Remembering showcases past
Melissa Weltner performs a monologue from Tennessee Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof in Jade Esteban Estrada's 1st Annual Actors Showcase. One of my favorite photos of that glorious night.

Clean comedy night in Jefferson
Oh, how I love a good challenge.
I totally enjoyed doing clean comedy this weekend in Jefferson, Texas, the state’s fifth oldest town! Thank you to my comedy brother Omar Tarango for the queer opportunity to spread my wings sans feathers, and to Mickey and the 1852 on Austin staff for the delicious hospitality. What a swanky venue!
Don't worry. I didn't throw the blue jokes out with the bathwater.

Comedy night in Northridge
I feel lucky to have been part of this incredible St. Patrick's Night lineup at The Open Book in Northridge! Performing in a room full of books hits different!
The wonderful and deeply hilarious Lauren Yang curated and hosted a phenomenal holiday show that included improv, clowning, stand-up, music, dance, and storytelling. There was literally something for everyone.
Huge thanks to Nathaniel for the hospitality.
Until next time, my talented friends!

Thank you, Phoenix, Avondale, and Catalina
Feeling inspired and invigorated after a beautiful week in the American Southwest! 🌵
I kicked off the journey in New Mexico, attending my mother's birthday dinner, then I accompanied her to a Valentine's dance at her senior center. I enjoy dancing with her (she pretends to let me lead but she's really kind of leading), but I truly love watching her dance with others. She's such a graceful dancer.
On Thursday, I performed at The Purple Turtle in Phoenix, and the following evening, at Backstreet Asia in Avondale. Thank you to Jesse Ever for the awesome experience and the hospitality.
Saturday night, I had the honor of headlining Comedy in Catalina at Catalina Craft Pizza. This comedy series is downright magical because of the energy and light that Kenny Shade puts into it. Huge thank you for having me back and for welcoming us into your comedy and real-life family.
I had the pleasure of working with some fantastic comedians, many of whom were new to me. I hope to cross paths with them again soon.
I also got to have Irish tea with my burlesque family in El Paso. Thank you Feisty, Max, Maggie, Bailey, and Clementine for inviting me into your colorful, fun-filled world.
Make time for the people you love, do what makes you happy, and don't forget to moisturize.
See you soon, East Texas!

Rest in power, Chita Rivera
I wanted to post about this yesterday, but it took me a full 24 hours to process the news of Chita Rivera’s passing.
Chita was a theatrical force of nature. In 1993, I had the good fortune of seeing her in Kiss of the Spider Woman on Broadway, and, a few years later, in an intimate cabaret show that featured only her and two male dancers. She seemed like the kind of person who enjoyed keeping busy between big shows so that she wouldn’t get rusty. As all dancers know, the body forgets! I remember how those young men lifted her up, flipped her in the air, and all the while she was in complete control of her body, belting out her songs in her signature style. She was about 60 years young at the time. It was so inspiring!
As the years passed, I’d occasionally see her at Ripley-Grier Studios, where auditions and rehearsals continue to take place. She was warm and kind to everyone, particularly to the young dancers, and she was always smiling. When she passed by, one got the sense that they were in the presence of greatness.
It’s also worth mentioning that, at a time when Latino performers were aligning themselves with Latino activism, Chita was, first and foremost, a Broadway performer who just happened to be of Puerto Rican descent on her father’s side.
I thought I’d share before the tides of time sweep us away to the next big thing.
Rest in power, Chita.
For the interested: Here’s “Gimme Love,” a number from Kiss of the Spider Woman. Classic Kander and Ebb, it’s the song that will always remind me of her.
