Shocker: There Is No Universal Three Fold Law In Wicca

The popular misconception that there is a Wiccan Rule or Law of Three or Threefold Return comes from a misinterpretation of a passage in a work of fiction written by Gerald Gardner, the grandfather of modern Wicca. The book was called High Magic’s Aid, and he wrote it with the permission of his High Priestess. It had to be fiction because at that point, witchcraft was still illegal in Britain. In that book and its fictional story, the protagonist undergoes a sort of initiation rite in which he is taught “mark well when thou receivest good, so equally art bound to return good threefold.”

This means that when someone does good by a witch, according to the witchcraft teaching in this *very* fictional novel, the witch is bound to return that good threefold. This is a far cry from “anything at all that you send out into the world will return to you threefold.” It actually means that what you do to a witch should be returned by her threefold, and specifically good acts. Which means it’s really, really good for you to bless, help or aid a witch. The idea is that the witch returns things triple, not the universe. The witch is herself the agent of a threefold response, not the universe. So if I, as a witch, do good work for a friend who is not a witch, there is no threefold return in that, because the non-Wiccan person was never taught to return good acts threefold. If I, as a witch, do a good work for my non-witch neighbor, there is no threefold return in that. But if I, as a witch, do a good work for my coven mate or my witch friend, then that friend or coven mate should return that good work threefold. if I, as a witch, do some nasty shit to my asshole neighbor, said neighbor will not return it to me, and even if she were a witch, she would only return it to me threefold if she somehow found out that something had been done to her, and who did it, which means that I did it poorly, and deserve the retribution.

The part in High Magic’s Aid that we are quoting is found on page 188. We recommend anyone who is familiar with the term Rule of Three to give it a read and think about what it really says and what it does not say. Keep in mind that this is a work of fiction which Gerald Gardner wrote to share some very generalized principles of the witchcraft he was taught at a time when witchcraft was still illegal in Britain (1949).

The insanely high number of uneducated voices on the internet that cry out “The Rule of Three!” whenever anyone even mentions negative magick tends to obscure the actual source into oblivion in favor of some fake, fluffy version of this principle which has been applied across the board to all magical undertakings in a rather ignorant and totalitarian manner. So the next time someone yells that phony baloney shit at you, politely inform them to eat a bag of scholarly dicks and drop them the link to this blog.

Keeping Your Magickal Workings Personal & Private

Searching for spells, rituals, etc online is all well and good as long as you use what you find as inspiration to create your own personal magick. Magick only works when it's personal, when it comes from the heart of the witch performing it, not recited from a website or a book. Find a spell or three that you like and pick and choose lines to take from each one to recombine with a line or few words of your own to create your own personal magick. When you use the words, intentions etc of others, it's already been done. It's diluted.

Make it your own!

Protect your personal magick! Don't give others the exact details of your workings. When you do, you dilute your own magick. You're shooting yourself in the foot, as they say. Keep quiet!

To help keep your magick as personal and private as it should be, try these tips:

Write your spells using ink only visible under a blacklight

Use an ancient alphabet as code

Fold your spell using a letter lock

Seal your spellwork with a wax seal

Ways to Cast a Circle or Create a Safe Magickal Space

Ways to Cast Your Circle by Jadis, The Queen of Swords

As I'm sure most of you know, there are many ways to cast a protective circle or create a magickal space. I'm going to list only a few. Feel free to comment with your favorite way!

Directing Energy via your Power Tool of Choice:

The Forefinger of your Dominant Hand

Wand

Athame

Sword

Staff

Create a Physical Border by Tracing the Outline of Your Circle Using:

Salt

Holy Water/ Florida Water

Dirt (from a place that carries energy to enhance your magick ie your backyard, a hospital, a graveyard etc.)

Crystals

Candles

BONUS: When practicing with others, everyone can be included in the casting of the circle. The lead practitioner places their hand into the hand of the person standing next to them in the circle while saying "from my hand to your hand, the circle is cast" Then that person places their other hand in the next person's hand repeating the phrase and so on all the way around until the circle is complete and the lead practitioner declares "we are now between worlds" or whatever your group prefers.

Use the method or methods that feel right or work best for you and/or your group!

Witch in the broom closet? My witch tip is for you is white your book of shadows in code. Why? So if anyone sees it you can simply say it's for DnD. Or perhaps say it's a made up language between you and friends. I personally have mine written in Elvin Script (which is DnD) because it looks the most elegant to me.

But of course do your research. Not all are as simple as A = ¤ (incert Hieratic image). Most of these languages have an actual format to go by. Beside no matter what I post about you should always, always dive deeper into the knowledge if it intrests you.

In addition to the traditional interpretations of the cards and their placements in each spread look out for these things as well:

Lots of Swords - indicate conflict and strife

Lots of Wands - indicate that big changes are on their way

Lots of Pentacles/Coins - indicate financial issues

Lots of Cups - indicate romantic/relationship issues

Lots of 8s - indicate changes and forward movement

Lots of Aces - indicate powerful energy corresponding to the suit’s element (wands/fire, pentacles/earth, cups/water, swords/air)

An abundance of cards from the Major Arcana could be an indication that the querant has little control over their own situation/outcome.

When seeking out a Time Frame in a reading use these correspondences:

Wands - Fire burns fast - Days

Swords - Air flows briskly - Weeks

Cups - Water - moon controls the tides - Months

The Way I Witch...

Merry meet to all of you Tumblr witches out there! I’m Jadis. I’ve been practicing witchcraft for over 20 years. I’ve worked with other witches as well as in solitary practice. I have spent many seasons traveling all over New England and New York working and enjoying the fair and festival circuit. I’ve also been very blessed to have made many friends along the way. I’ve reached a point in my life and craft where I feel a deep rooted calling to share what I’ve learned along the way.
