“Hey, I didn’t shut her out, man. Not even a call I can make. I’m just the muscle. Get on Fury’s dick about that. Alls I’m saying is the girl’s dangerous. Like, global destruction, psycho Willow, dangerous. Just gonna lay it out for you, B. My life? It’s finally a life. I’m getting married, for shit’s sake… if they launch Maximoff back into the fray and it all goes sideways? I got skin in this game. I’m not about to risk Banner over it. Think I won’t get real dangerous, real fast? Think again.”

“Meow. Remind me not to…” Wait a second! Did Buffy just hear that correctly? Because it sure as hell sounded a lot like marriage. You know, a term one would only use when they’re on their way to, well, getting married. And no way would her sister Slayer drop a bomb like that without so much as a flinch. Come to think of it, was Faith even the marrying type?

Buffy had always assumed not, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t taking this seriously, the mug her hands are wrapped around pressed faintly against her lips as her brows squish together in curiosity. When she finally lowers her coffee to speak she does so quizzically, but still shooting for casual, “That’s funny. For a second there it sounded like…”

Holy cow, there it is. Right there. The answer that’s been in front of her all this time, although Buffy was either too dumb or too caffeinated to realize it.

Having seriously lost all interest in her coffee she places it aside without ceremony before reaching for Faith’s hand - the one showcasing a massive chunk of rock and without permission. Buffy stares down at it in awe, mouth agape and trying to muster up a response - any kind of response, but when she manages to do so it’s without any kind of eloquence, “Get out!”

“What’s astonishing even now is to look at the cast line-up of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Not just Buffy herself, but also best friend Willow the witch, Willow’s girlfriend Tara, nemesis-come-wary-ally Cordelia, ex-demon Anya, mother-in-a-trying-situation Joyce and latterly, the mystically-created sister Dawn. So often now, a “strong woman” in a TV show or a movie will be almost entirely isolated from other women - from Katniss Everdeen trying to survive the Hunger Games to Sandra Bullock’s character in Gravity, from Carrie Mathison in Homeland to Daenerys Targaryan in Game of Thrones - female friendship, let alone having conversations with several women, seems utterly impossible for many of today’s female characters. What Buffy showed us is that having one strong female character per show - even if she’s well-written, interesting and complex - just isn’t enough. After all, you can’t pass the Bechdel Test with just one woman in the cast. When I first saw Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I naively thought it would spell the beginning of a new wave of television and movies - ones where the women characters could be written as well as the men, where women would take the lead as often as men and where they would be surrounded by many other female characters. It hasn’t happened yet. But I continue to hope that it will. And until we’ve made TV like that, Buffy will continue to seem new, fresh and revolutionary”

And, that’s about all she’s got in her. Doesn’t really wanna hear the heartfelt Scooby Privilege about just how hard it is to be excluded from the group — given her history with them, it’s best to take a fucking breath and let it go.

                     So, she does. Starts to slowly pull apart the orange roll on her plate, tearing off a little piece of fluff to stuff in her mouth and keep her from going off on the Willow thing. When Buffy asks about Wanda, she shrugs, “No, dude. Trust me. You don’t wanna mess with Maximoff. Girl’s powerful, yeah, but she’s like one french fry short of a Happy Meal. Seriously messed up — like I was. Same rage, man, but backed with power like I never saw before. Vision’s got her upstate, keepin’ her calm in the suburbs. Best let her live her life, keep her out of the city.”

“Gee, that bad?” Buffy sounds surprised, but it’s purely for effect. Of course she knew about Pietro - Wanda’s twin brother and how he died rescuing Clint and some young kid’s life. Everyone did. Buffy felt for her, but maybe Faith was right. Some personalities can’t be controlled and if they’re spiced with magicks (the likes of which the world has never seen) the second and smartest thing one can do is to isolate it. Willow taught her that.

Still, it felt like backward thinking. Punishment and different rules for having power - sure it made a whole load of sense on paper (greater risk n’all), but that whole icky factor behind it has Buffy feeling the urge to make some kind of stand here, “Not forever though, right? I mean, who knows what she’s thinking, what she’s feeling. You know, maybe she does want to help.” A light shrug of her shoulders “Maybe she can.” Buffy raises her mug to her lips, about to take another sip,” Guess we’ll find out soon enough. From what I’ve heard Vision seems wicked keen in getting her on scene again. Guess it’s not really our jurisdiction.”
