the musician has joined the cashier queue mere moments ago, but already, she’s shuffling back and forth from one foot to the other, willing the line to move faster. she’s not exactly an impatient individual, or a spoiled one either — despite her somewhat privileged upbringing and, now, rising fame — it’s more that she would just prefer to get her food and go, if possible, so she can get back to headquarters. she looks up from the sandwich and water she’s holding in her hand and peers to the front of the line, where there seems to be a hold up. the person in question... where has she seen him before? once she realizes what’s going on, she weaves in-and-out to get to the counter ( after some very profuse ‘sorry!’s ) and without a moment’s hesitation, covers the transaction for her own food as well as the other’s. she isn’t doing it to be a hero. if anything, it’s just pissed her off to see how impatient people can be when it comes to purchasing their god-damn lunch. “back when i was in college, prices like these really fucked me off, so i get it.” she shrugs, offering a smile and turning to leave – but not before giving a confident middle fingered gesture to the rude asshole that had been cursing under his breath behind them. addressing the other as they head out, she remembers— “hey, you’re new at cadence, right? i think i’ve seen you around the building.”

sure, things are a little awkward — but it’s been long enough since the breakup for jade to make the simple and harmless gesture of buying her a drink, right?  the bar she spots her ex-girlfriend at is such a quiet little hidden gem – favored by hollywood’s famous faces due to its intimate exclusivity – that she figures it’s the perfect place to maybe have a quick catch-up. she doesn’t know how things will go — how the dynamic between them will be... after all, they’ve seen each other around the label’s headquarters, events, different social gatherings and parties etc. but if her memory isn’t failing her, this will be the first time they’ve sat down and properly communicated since they cut off their romantic involvement. slipping into the bar stool next to aria, she gives a warm, albeit slightly sheepish, smile. “you waiting for someone, or something? feels weird to see the great aria vega sat all on her lonesome.”

  “ why men great ‘til they gotta be great? don’t text me, tell it straight to my face”, willow sang loudly air pods in as she danced around the studio kitchen. it was late, really really late and so she figured everyone had gone home for the day. she had stayed well into the night, working on a few demos for incarnadine second album. she had been spending most of her time tied up in the studio, not that she minded it felt more like fun than work. the young women continued to dance around while singing, making a cup of coffee as she did. “hey, I’m glad you’re back with your bitch I mean who would wanna hide this? I will never, ever, ev-holy shit”, willow stuttered out as she turned to lock eyes with someone else. they scared the absolute shit out of her, not to mention the fact they just witnessed her making a bit of a fool out of herself. she pulled her air pods out with a sheepish look on her face, “I don’t suppose I can ask you to never ever mention what you just saw to another soul could I?” 

anyone would think jade had no reason to be at the studio. vortex were definitely having some downtime right now, since work on their next release was currently only in the songwriting stages, nowhere near ready to hit the recording booth. but, to jade’s upmost joy, another band had invited her to do some of the guitar work on their latest record — something she loved doing, especially during quiet spells in her commitments to her own band. they’d worked pretty late into the evening, and hung out for a while there afterwards ( she always found hanging out with other musicians to be such a blast ) before she’d said her goodbyes to the group a few moments ago, and headed to the kitchen to get a last minute snack for the drive home. an amused smile pulled at her lips as she headed towards the room, totally ready to join in with them, assuming it’d be someone she knew ( with cadence having their own personal recording studios, it was rare there’d ever be someone there you didn’t know. ) and of course, it was. however, when she realized exactly who was the source of the singing, her urge to join in when she got to the room morphed into a sheepish wave and a small, awkward smile. “oh, willow..!” she laughed a little. “it’s been ages... oh, don’t worry. your secret’s safe with me — i’d probably have been doing the same.” she nods, speaking with as comforting and reassuring of a tone as possible. of course, the situation would only be as awkward as they made it, but it had been a long time since willow and jade had hung out together ever since the latter girl’s great ghosting of dakota. she knew through social media and the grapevine that those two were still friends, and she’d be lying to herself if she said she hadn’t wondered if their relationship had developed into something more since she’d ended her friendship with him ( and, subsequently, her. ) weird. the three of them were such close friends. like the musketeers, almost. things were different now. “what keeps you here so late?”

sometimes LA life was… tiring. maybe not for everyone, but it certainly was for jade. the truth was that it overwhelmed her a bit, and although she was extremely grateful for her music career, she could get a little burnt out by it. cosima always seemed to have her shit together — LA life never seemed like it was affecting her in the same way, but jade knew that everyonecould use a break sometimes – even the most badass of people, like her bandmate. plus, they had earned it — they had worked super hard lately with album promo and things were going great. a celebratory sleepover was definitely in order.

she knocks on cosima’s front door, equipped with some groceries ( of the snack variety ) and an overnight bag. her guitar’s also slung over her shoulder, in case of a jam session. “cosima chase, clear your schedule baby, because it’s girl’s night. got it?” she grins, comfortable enough with the other to walk into her place unprovoked.

a soft “oh, my goodness—” bubbles from jade’s lips as she practically leaps from her seat. “are you some kind of wizard? maybe a fairy? you make that look easy,” she laughs softly, reaching out and relieving her of one of the trays, setting it down on the nearest surface as soon as they reach one. it didn’t really feel... natural to jade that someone was bringing her coffee — of course, it should, because those kinds of conveniences have been a privilege of hers ever since vortex took off. she just never really got used to them. “what’s got you behaving all first-half-of-the-movie-andrea-sachs? you’re an important lady!” she chuckles. it was true that the coffee run hadn’t been something she’d seen venus do for a long time. “don’t worry, girlie — i don’t think anyone will mind much. it’s all just coffee beans and too much sugar, at the end of the day. pretty much the same thing, no matter how you spin it. anyone that says otherwise is a coffee snob and can feel my wrath.”

the brunette floats through the foyer of cadence’s headquarters after a successful meeting with her band’s manager. she’s in a particularly good mood today — just one of those days, she supposes, when everything just feels like it’s going right. of course, with every perfect day, there’s always the possibility of something – or someone – bringing that string of great events to a standstill. life has a way of throwing its curve balls, doesn’t it? she reaches the exit, and is about to leave the building when she hears footsteps behind her. almost instinctively, she leans her back against the glass, keeping the door open for them. “fair warning, i’m pretty clumsy so if i slip and spill this coffee all o—”

as her eyes flutter upwards to the other, her heart seems to stop for a moment. “dakota,” she breathes, battling speechlessness. “what—” she stops herself in her tracks. stupid question. she knows exactly what he’s doing here. she’s followed everything he’s done as dekode ever since he went solo, and she knew he’d recently signed to cadence. it just never really sunk in that she would inevitably bump into him. “man, it’s been a while, hasn’t it?”

EX–ROOMMATE / OLD BEST FRIEND / SLOW BURN LOVE INTEREST — when jade dropped out of UCLA, she would’ve had no choice but to move back home to seattle if it wasn’t for meeting this person. they were a fellow musician who she was a fan of, and met by chance shortly before she dropped out. oh, the perfect timing of it all – they had a spare room, and jade moved in, ecstatic with the opportunity to stay in LA and chase her music dreams. she only lived with this person for about sixth months, but the friendship developed quickly, and for her it morphed into romantic feelings. she tried everything to show them, but they remained seemingly clueless, and so once the ball started rolling with her band she moved out for the good of her heart and found her own place. she distanced herself until their friendship faded altogether, but she just found out they’re also signed to cadence. after some years of growth, maybe it’s time to rebuild the friendship, and see where things go naturally. — TAKEN BY DAKOTA MOORE @dekoded
