Do you have any recommendations for Filipino movies, series or books? I'd like to learn more about SEA cultures, so engaging with stories set in the Philippines and written by Filipinos would be great :)
hey there, sorry i answered this so late! the unfortunate thing is that i don't engage with enough local media to comfortably recommend anything, especially if they're going to be the basis through which a non-local approaches the culture. that being said, i did ask some of my friends who do for some recommendations, and here's what they gave me:
Graphic Novels / Comics:
Trese by Budjette Tan (also has an animated adaptation on Netflix, i think)
Strange Natives: The Forgotten Memories of a Forgetful Old Woman by Paolo Herras
Books / Anthologies:
May Day Eve by Nick Joaquin
The Collected Stories of Gregorio C. Brillantes
Bagets: An Anthology of Filipino Young Adult Fiction
Patron Saints of Nothing by Randy Ribay
Neil Gaiman Presents the Philippine Graphic Fiction Awards Prose Anthology
Alternative Alamat by Paolo Chikiamco
i know a lot of my filipino mutuals here are also pretty big into local media, so if any of you see this post, please feel free to give your own reccs! gives me something to go through, too.
how have you been enjoying the kamen riders!! which ones are you having a good time with
this is gonna be a long one, so i'm gonna put the full answer under a Read More!
so i actually have a spreadsheet i made to keep track of the series that i've completed and how i feel about each one as i finish them, but i'm definitely not gonna make that public.
since march of last year i've pretty much watched ALL of it, barring the original 1971 series (which i put down after like 20 episodes, intending to watch it Properly at a Later Date), Black, Black RX, Saber (which i could not, for the life of me, keep personal interest in), Zero One, and Gotchard (which i'm waiting to finish but have heard promising things about).
i think my general consensus is that as a franchise, Kamen Rider is 100% my jam and i hold it in my heart dearly, and is something that consistently rewards you for engaging with it earnestly, but a lot of the individual season are just kind of ok!
even the "bad" seasons that i used to be constantly warned about ended up being just kinda boring to get through (like Wizard and Ghost), but i always found something to appreciate about them anyway. a lot of the "good" seasons that i always saw hyped also kinda fell flat for me (like Gaim and Build).
the standout individual seasons that i really enjoyed were V3, Stronger, Kuuga, Blade, "that" half of Hibiki, and W - all of which i think are seasons that pay tribute to that original ideal i really like of the Kamen Rider being this tireless, incorruptible warrior of justice that fights for humanity. i think Kuuga in particular i super enjoyed having come from several other Heisei stuff first, since it was so surprisingly different and refreshing despite being like, the starting point for that era.
that being said, i think after watching alla these seasons i'm realizing that the main enjoyment i get outta the franchise is just knowing who all these funny guys are more deeply having that pool of knowledge to draw from. all of it is just so fascinating to me, from pre-production stuff, to the individual actors and whether or not they'll ever reprise their roles again, to the actual meat of the narratives that usually have at least one thing i can appreciate, even if they don't always stick the landing.
it's funny bug men slapping rubber suits together, but it's also so much more and i love it
i think i enjoy saying things here way more than on twitter, so if anyone wants to shoot me asks about anything, please feel free and i’ll try to answer them as sincerely as possible (unless they’re really really weird and offputting)!
spent a good chunk of last year tryna track down and collect every item from Banpresto's "Past Kamen Rider Figure Keychain" series that ran from 2003 - 2005 (Series 5 is weirdly elusive and expensive, for some reason...)
now that i've moved out, i can finally (very shoddily) display them!
>> mage design comm request form here <<
i'm still going through my waitlist, but i thought it might be a good idea to set up a proper google form so people can just chuck requests at me whenever. all the relevant information should be in the form, but to summarize:
use em for anything except ai, blockchain or crypto-related projects
I work best when given lots of room for personal interpretation, but feel free to indicate in the form if you want any specific design elements or aesthetics incorporated into the design
no dnd player character requests. sorry! not super comfortable with designing something personal like that atm
hey there! i'm going to start working on a new batch soon (the grind never stops when you have to pay bills 😔), so if anyone's interested in getting a wizard design, please feel free to go through the form!
