She ran her fingers through the spine of the books that occupied the shelves in the dim library. No one was in here and it was the only place where she could find some peace and quiet. The King was hosting a ball in the celebration of his son, the prince’s, 27th birthday. It was also a way to find a potential queen. Her job was simply to infiltrate the kingdom and become buddies with the prince, Johnny, but he was making it so hard for her. Throughout her stay, she played the role of a princess who was scouting Johnny and his kingdom, seeing if he was worthy enough to rule over both of their lands. He wasn’t. All he was was an irritating, all-up-in-your-business, know-it-all, prince. Every encounter always began with an argument and ended with nothing resolved, but one or the other had to win. No truce, someone always wins and it was usually her. He annoyed and irritated her, always plucking her last nerves. She was waiting for the right moment to finally return to the headquarters and report to her boss.
Johnny’s kingdom owned the largest land, therefore the largest crops and strong economies. They were kind in providing for the kingdom and its people, but some were greedy enough to infiltrate the kingdom and bring it down on its knees (aka her boss). With her skills and knowledge, she was able to reach the top-earning position to take on this solo mission. If there was another way of earning money, she wouldn’t be in this position. She never came from the luxury at a young age and found herself pick-pocketing the wrong person, who happened to take her in, train her, and become her boss now.
“What are you doing here?” a voice echoed throughout the large library.
She whipped her head around to find the prince, cladded in a lovely black jacket embroidered with gold leaves, vines, and flowers. The precious gems sewn to his jacket deflected the lights outside that she had to angle her head away.
“Ah, just here for some air,” she gave him a small smile.
“In this dusty library?” Johnny snickered.
“Yes, Your Highness, some people enjoy reading,” she mocked and turned back around, continuing to run her fingers through the spines of the books.
“Well some are busy trying to learn how to decently rule the country,” Johnny retorted.
She slightly bowed her head, perhaps she struck a sensitive nerve. Perhaps maybe this wasn’t a good night to banter because he did look particularly annoyed. Maybe the pressure was finally getting to him that he’d crack soon. That would give her the perfect opportunity to make the move.
“I’m sorry, Your Highness.”
Johnny pinched the bridge of his nose and let out a sigh, “No, no, it’s just the crowd tonight.”
She tilted her head to the side, “So, you’re telling me that you’re tired of being surrounded by many, many women, fawning over you?”
Another impatient sigh, “I don’t expect you to understand.”
After her second attempt, Johnny wasn’t going to banter along with her tonight, so she concluded, “Ok, truce.”
“Truce?” Johnny’s eyebrows creased in confusion when she held out her hand.
“Yeah, you know for whenever we fight. This time, no one wins,” she shrugs.
“Oh,” he shakes her hand, “sure,” he shrugs.
Johnny didn’t ignore the flicker of heat that radiated from his hand to his legs, which almost gave out. He swallowed a lump in his throat and shook her hand in agreement. Her thinned lips made her look suspicious, but he passed it as a sign of her being uncomfortable with him being upset. He’s never been that upset in front of her, all those times they argued were just him putting on a show.
She let go, sensing that maybe he was uncomfortable, and turned her attention back to the books.
Johnny cleared his throat, wanting to break the silence, “So. Tell me about your favorite genre.”
“Hmm,” she hummed in thought, “crime, mystery, thriller, drama, romance…” she turned around to meet his eye and scanned his figure, “people.”
Unbeknownst to him, there was a hint of red that hazed over his cheeks and she turned her back towards him to hide a small smile. She always had a small crush on the prince. He was the prince, who wouldn’t be head over heels for him? Aside from his arrogant pride and irritating demeanor, he was charming, charismatic, and kind to others. Sometimes she envied those who saw that side of him. He’s handsome, but he was especially handsome when he was smiling and laughing. She also envied those who made him laugh and those who were able to see that smile and hear that contagious laugh of his. Occasionally, she’ll hear it bounce off the walls and travel through the crack of her bedroom door.
“Your turn,” she whispered lowly.
“War methods, history, philosophy, and a bit of poetry,” Johnny replied.
“Oh,” she sighed, “so maybe you’re not that boring, Prince Johnny.”
Johnny chucked, “I most certainly hope I’m not boring you.”
“Of course not. Who wouldn’t want a handsome prince to follow them in a library? Alone.” She teased.
“So you think I’m handsome?” Johnny playfully suggested.
“Who doesn’t?” She paused, “I’m convinced that group of beautiful women also think so.”
“So you were watching me?”
“I think many, many people were, Johnny,” she turned to smirk at him.
“I think you have a better answer and that.”
She grabbed a book that seemed interesting and paged through it, “But what fun would that be, if I told you what you wanted to hear?” she gently shut it and continued on her journey throughout the shelves. She inhaled a sharp breath “Tell me, Johnny, what is your favorite book in this library?”
There was a slight pause that could have passed for hesitation, if not the confidence in his answer, “I can’t remember the name, but I’m hoping you’d know the title. You know, since you’re such a ‘big reader’.”
“Hit me with your best shot, Johnny.”
“Well, it’s a hardcover with red silk. The spine is dark brown, almost black, and curls perfectly down the spine. The floral designs on the cover are painted with melted pure gold. Does it ring a bell?”
She couldn’t hide the smile on her face. She was wearing a red, silk, halter dress and had let her hair loosely curl without putting it up. She wore gold earrings and bracelets that brought a golden hue to her body. The loyal prince described his worse enemy that lurked in the library.
“Not really,” she turned to fully face him, “you might have to give me more details.”
Johnny inhaled a sharp breath, finally being able to not see her bare back anymore, but see her entirely. She was beautiful, but her mouth was venomous.
“I’ve never seen you wear your hair down,” Johnny blurted.
She whispered, “that doesn’t sound like a book to me,” she said stepping close to him.
“Maybe it’s not a book,” Johnny whispered, meeting her halfway.
“What are you saying?” She played on, itching to hear what his next words were.
“Maybe it’s,” he paused, stepping so close that he backed her up against the bookshelf, “someone.”
She let out a small breath as her back hit the wooden shelves, “If you had this book, what would you do?” She whispered.
Johnny closed the space between their bodies, his pressing against hers, fitting perfectly like the last book on the shelf, “I would appreciate the build of this book and slowly open it up,” he nudged his knee between her legs and moved it against her. He breathed out a smirk when she gasped, “and gently page through the folds,” he whispered against her jaw.
Shivers traveled down her body. She’s never felt heat like this. Occasionally, the heat she got from him was anger and rage from yelling at him. This was completely different, something new. She always thought Johnny was handsome, but he was a prince. The prince that belonged to the kingdom she was supposed to bring down. She spent her entire life training for this moment. Maybe she just wanted to be selfish tonight, that won’t be so bad, right?
“Then what are you waiting for?” she asked, “kiss me like I’m your favorite thing to have in your hands.”
Johnny didn’t hesitate to kiss her. The kiss was messy and hot like they were waiting for it to be fulfilled. Like they had to wait decades to finally touch and taste each other. He groaned in her mouth. It may be venomous, but venom never tasted this good. This addicting. A quiet moan was released from her lips as he moved his knee against her. Her hands tightly gripped his shoulders, not caring if it wrinkled the material of his expensive jacket. She wanted the release, but she wanted more. She curled her fingers in his hair without a care if it wrecked the gel that held it all together. He brought her leg to curl around him, firmly pressing his hard front against her. Her escaped breaths became louder, harsher.
“Shh, we’re in the library, princess, so you better keep that venomous mouth of yours shut,” Johnny whispered, his lips grazing her’s, teasing her by backing away every time she tried to close the small gap between them.
Johnny lowered to kiss her neck, the sultry smell of jasmine and blackberries absorbed him into completely wanting her more. He couldn’t help but feel the bareness of her leg, the strong muscles that toned her legs. He’s never refrained himself for this long from touching someone else that struck every nerve in his body, never wanted to drown in someone as much as right now. Before he could take off his jacket, the boom of the library door opening echoed and it took them only a second to pull away from each other.
She looked at him with regretful eyes, eyes that he wish he turned away from in that instant. She watched the moonlight shine against his sharp features and his beautiful lips, the ones that were so warm and danceful against hers. She knew she had to stop this. Had to stop it from growing into something that she couldn't stop. They’ve already gone too far tonight, she couldn’t risk it.
“T-that was a mistake. We shouldn’t have done that,” she quickly whispered, straightening herself before running out the back door.
Johnny’s forehead creased as he watched her run, “What?”
He followed her to where she ran out the back door, but as soon as he opened it, he was only greeted by the empty hall with the eyes of his relatives staring back at him. There was no sign of her and he wasn’t sure if he was going to see her again after this.

Peering outside, the rain pattered hard against the bookstore window. A low howl shuttered throughout the tiny store, the small hum of thunder murmuring from the lightning that skimmed through the sky. You’ve spent the majority of the day lazing away; opening books that piqued your interest, only reading a little to halfway, and then setting them back on the shelf to pick another. It was an unending cycle, but one you loved on Sundays. The smell of leather books and felt paper, history, and worlds set on ink and paper. It was a great escape.
You pull yourself from the comfortable chair you molded yourself in for the past two hours and stretch the stiffness from your limbs. The dull tap of your stunted heel boots echoed through the aisle you chose to walk. Your fingers skimmed across leather and hardcover books as your eyes grazed across titles and authors, but none of them caught your eye. You hated being in a reading slump, but you always knew a good book that would bring you out of one. It was in the next aisle so it wasn’t too far. After a few steps, your eyes narrowed when you realized it wasn't sitting in its rightful place.
It’s always here…your lips pursed.
You doubled check the nearby books in case it was misplaced or the new employee accidentally put them in its wrongful spot…but nothing. You hummed, clearly displeased because now you have to actually search for a book that interested you.
Suddenly, a low voice speaks from behind you, “I believe you’re looking for this.”
You turn to see a tall, handsome male smiling down at you, dimples piercing through soft cheeks. Hair sat delicately on his head, fluffy like he didn’t bother to comb it and only used his fingers to do so. In his hand, he holds a book…the book you were looking for.
“Y-you–how did you know?” You stuttered in shock.
The handsome man smirked back at you with a shrug, “Lucky guess,” a hint of curiosity hid in his response.
For some reason, you felt like it was more than that but you didn’t question it because he was incredibly handsome and he held the book you were looking for. He slightly nudged it towards you and with a smile, you grabbed it from him. His smirk became a knowing smile, the familiarity curling in the corners of his lips.
“Thank you,” you peered up to him again, the softness in his eyes melting you.
Seconds passed by without him responding, he only seemed to be looking at you so you rose an eyebrow, “Is there something else I can help you with?”
His smile only grew, a tiny chuckle escaping his lips, “No, I just wanted to–um, never mind, I’m okay. Thank you, have a nice day,” he said turning to leave.
It’s pouring out and he doesn’t look like he has an umbrella or anything to protect him in that matter. Before he made it out the door, you asked him, “Wait–” he turned, his eyes widened, “Do I know you?”
The handsome man closed his eyes, those dimples appearing again as he shook his head, “No," he answered to you walking out, “not yet, but you will,” he whispered to himself, rain soaking his entire being.
Little did you know, it was Jaehyun, your lover all along, turning back time to see your smile just once more.

Spring’s night breeze shakes the tent as you attempt to sleep. It’s late, it’s cold, and you can’t sleep because Jaehyun keeps tossing and turning next to you. You had your back to him, but you knew he was still awake. He’d do this to annoy you–the tossing and turning–it was a way to make noise to prevent you from sleeping. It’s like he somehow knew you were a light sleeper.
It was the last night of the spring retreat your student organization took the students on. Normally, you don’t go because you don’t do well in settings outside of your bed, but you figured it was your last semester, so why not go? Big mistake. The president of the student organization forced you and Jaehyun to be partners for everything; tug-a-war, the obstacle course, capture the flag, you name it. He knew you two hated each other and was convinced that close proximity–even sleeping in the same tent–will help mend whatever tension was between you two. To be honest, you didn’t know why Jaehyun was always bickering with you, but every time an argument would happen, you’d make sure you’d win whatever you two were fighting about. You were competitive as him and it irked you that he always got things his way without even trying.
You cranked your neck towards him, “Will you stop moving around? I’m trying to sleep,” you snapped at him.
“Well I would,” Jaehyun huffed, “if I had some FUCKING blankets here!” He said loudly.
You turned to cover his mouth, everyone was supposed to be sleeping and the last thing you needed was a lecture from your uptight president who only slept a tent away.
“Shut the fuck up, you’re going to wake up everyone!” You pushed your hand against his mouth, Jaehyun struggled but you held his shoulder down to prevent him from moving.
A sharp pain ripples through your palm and you force your hand away, “Did you just bite me?” You shouted, you didn’t even care who heard you at this point.
“Don’t you ever shut the fuck up? All I hear is you talking about how you’re going to beat me in this and that, but I don’t see you ever winning against me! You know what they say, ‘Second place is first place loser’,” Jaehyun taunts.
You reach for his hair, remembering Soyoung running her fingers through it earlier and him smiling like it was his only pride and joy.
“Because you’re annoying and you always have to be number one and you’re always finding ways to argue with me! UGH, you’re so fucking annoying!!!” You curled your fingers in his hair pulling him back and forth with his head shaking to the rhythm of your pulling.
Jaehyun grunts, grasping your wrists, “Will you please stop pulling my hair?”
You suddenly climb on top of him, your legs straddling him as you continue thrashing his head back and forth, “I thought you liked it? Liked girls touching, running their fingers through your hair,” you grunt as he tries to pry away, “What–you don’t like it now? Huh? Huh? How do you like this, motherfucker?”
“Why,” Jaehyun grunts, “do you,” he groans, “always fight me?” his voice is strained.
“Because I-”
“HEY! SOME OF US ARE TRYING TO SLEEP–IF YOU’RE GONNA FUCK, DO IT IN THE BATHROOM!!!” A familiar voice yelled through the interrupted night–the president, Doyoung.
“THE ONLY THING I’M FUCKING IS STUPID IF YOU THINK I’M GOING TO HOOK UP WITH THIS PIECE OF SHIT!!” You yell back to your president, who cared if it was disrespectful? Jaehyun had ruined your night and maybe even the retreat.
Taking the opportunity, Jaehyun lunges forward to grab ahold of your shoulders and you soon find yourself snuggled upon his warm chest.
“That seemed to shut you up,” Jaehyun whispers, a loose chuckle leaving his lips.
You attempt to push yourself away from him, but he wraps his arms tighter around your shoulders gluing you down. You grunt as you struggle to get out of his hold but it’s no use. You can hear Jaehyun chuckling above you, his laughter sprinkled with mischief.
“Don’t move, I’m warm now,” Jaehyun says. The vibration of his voice makes your stomach curl.
You press your lips together, debating if you should attempt to pry yourself from him, but he’s so warm and you’re so tired. Those seemed to be the only things holding you down from ensuing another fight.
A few minutes later, you whisper faintly, “Why is your heart beating so fast?”
Jaehyun peers down at you, you don’t seem to be fighting back so he replies, “Because I was cold as shit since you kept hogging the blankets.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah, ‘oh’,” Jaehyun tugs you tighter against him, “now hush and go to sleep,” he pulls the blankets on top of you, making sure it covers your entire body from the cold.
It certainly didn’t take long for you to fall into slumber. With Jaehyun’s body heat encompassing you, you found your eyes slowly, but surely, getting heavier with each blink. And while you were busy falling asleep, Jaehyun kept his eyes on you with a gentle smile stretched across his lips.

A sharp pain ripples through your palm and you force your hand away, “Did you just bite me?” You shouted, you didn’t even care who heard you at this point.

update: am i coming back??
lol hi yall—i know it’s been awhile and my hiatus took way longer than expected buttttt i think i’ll be coming back for a bit bc i have january off for winter break. fall semester was crazy in ways where life really decided to put me on a rollercoaster and said, “here ya go, enjoy the ride! btw, the seatbelt is broken!”
so as if rn, i’m still debating if i want to continue the latest series. i have the next part written, but it’s been so long that idk if i just wanna scrap it and start over with something completely new or not. i want to take smaller steps and write little drabbles here and there as i begin working up the courage to jump onto something that requires a lot of dedication again. so ig that’ll be the plan as of rn??
anyways, i missed everyone, i missed writing, and thank you for being patient with me. i’m excited to be back!!
