller. They’re receding into the distance. So the circle farther away from us is smaller than the circle closer to the viewer. 2️⃣: Draw the form of the cat as the basic shapes of circles and an ellipse. Keep redrawing them until the position looks right to you. 3️⃣: Draw contour lines that are more representative of the way the cat’s body curves. When in doubt, observe Manet’s drawing again! 4️⃣: Add hatching to give a sense of volume and shadow: draw a series of short lines placed close together.
