you are the first person i would trust in writing the chronicles of yuuri katsuki being a certified accidental heartbreaker, encompassing his conquests from hasetsu to detroit to even the streets of russia
katsuki yuuri looks so lost and tired and terrified during freshers week that every fratboy throughout the entire campus of wayne state university feels the urge to die defending him. football star players hold doors open for yuuri. burned-out law students offer him their energy drinks. the welfare reps smile at him in the corridors. the cleaning lady on the fourth floor of the library and the janitor in charge of the bathroom where yuuri goes to cry are very, very fond of yuuri, which is something yuuri can get used to and is comfortable with. crusty old professors on tenure wake up cursing the godforsaken drunken hormone-ridden and lazy creatures that are college students and then yuuri walks past the open doorways of their classrooms on his way to a lecture and the professors feel their spirits lift momentarily. who is this boy. who is he, ask the hockey players who hang back after their practice as yuuri gently, unobtrusively, but firmly commandeers the ice rink for the rest of the evening. who is he, say the dance majors, flicking through the names of everyone they know yet unable to place the guy who effortlessly picks up break-dancing and pole-dancing like he was born for this. who is he, wonders the cashier at the breakfast shop in st. petersburg where yuuri comes every morning to ask for a coffee in his hesitant yet charming russian. they will never know. he slips from their minds instantly. he comes into their lives like a whisper of butterfly wings and glides on, oblivious, having made numerous strangers’ days just that little bit better and left a trail of conquered hearts in his wake
KATSUKI YUURI

These screenshots could never do it justice but this scene of Cheng Xiaoshi desperately and excruciatingly crying as his own trauma mixes with the feelings of Chen Xiao, directly followed by a shot of Lu Guang with his face hidden from view, always made me feel sorrowful; even when first watching the show.
But now, knowing just how deeply Lu Guang cares about Cheng Xiaoshi and how far he is actually willing to go for him, it hits even harder.
Because Lu Guang is hearing everything Cheng Xiaoshi is going through at that moment. He can hear his gut-wrenching crying; can hear him saying he is afraid of being alone; can hear him scream out not only for the client’s mom but his own as well.
And it’s Lu Guang who put him in that situation in the first place. By not telling him about the earthquake beforehand; by not letting CXS decide and prepare himself for it. He thought he’d have CXS finish the mission quickly and never let him know what happened after. Trying to completely shelter him from any and all harm and it backfires dramatically.
Before this frame, Lu Guang tells him:
Tumblr media
but CXS never does and Lu Guang can’t intervene. All he can do is watch. And try to experience it with him. Trying to fully feel the consequences of what he did.
And we deliberately don’t see his face. We don’t know what expression is on Lu Guang’s face as he has to watch the one in his heart fall apart - because of his choices. All we do see is that Lu Guang too is holding his own hand. Just like CXS is holding the hand of the dying mother, all Lu Guang can do is hold his own hands.
And when CXS comes back he has to act cold and strict again. Because maybe he wasn’t just protecting their rules here. Maybe this Lu Guang is already the one who has to make sure their current present doesn’t change again. Even though he felt sympathy for Chen Xiao and wanted to help him let go of regret (because maybe Lu Guang already knows what that’s like) he still had to be strict about their rules.
Tumblr media
And of course, Cheng Xiaoshi punches him. Wouldn’t you? Not telling him about the earthquake, lying to him about saving the mother and then saying sorry like he barely even cares. Why is his friend so cruel?
Tumblr media
and Lu Guang isn’t surprised. Quite the opposite actually: Lu Guang expected this. Maybe he even welcomes it. He takes the punch, because he too thinks he deserves it. Cheng Xiaoshi doesn’t know why he is doing this and he never will. But at least he can take one punch. Maybe that will ease some of the sorrow in Cheng Xiaoshi’s heart.
But when CXS falls down and starts crying again, Lu Guang can’t keep up the act either. It only takes him a few moments to get back up, walk over to Cheng Xiaoshi again and do what he actually wanted to do from the start:
Tumblr media
Comfort him.
And then you think back to how they hid his face in the first few panels up above and you remember the face he made while telling CXS that he can’t save someone who already died.
Tumblr media
And looking back at it now you realize there was a lot more to this face than just trying to prevent CXS from “doing something stupid”.
Because now we know.
And I’m sure we are all aware that whatever expression was on Lu Guang’s face here:
Tumblr media
seeing it might just break our hearts alongside theirs.

haikyuu is just so…. there are so many pairings and each has a different dynamic and each dynamic is just so intriguing and complex and beautiful? domestic parents daisuga, childhood friends mutual pining iwaoi, childhood friends kuroken but diff from iwaoi (I don’t have to explain that), fanon enemies to lovers sakuatsu, soft asanoya, loyal deep romance bokuaka, outcast-but-not-to-me ushiten, lesbians in the sausage party anime kiyoyachi, lemon boy by cavetown tsukkiyama, rival best friend soulmates kagehina ?? ????? it’s insane to me. plus a found family from each school with its own dynamics. plus everyone in the fandom is so sweet bc everyone understands the SHEER CAPACITY for pairings and stories just…. wow….

serizawa is so fucking funny. he dresses like some shady loan shark scammer but wants to be a teacher. he lied about souta owing him money for no reason whatsoever. he got a beat-up car for cheap and just patched up the door with duct tape when it fell off. he has a road trip playlist and switches songs to match the mood. he was willing to drive a whole seven hours to help this girl he barely knew find his friend no questions asked just because he had the tiniest bit of faith that she knew what to do. like yeah sure souta is hot or whatever but serizawa stole the whole fucking show and i've got nothing but massive respect for him he is THE king of all time and everyone should know it!!

and those gates are formed from the collective pain of seeing a place you once loved gone, left in ruins, so of course only kindess can mend that pain and suffering
no okay I just saw suzume ( already tagged this post for spoilers but this is a warning that they lie ahead for anyone who needs it ) and I can’t stop thinking about how none of their goals could have been accomplished without help from total strangers like
how many long stretches of journey were there, where they never would have made it in time to close the doors before it was too late, were it not for strangers giving and repaying kindness alike?
even from that very first door, it’s implied that if Suzume hadn’t jumped in to help close it, Souta likely wouldn’t have been able to at all. Suzume could have listened to him and run—she chose to help him instead
while Suzume and Souta were the only ones with the ability to actually see and do anything hands on about the worm, it was the kindness of strangers willing to lend a hand that made it possible for them to prevent disaster

The cats being Yin and Yang, the head and tail, Mt. Fuji and the magma beneath it, fire and ice. Love and grief. Daijin being starving and weak but when protecting Suzume, is strong. The cats turning their opposite color when they're at full power. Sadaijin as the mother and Daijin, the child.
It really parallels with the movies theme. The light may be lost but the memories remain. Strangers help, even if they don't know they're helping: Humans rally around a cute cat, making him newsworthy. A friendship is formed over an orange. A small act of kindness multiplies again and again
And in the same way: Adults want to but can't help a child looking for her mother. An aunt harbors resentment towards her ward. A chair man refuses help even when he's incapable of continuing on his own.
But that's not how humans work, is it? That's the movie's point. Suzume's aunt finds her and while she can't bring back her mother, she'll make her a wonderful bento every day and give as much of her love as she can. Tamaki did have some resentments, but they don't overshadow her love for Suzume. Souta accepts Suzume's help. Even though he asks her st most every turn to stay safe, he admires her will to do what's right.
That's humanity at its core: Duality

OH SNAP THE FACT THAT SADAIJIN IS SO MUCH BIGGER AND STRONGER AND THAN DAIJIN
Sadaijin because his gate is in the heart of Tokyo where life is rich and bustling and while the gate is still in a place forgotten, the people still live to nurture the land on which it sits. And also highly likely that since his gate protects against the head of the worm, he will move with it and so remains it’s keeper this whole time.
Meanwhile Daijin’s post moves around often and has been broken before. And you find it in the middle of a forgotten town where no people go near. He doesn’t hesitate to discard his position as keystone to fill that loneliness. Which suggests the western keystone does it much more often than the eastern one. That’s why Daijin is weak and smalland emaciated and desperate for love from someone who has offered him kindness.
Which the whole film is about. Community kindness. Strangers helping those in need. First Suzume helping Souta close the door. Then feeding Daijin when he comes by. Both are moved by her kindness and try to repay her along the way. And this kindness continues to get paid forward as numerous people help her out along her journey. And she doesn’t hesitate to try and return the favour. She helps clean at Chika’s house when they let her stay over. She helps the Mama with her bar and babysits her kids.
Tl;dr: Sadaijin is big boy and stronk bc not lonely. Daijin is small boi and weak bc lonely. Suzume helped him not feel lonely anymore. But he still returned to his post because he loved her.

Text
There's something so deeply profound about Suzume's ideas about how people love the land, and how in return the land loves its people. That the separation of people from the places they love is a trauma so deep, not just in the people but in the land itself, these lonely places that are abandoned, that it ripples and builds and breaks the world again.
That you heal that wound by remembering how people loved that place, and then let it go. You remember the love and happiness. And then you return it to the gods. That you grieve the land like you grieve a person- you have to remember it, love it, before you can really heal from its loss.
