What are you writing this week✍🏽?⁠ -⁠ Sometimes I feel overwhelmed by the lack of existence or erasure of groups like people of color and queer relationships between women, or lgbtq+ relationships that aren't just White men in the fanfiction📚 that I consume.⁠ -⁠ I love the fandoms that I read. I love the friendships and the ships that live in these spaces. However, sometimes when I want to read fics like fluffy teeth rotting ones that happen to involve a person of color, it's like searching for a needle in a haystack if they haven't already been pushed to the margins or vanished from the fandom altogether. ⁠ -⁠ Not to say that there aren't writers telling amazing stories with POCs, with WLW, with disabilities, etc. It's just the constant reminder that there's still work to be done and that talking about these things presents windows of opportunities for us to see the gaps that we can help fill. ⁠ -⁠ I love fanfiction, and I always will, but since I was a kid, I've held on to this fear that I'm not good enough to tell these stories or get the voices right. But what has fear given me? Nothing. As I've said before, this fear of writing serves no one. I'm tired of not existing, I'm tired of being erased, I'm tired of the single narrative. So, what do I do about it?⁠ -⁠ I'm challenging myself to write at least one 100 to 500 word (or more) story every other week in the fandoms I love. What positive or negative stereotypes have you encountered in fiction? - Writing stories✍🏾✍🏻 ✍🏿that engage in inclusive and diverse representation doesn't have to be terrifying, ignored, or executed poorly. These are just a few examples on how we as writers can work to reshape the way we try to capture and share the intricate lives of our fellow humans. - Beyond the examples and suggestions in this post, I recommend reading beyond fiction, beyond only stereotypes, and even beyond your own writing. What social constructs do you wrestle with🤼?⁠ -⁠ This is a snippet from a piece I wrote last year, called Genesis 9:13-16. In this poem, the speaker struggles with everything society, their family👪 and friends👩🏽‍🦰, and strangers🙍🏼 🙍‍♂️have told them they can't be because who they are goes up against the rules of social convention. So, the speaker must grapple with what's more important to them, living within the boundaries of their socially accepted role or being happy🤔😬😄.⁠ -⁠ I love exploring how socially constructed ideas help and or hinder us. What are some of your favorite writing starter kit tips🧰?⁠ -⁠ When I was a teenager I found the idea of revising poetry overwhelming😨 because I was so afraid I was going to overthink it and ruin bits that seemed even remotely good or make a crappy piece worse.⁠ -⁠ However, the thing I had to learn is that my issue wasn't really with making revisions, but with my belief in my ability to write something of value🤔. I had this intense imposter syndrome whenever my professor referred to me as a poet because I didn't feel like I deserved the honor of that title compared to my classmates who had been writing poetry for years or decades✍🏾.⁠ -⁠ I think we can get caught up in the mechanics of writing, in building that toolbox of practical knowledge.
