one of my all-time favorite things to explore in fantasy and speculative fiction is like, the hypocrisy and wackiness (derogatory) underneath the accepted status quo of a setting, especially as it’s presented to an outsider protagonist. So I think part of why I also really really like the quarians in Mass Effect is that, yeah, now everyone dismisses them as stateless, sickly, drifting outcasts, but up until the war that cost them their homeworld, they were a fully thriving civilization, considered unmatched experts in cybernetics and robotics– and that was only two hundred years ago. To an elderly elcor, that’s still well into their early adulthood. To an asari or a krogan, that’s like a real life human remembering the 90′s. Like, binch!! You were buying the top-of-the-line quarian-made space roombas with everyone else before that whole AI rebellion thing! I bet you still have one!!!!
