Because I like to think that the first one was from Lancelot to Merlin, which just arrives one day completely out of the blue after months of nobody knowing if he was even still alive or not after Hengist. It’s not a long note and full of mis-spellings, just asking after how everyone is. Merlin drops literally everything to send his reply.

And it all just develops from there. Merlin keeps all of them. Because he has to keep moving around, Lancelot can’t keep a lot of what he receives from Merlin. Just the ones that reached him in the far darker moments.
