@phantom-of-notre-dame Lol, that might have been mine.
Tumblr media
Idk if this motif was ever used in another fanfic, I never stumbled upon it.
Still, what I meant here was that Erik's love of wine might have caused him some liver issues which would result in a yellowish skin and eye WHITES.
When it comes to the glowing effect, I too headcanon that it's due to the tapetum lucidum which normally only occurs in nocturnal animals. The color of the eyeshine is related, among other things, to the color of your pupils, so if Erik's were a light brown, ginger or even greenish (I headcanon it's brown with specs of green), his eyes would glow a yellowish color, regardless of whether his whites were jaundiced or not. In fact in the fanfic (if it was indeed mine the one that you read) he no longer has liver issues but his eyes still glow yellow.
There exists a condition called leukokoria which makes the eye look like this
Tumblr media
HOWEVER this doesn't cause the eye to literally glow in the dark. On top of that, it's a sign of one or other disease that would also cause bad eyesight (or in extreme cases even death by the time you reach puberty). And Erik's eyesight seems anything but bad.
So eyeshine it is. A tapetum lucidum paired with a dark-ish colored iris explain both the "invisible in light" but "blazing in the dark" eyes as well as Erik's ability to see exceptionally well in the dark. But people can't have eyeshine, or can they?
GUESS WHAT, I once stumbled upon some article or video or something of some kid in India I think who could see perfectly in almost absolute darkness and it turned out that, by means of some weird and uber rare mutation, he HAD A TAPETUM LUCIDUM!
So if the Indian boy could have it, so could Erik. It probably came in package with the rast of his deformities and would sure add to his parents horror upon first seeing him.
does anyone know why in the original poto book erik’s eyes are yellow and glow?? like is that even possible? is there even an explanation to this?

Guys, there's more of this :

I'M WHEEZING xd
I just found out I turned half the male population gay
Story goes, a couple of years ago I digital painted this accursed image:
Tumblr media
I don’t visit tumblr all that much these days but today I did, and I found a comment that said something along the lines of “Is this the original Ricardo Megamind meme?” and I was like “WHAT MEME?”. So I googled it and:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
MY NAME IS MARLENA. I AM (or was until my tools broke) A DIGITAL ARTIST FROM POLAND.  AND I PAINTED THIS SH**
I don’t mind it being a meme. It’s a fanart. I painted it for fun and because I really like that movie. I see this entire thing as a form of flattery. Also, you’re welcome, since this may be the closest you will ever see of a “live-action” Megamind (and considering how all the recent remakes of old classics are, it may be for the best).
I only want to know one thing, WHO THE F** IS THIS RICARDO?

So I decided to go through with the idea of turning my fanfic into a comicbook. I was already toying with it when I was writing the story since I like to draw and had a very clear visual of everyone and everything I was writing about. Then recently I discovered some of my older concept art was reposted without my knowledge to pinterest and people thought it was from a comicbook and wanted to read it. So I thought I'd give them what they want and have some fun along the way.
If you like PotO and graphic novels this might be the thing for you.
To keep things in order I created a separate subaccount @anothervoice-phancomic so if you're interested, please follow that one since updates will be posted there. If you have questions or comments, leave an ask on my main @jadeite-art
There also exists an older version of this intro sequence but I hated it so I made this new one which is much nicer

@ladystormcrow OMG YASSS! I'd watch the sh** outta this
reading Phantom of the Opera and the romance and suspense are good and all but it’s actually amazing that this is written with the narrative framing and cadence of an overwrought and vaguely insensitive true crime podcast.
Gaston Leroux every few paragraphs: And now let’s take a look at a chat log from one of the phantom’s victims. It should be noted that victim in question was an ugly loser lol.

PotO: Erik's house floor plan (book based)
Tumblr media
While there already exists a pretty cool floor plan of Erik's house (this one) it's constructed around the idea that there is a shore or rock formation on which the house is built and that it looks like an actual house. That didn't sit with me as the book clearly says that the house is built inside the double casing of the foundation, so I made my own model. And yes, I totally built it in the Sims.
Things we know from Leroux that helped me build the model:
The placement of the house in between the inner and outer wall of the foundation suggests that it would be roughly rectangle-shaped
There must be some kind of small platform on which you could step out from the boat. A hidden mechanism must then move a part of the wall to reveal the actual door to the house, similar to the entrance from the third cellar
The entrance from the Lake opens directly to the drawing room. I'm no expert on Victorian architecture but it appears to me that a drawing room is basically a living and based on some photos of Victorian houses I saw I concluded that there'd be a fireplace and possibly some shelves for books, even if they are not directly mentioned in the novel. Erik would also surely have a rug. Persian of course ;-)
A door in the drawing room leads directly into the Louis-Philippe room. Connected directly to it there is also an en-suite bathroom. There is also an additional door that supposedly leads to the Torture Chamber. There is a fireplace (Erik/Christine mention the scorpion and grasshopper boxes on the mantelpiece), a bed set, some kind of sofa, and a chest of drawers.
Considering how the Torture Chamber is shaped and what it does, as well as the fact that Daroga is unable to find the hidden latch on the wall that the Chamber shares with Louis-Philippe (the wall on which the peeping window must be located) I concluded that the door mentioned by Christine must actually lead to a sort of oddly shaped room/corridor that goes around the chamber where the heating system and mechanical elements are located (this unfortunately couldn't be properly rendered due to the limitations of the game). From there you can access the actual Chamber by pushing a plain frameless door. Since it opens inwards and has no handles, in order to open it from the Chamber, you'd have to resort to some kind of spring system as described in the book.
We know that the dining is accessed from the drawing room. Considering it's the dining, it must also be connected to a kitchen and pantry from which, I'd assume, one could access the cellars with wine, water, and whatever else Erik might keep in there
After dinner, Erik takes Christine's hand and shows her his room. There is no mention of them first going back to the drawing room. That led me to believe that the door to Erik's room is located in the dining room. The drawing room has enough doors as is anyway.
Leroux mentions a pipe organ that takes up an entire wall. I know organs are large but I think it would be the narrower one. Then we have the coffin in the middle (unfortunately the Sims didn't have anything I could use as the canopy), a desk the exact location of which is unknown but I'd place it near the organ, possibly some wardrobe or chest of drawers, and probably a door to another en-suite bathroom as I imagine he wouldn't be using the one attached to the Louis-Philippe.
If you like the model feel free to use it / reference it in your fanart or fanfic :-)

Fictional relationship cannot be divided into healthy and unhealthy. Because they are fictional, they can only be divided into interesting or boring. And the same applies to fictional people.
must a fictional relationship be “healthy” or “functional”? is it not enough to simply watch two made up people destroy each other, hand in unlovable hand???

Erik test doodle. I have my old design sheets from 2017 but I felt I needed to fix his mask a bit since the old one was, idk, too rounded? I got some inspo from some art I found on pinterest and this looks much better.

Lately I've been tempted to turn my old poto fanfic into a comicbook which is something I had wanted to do at one point, years ago, before I pretty much quit drawing, turning to other semi-creative outlets like photography and modeling, only to find myself drained by it all within a couple years. After a long transitional period I start to emerge from my own personal dark pit and I feel like drawing again and this just came up, partially due to someone asking me to translate the fanfic for them (which I did and thet even read it). Will I go through with it? Idk - comic-writing is a lenghty process afterall - but I might as well try. For now I just comic-fied the intro sequence as a test.

I finally created something akin to a cover art for the one and only poto fanfic I have ever written. It took me six years to do it xd
The layout is heavily inspired by the painting "Dracula" by Arantzazu Martinez.

In the spirit of encouraging people to comment on fanfics while also making it easier to do so, I feel obliged to share a browser extension for ao3 that has quite literally revolutionized the comment game for me.
I present to you: the floating ao3 comment box!
From what I've seen, a big problem for many people is that once you reach the comments at the bottom of a fic, your memory of it miraculously disappears. Anything you wanted to say is stuck ten paragraphs ago, and you barely remember what you thought while reading. This fixes that!
I'll give a little explanation on the features and how it works, but if you want to skip all that, here's the link.
The extension is visible as a small blue box in the upper left corner.
(Side note: The green colouring is not from the extension, that's me.)
Tumblr media
If you click on it, you open a comment box window at the bottom of your screen but not at the bottom of the fic. I opened my own fic for demonstrative purposes.
Tumblr media
The website also gives explanations on how exactly it functions, but I'll summarize regardless.
insert selection -> if you highlight a sentence in the fic it will be added in italics to the comment box
add to comment box -> once you're done writing your comment, you click this button and the entire thing will automatically copied to the ao3 comment box
delete -> self explanatory
on mulitchapter fics, you will be given the option to either add the comment to just the current chapter or the entire fic
The best part? You can simply close the window the same way you opened it and your progress will automatically be saved. So you can open it, comment on a paragraph, and then close it and keep reading without having the box in your face.
Comments are what keep writers going, and as both a writer and a reader, I think it's such an easy way of showing support and enthusiasm.

Hey! I read Another Voice a while ago and absolutely loved it! I saw the art you made on pinterest and I don't usually read fics from fandoms I'm not familiar with but the piece you made, made me want to read Another Voice. I loved the writing and the characters so much! And I have a little something to ask. So I recently started getting videos of people binding their favourite fics into books and now I really want to do that myself. I was wondering if it would be okay with you that I bound Another Voice? (and if not okay I totally understand and I'll bind another fic) I would be doing it all by myself from typesetting to binding and it would be for my own bookshelf. (and I still wanted to say how much i enjoyd the fic❤️!) (sorry for the long/little over sharing message, hope you respond :) )
Thank you so much for your kind words. I wrote that fanfic so long ago and it amazes me that new people get to find it and actually read it (I think most of them give it up once they see it's not E+C).
As for pinterest, my old account where I had the tumblr images linked had been taken down at some point. I recently made a new one and saw that my artwork is circulating there, just uploaded by another person without a link or credit or any sort of explanation of what it is. And what frustrates me about this is that people like it and wanna know what it's about - I can tell by the comments - but without a proper credit they can't figure it out.
As for printing and binding the fanfic, you have my permission to do it. As long as you don't go and sell it under your name you can do whatever you want with it. Print it, bind it, share it. I'm cool with it.
My only request - and this goes to everyone else who wants to do the same - is that you download it from AO3 not ff.net since that will always be the most recently updated and grammatically correct version. You may also leave me an ask with your email so I can send you a printable pdf.

Hoo boy, you're probably going to get a flood of Ricardo-based asks...
I have indeed gotten a flood of them, most explaining who that meme-person is. And even one warning me about him flashing his junk xd
People, I am a grown ass woman as you might tell from the photo. My innocence is long gone. These things have absolutely no effect on me whatsoever.
Also, you can stop explaining who Ricardo is. One time was more than enough xd
