“lena, can we use your resources at luthor corp to build (x mechanism)?” kara asks lena, oblivious to lena’s current state of unemployment.

“actually, kara. I, um. I no longer work there.” lena anwers, a little shy, as if she still can’t quite believe what she’s done, as if she’s nervous to see how kara will respond, because since the moment she’s made her decision all she wanted was to tell kara, to tell her person.

“you left luthor corp?” kara’s eyes go wide in surprise, her mouth curved in the ghost of a smile. lena can hardly bear to look her in the face, looking at kara beaming like that is like looking at the sun, and lena doesn’t think she can bear it, doesn’t think she deserves kara looking at her like that anymore. but god, she craves it. craves her validation, her approval. it’s all lena’s ever wanted. it’s all she’s ever needed.

she nods her head a little in confirmation, as if she hadn’t just made the biggest life-altering move she’s ever done. but it’s all she can really manage with kara looking at her like that.

“lena....i am so proud of you.” kara reaches for lena, pulling her into her strong arms, tucking her under her chin and making lena feel so small in the best of ways.

and that’s all it takes. it’s all it takes for lena to crumble, sobbing into kara’s arms. she’s missed this so much, these arms wrapped around her, it feels like coming home. she almost can’t believe she gets to have this again, almost wonders if she moves too quickly the mirage will disappear.

but it’s kara, she’s here. and she’s proud of lena. and it’s enough for lena to know she’s made the right decision. fuck luthor corp, fuck her family. this right here? is all that really matters. and it scares lena. it’s probably the most scared lena’s ever been in her life, but she knows with kara by her side, she can do just about anything. and she will.
