They mostly flare up when he's feeling stressed or threatened, but also strangely in response to various things his crush does, which discourages them from doing those things around Shadow because they assume he doesn't like them. But of course the truth eventually comes out – possibly in a comedic accidental bean spillage – that it's because he's attracted to them.
