really intrigued abt what exactly you mean about the relationship between racialization and media portrayals of cannibalism!

just that cannibalism has historically been both a trait attributed to racialised people and a means through which that racialisation is articulated, ie, the idea of the refined thin white european vs the savage appetitive african/indigenous person. this is such an old and established idea that even michel de montaigne in 1580 was subverting it to some extent by making what we would now identify as a cultural relativist argument about the practice of cannibalism in brazil lol. tbc racialisation is not a process that occurs primarily via media portrayals because it's driven by material/economic interests, and tv like yellowjackets is more reflective of an audience's preexisting ideas about race and 'savagery' than it is constitutive of those ideas. but it is still annoying and boring to me to see portrayals of cannibalism in the 21st century that are still invoking it as essentially a signifier of savagery, ferality, and loss of civilisation, without interrogating those discourses in any way or saying anything about them that like, a french ethnologist in 1801 didn't already come up with. and in the case of yellowjackets in particular, like i said, the show clearly IS relying on the idea of cannibalism as 'savagery' and the racialised meaning of that idea where taissa is concerned, yet the writers aren't willing to confront this head-on or really go anywhere with it.

Hi I got suspended from work for more than a week for like the smallest notion of being willing to talk to my coworkers about the general idea that the usa will not last forever. But I think I was kinda spiteful in the HR talk about it, cried a little. Idk. I hate working at grocery stores anyway. I don't know what to do. I may or may not be fired, they haven't told me. Running out of food money, haven't been able to put away savings in quite some time so we've had to dip into those. We had a little from me working thru winter and spring but those months were hell. Idk. Anything helps.

Our house is on fire

Her arms are burned, her hair is singed, but she is ok. Edelweiss is singed all over but fine, Loiosh is fine, and I cant find Impurrator Furryosa. She wasn't in the area where the fire was, but who knows what happened after the trucks arrived?

All our stuff is gone. I don't know when we can get inside to look for things and to see how bad the damage is. Its a lot.

I am in shock and shaking. Cipher has been taken to the hospital, I could not go with her.

At first, we thought, and hoped, it would be a quick fix for a technician. However, three days later, upon calling one in, he gave us the bad news: despite recently having been filled, the oil tank is not delivering any oil to our heater, most likely due to a blockage in the pipes. Because the pipes and the tank are buried underground, it's simply not feasible to repair this. Instead, we are hoping to be able to get a new tank installed in our basement. The repair guy estimated about $3000 to do this... money we simply don't have.

The last year or so has been... incredibly difficult for my family. At the end of last year, my mother was fired due to cutbacks as a result of COVID. At the end of May, we were evicted from our apartment. We spent two months living out of a hotel, waiting on obfuscated bureaucratic processes to be able to get somewhere else to live, and draining our reserve funds in the process. We finally managed to move in in August, and at the end of September we moved my grandmother into the house with us. Unbeknownst to us at the time, while we hadn't been able to see her due to COVID, she had developed significant dementia symptoms, which we had previously not known she had, and now has to be cared for on a regular basis.

Barely more than a week after we moved my grandmother in, my father died unexpectedly. He was the only person who still had a significant job. We still had an income, my grandmother and mother's social security checks, but it's only barely been enough to get by. We simply don't have a spare $3000. The house is fairly well insulated, so we can use our space heater to keep the house from going below freezing... but it's not a feasible way to live. My grandmother is incapable of processing that she needs to keep herself warm, at least for long, and it's not safe for her to live in.

It's only December. We have months of below freezing temperatures, especially at night, ahead of us... we need to be able to fix this situation ASAP. The goal is an estimate, and if we get a more specific price it will be changed reflect that. Thank you so much for even just reading this, and have a happy new year. Please help my girlfriend with rent

Hi everyone,

my UK girlfriend has been struggling with finding work as a teacher due to corona for a long period of time now. In October we managed to secure partial benefits. Sadly her landlord won’t provide the required info for her to also receive aid for housing costs. She managed to secure a job as well, but after trouble obtaining the required certificates due to her being trans we put in an accelerated request for a passport which would also suffice for the job. We’ve managed to obtain her passport now with some delays (delivery at the wrong address, etc…) over the holidays and she can start work now. Rent payment of 475 pounds is upcoming though by the end of the week, and any further help with it would be really appreciate, if we can bridge this rent payment things should become stable.
