who is this man? what is he? max has lurked at the edges of many, many worlds but none have ever looked like this. soft, genuine, and willing to say things like that even when what max is capable of demanding could break people in two. “you shouldn’t say things like that when you have no idea what i can demand from you.” he is held up by hunger. hunger for affection, power, revenge, hunger for anything that can make him feel like his birth wasn’t an unhappy occurrence in the world. not for the world. just for him.

having someone say something like that is odd, especially when it’s true, max isn’t truly used to people saying things that ring true to him. he tilts his head to the side, rather like an animal suddenly confused but not afraid or ready to charge. just. observant. cold eyes and a matching smile on his face. it might be the most honest expression he’s ever shown her.

“i thought a bartender would be used to that. isn’t that how you make the best tips?”

cason knows having any kind of conversation with ace will only give him a headache. he knows this. he has experienced this. yet, here he is, opening his mouth. maybe it’s just nice to talk to someone with a pulse. “and then you two would end up on an episode of Snapped, narrated by Keith Morrison.”

that’s harsh, but almost certainly true, so ace doesn’t fault him for saying it. if love were enough maybe he can cathryn could’ve stood a chance. but it wasn’t nearly enough to overcome everything else about their personalities. “nah, i think we’d be on a way more popular show cause we’d probably take a building down with us.”

there are things that they can understand about each other. though they come from enemies they were raised with bloody hands and they can understand that even if they don’t speak about it. but this? this is something she probably will never understand about him. this is not a mask. this is what’s left behind.

once upon a time there had been a little boy. alexander. alex to his brother and the very few friends he had. but that boy had been killed, pushed into water over and over again until one day he never came back. alex died. ace lived. this is all he was now.
