the original star wars trilogy is luke’s coming of age story and contrary to popular belief, is not a stereotypical power fantasy at all. a huge overarching theme for luke in the OG trilogy is actually about being selfless and surrendering notions of power to something or someone greater.

what are luke’s big moments in each movie of the trilogy, exactly? in a new hope, he lets go of his ego and trusts in the force to blow up the death star. in empire, it’s luke rashly deciding to face vader and receiving dire consequences for it. in jedi, it’s luke willingly sacrificing himself rather than fight his father.

this is why it’s a natural progression to have us see luke as a skilled hero after the events of rotj- literally because he went through his hero’s journey trials to get to this very point. it’s actually quite meaningful and not superfluous to see this! if they overuse his character now that would be one thing, but showing luke like this was something that the new canon was really missing and it’s satisfying
