i’ve started to see posts that are like, “being attracted to fat/trans/etc people isn’t inherently a fetish!” and that’s true but some of them are now following up with “also it’s okay to have a fetish for those groups” and i feel like people are starting to lose sight of what people are criticizing when they condemn fetishizing marginalized people’s bodies.

cuz the issue isn’t like. the attraction. and i know sometimes well-meaning people interpret it that way but the issue that people are discussing when they say these things is the fact that these fetishes are in fact tied to bigotry and tied to this voyeuristic perspective of fat or trans or disabled people and their bodies being this sexual spectacle. there’s like, a difference between your type being fat people (which i think is what a lot of people are talking about when they use the word “fetish” in these posts) and viewing fat people as this hideous sex spectacle and tying your disgust and desire to degrade fat people with your desire to have sex with them, or things like that. and that’s not really directly interchangeable between marginalized people but the spirit is the same. and so that’s i think what people are missing is that the term fetishization here isn’t (largely) being used to condemn attraction to people but to condemn a specific type of bigoted sexualization that doesn’t actually root its attraction in like, attraction from one human being towards another.
