Van Helsing vs. Mina on Transparency and Sharing Information

You know, Jack Steward's diary, Jonathan Harker's journal, and Mina Murray's diary were all at first in formats that were inaccessible to a wider audience (phonograph recordings making it impossible to find specific dates and shorthand that is illegible unless you know shorthand).

All of the most important information regarding Dracula and how he arrived in England, when he arrived, and how he preyed on Lucy was all there waiting to be discovered but because of how the information was recorded, it's practically useless.

But then Mina comes along and transcribes everything, and suddenly all that previously inaccessible information is there for the reading pleasure of everyone with a bone to pick with Dracula.

The knowledge about Dracula and his movements did not "gather its kind around it and breed" as Van Helsing said his knowledge would when it was still kept in the phonograph recordings and in shorthand. It was only when it was made accessible and shared that a deeper understanding of the threat they would face formed along with the key to defeating him.

Jonathan's knowledge about Dracula's cargo did not grow into corn until he learned what he experienced was real. Jack's knowledge of Renfield's movements did not grow into corn until Mina pointed out its connection with Dracula. Van Helsing's knowledge about vampires didn't grow into corn until he learned who specifically they were dealing with and learned what the Harkers already knew.

So you shall keep knowledge in its place, where it may rest—where it may gather its kind around it and breed. You and I shall keep as yet what we know here, and here." He touched me on the heart and on the forehead, and then touched himself the same way.

Bullshit. This does not spark joy.

We need have no secrets amongst us; working together and with absolute trust, we can surely be stronger than if some of us were in the dark.

This does spark joy. Because Mina's right. Knowledge is meant to be shared.

Van Helsing and Mina are foils with conflicting philosophies on how and when information is meant to be shared, and if it is to be shared at all. Van Helsing prefers to play with his cards as close to his chest as possible. Mina prefers to share information and keep extensive records for easy reviewing and make sure everyone is on the same page.
