ACETONE REACTS WITH COPPER/ZINC

Or rather acetone, due to the photochemical catalyzation by copper (also the traces of copper in commonly sold titanium zinc plates), turns into acetic acid which then reacts with copper/zinc to copper/zinc acetate. The acetate spots don't get etched by the etching acid the way they should. This leaves certain patterns on the plate which you can't overetch, no matter how many times you try. The pattern can completely ruin a plate. Not only have I had this happen with acetone, but also with degreasing spray. Both acetone and degreasing spray are commonly recommended in printmaking literature for degreasing the plate.

Today I did an experiment to rule out any possible contamination of the materials but I still got the good ol pattern showing up. So that only left the possibility of acetone somehow interacting with the plate. Another thing that fits to the explanation is that the reaction is dependent on light, thus the patterns show up seemingly at random.

The fix to this may be to switch to isopropanol, I'll update this post as soon as I've tested it!

Tfw you look up less toxic alternatives to zinc etching with ferric chloride/citric acid, but the proposed copper-sulphate solution is exhausted after like 3 etches, etches way too quickly for fine drawings and produces a bunch of solid state residue. And if you want to at least reduce the use of toxic organic acid resists and solvents, the proposed alternative is to use water-based acrylic stuff which only contributes to the microplastic situation. Nah, I'll keep my hydrogen-fuming ferric chloride and stinky turpentine wax ground...

Drypoint is great for not needing any of the above. Just sucks that you can't see the image well while working and your lines may disappear after a few prints. I don't think I can avoid acid etching at all, given how dark my motifs are. sighhh

Moon above the sea at Daimotsu Bay - Benkei, from the series One hundred aspects of the moon. January 1886. Artist. Tsukioka Yoshitoshi.  The full moon was considered an excellent time for fishing but during Obon it was believed that the dead return to visit the living. Because of this fishing at this time was forbidden in order to avoid bad luck.
