not to be controversial bc I know this is like…not in line with shifting opinions on fanfic comment culture but if there’s a glaring typo in my work I will NOT be offended by pointing it out. if ao3 fucks up the formatting…I will also not be offended by having this pointed out…

‘looking forward to the next update’ and ‘I hope you update soon!’ are different vibes than a demand, and should be read in good faith because a reader is finding their way to tell you how much they love it. I will not be mad at this.

‘I don’t usually like this ship but this fic made me feel something’ is also incredibly high praise. I’m not going to get mad at this.

even ‘I love this fic but I’m curious about why you made [x] choice’ is just another way a reader is engaging in and putting thought into your work.

I just feel like a lot of authors take any comment that’s not perfectly articulated glowing praise in the exact manner they’re hoping to receive it in bad faith.

fic engagement has been dropping across the board over the last several years, and yes it’s frustrating but it isn’t as though I can’t see how it happens. comment anxiety can be a real thing. the last thing anyone wants to do is offend an author they love, and that means sometimes people default to silence.

idk where I’m going with this I guess aside from saying unless a comment is outright attacking me I’m never going to get mad at it, and I think a lot of authors should feel the same way. ESPECIALLY TYPOS PLZ GOD POINT OUT MY TYPOS.

Just read the first chapter and decide from there. That usually seals it for me. Also.. yeah, tags and summaries are there for a reason. Hits and kudos shouldn’t matter.

Another AO3 thing I’m curious about, how do yall decide if something is good enough to read? Usually I follow a rule of 1 kudos for every 10 hits. One because it’s easy math and two it’s yet to fail me. Thoughts? Do you just go for it and pray it’s good?

A snippet from the next chapter of afterglow, in which things...accelerate:

There was a knock on the door around seven. The courier would not even stop to say hello, though she had prepared a drink for him, as well as a cheese board. He was young, maybe about twenty-two, and somewhat handsome with big feet, and though she would have held little in common with such a specimen, she had been hoping for idle conversation, even just twenty minutes of his time. She'd held such with some couriers in the past, but this one, she could see that he held little regard for her, or perhaps too much, as he would not even look her in the eye as she signed his delivery log. She wondered if, perhaps, his coldness was due to her recently elevated rank, and this was very disappointing. She brought the file inside and closed the door and left her cheeseboard untouched on the fake marble, laminate countertop and went back to her study to sit with her whiskey.

Jadis had been trying to understand something very serious about Beth's situation. Her files, the more she studied them, rendered incomplete in places. She had read through Edwards's private logs fifteen times, and every time was the same. He was her doctor and her closest friend. He had entries about Daryl, about Maggie, Hershel, the prison, Rick, and Judith Grimes. It seems that Beth had told him the most intimate memories of her life, and because he was working lead on the earliest iteration of Project V, which would inform each subsequent protocol related to radiation treatment for Wildfire infection, all of those memories were deemed medical imperatives and immortalized in medical literature, which anyone with a high enough security clearance could access at their leisure.
