So often, when you sit down to talk with your group about what they're interested in playing (what kinds of stories and themes they want to explore, characters they want to play, mechanics they want to engage with), it quickly becomes obvious that D&D is not giving you what you want. Or not EVERYTHING you want. How could it? Here's the thing. No one wants to watch 50 Westerns in row. No one wants to eat pizza every night for a year. People burn out on superhero movies after a decade of the MCU. That doesn't make those things bad. But as humans we want more. More options. More experiences. D&D is good at what its good at, but if you want to experience other things there are hundreds of games to try that do very different things. There are hundreds of games to try that will give you experiences unlike anything that D&D can. Not because they're better (although I think many are), but because different games SHOULD focus on different things. Talk to your game group, and listen to them when they tell you what they want. And tell them what you want, and see if they listen to you. And then look around at the hundreds (thousands?) of amazing games out there and see if any of them fit what you're interested in. Chances are, you'll find a few that do. And a bunch more that don't, but sound interesting. That scratch an itch that you didn't know you had. That open a door beyond the limitations of the one game you've been playing for years. Will you come back to D&D?Ssure. Everyone loves a Western and pizza, every now and then. Some people will find that's even their favorite. But we say "Variety is the spice of life" for a reason. And if nothing else, trying a new game might make you appreciate what D&D does well even more!
I've briefly touched upon this topic before but here goes; I know you can play D&D for pretty much free because it's extremely easy to pirate, but I think we've settled by now that piracy doesn't actually hurt companies as much as they want us to think, meaning that pirating D&D isn't as big of a "stick it to WotC" move as it's often presented as. Of course if you absolutely have to play D&D (but, like, why?) you won't get any moralizing from me about piracy, like, ever.
But the point is: supporting another game either monetarily or with your valuable time is a much more direct and tangible way to stick it to the cultural monopoly of D&D than playing D&D and not paying WotC. I mean if it's another big-ish publisher I don't have a lot of faith in their working conditions being much better than WotC's, but in some cases it probably is so. As it often happens, the market leader can often afford to pay its employees worse simply due to those positions being more desirable.
But anyway who cares, there's lots of games out there where you can actually get a full game sometimes for less than the cost of a single D&D book and since those games are often built as more focused experiences than the D&D "forever game" formula you're actually more likely to get to experience all of the game instead of a lot of the content existing just as shadows on the cave wall.

We've been working hard to finish up the new Yeld: 2nd Edition book. Right now we're in the middle of layout and proof reading. These pages are still a work in progress, but they give you a good idea of what the new book will look like. Find out more at YeldStuff.com

Monsters for the new Yeld: 2nd Edition book! These are unedited, so there are a few mistakes. But I think the new layout we're using will make them easier to use, and easier to clip and share with players in your games! YeldStuff.com Yeld 2nd Edition Kickstarter Yeld Patreon

Can we not just say "This is the animal I like"? Isn't that enough? do we have to have a codeword for it?
Spirit Animal is racist.
Patronus was invented by a transphobe.
I think it’s time we all suck it up and say what we mean: fursona.

The Magical Land of Yeld
https://yeldstuff.itch.io/the-magical-land-of-yeld
The Magical Land of Yeld is a game where you play as a group of kids who get trapped on the other side of a magic door in a fantasy world ruled by the Evil Vampire Prince Dragul! In it you gain heroic powers, fight monsters, help people, and try to get the magic keys from Dragul’s minions, the Hunters of Yeld, in order to return home- but when you turn 13 in Yeld, you turn into a monster yourself, meaning you can’t go home unless you defeat Dragul!
Inspired by cartoons and video games, Yeld is full of humor and peppered with darkness- and a brand new edition of it just got funded on kickstarter and will be releasing later this year!
(Mod note: seen this game before! it looked v cute)
