An Ordinary Yuri Manga
The Girl I Want is So Handsome! **SPOILER IMAGE **
Story and Art by: Yuama
Tumblr media
I finally got to read this Manga! I wanted to check it out based on the cover alone, and although I did not regret going into it blind, I was surprised by what I found.
I was surprised to find out author Yuama, is the same creator as "The Summer You Were There", a Manga I'm invested in and impressed with. Unfortunately, I can't say the same with this title.
Tumblr media
There is nothing terrible about this manga. I think the characters are cute, and the romantic dynamic is entertaining, but the main contention is the story itself. For a publication, I would have just hoped the story to be more compelling than what was presented.
The story is about ditzy and geeky Hina falling for basketball beauty Shiki at first sight. Hina tries to confess her feelings but is misunderstood by Shiki, and somehow becomes the Basketball Manager. Hina uses this opportunity to get closer to her while struggling to get her feelings across.
Like I said before, nothing wrong with this story or characters, I do think the approach to making this a short and episodic manga difficult to justify purchasing.
Tumblr media
Also, does this panel not give you Kase San vibes?
Looking at the author's current project, "The Summer You Where There," it's possible creating "The Girl I Want is So Handsome!" was an escape from the intensity of the former title. In that regard, I understand the need to want to switch things up. It's a blessing if an Artist gets to work on more than one Manga so it's understandable that not all of their works are large productions.
Anyways, I do think it's worth a read. The comedy is great, the art and characters are cute, and I had a good time.

History of Shojo Beat
Tumblr media
Shojo Beat Magazine was the gateway to manga and the Shojo manga genre for many teenage girls, and I am no exception. I was always excited about a trip to the grocery store because it meant I would pick up the latest issue of Shojo Beat. Crimson Hero, Nana, and Absolute Boyfriend were some of my favorite stories. Each issue was filled with the latest (US Market) chapters from six manga series, articles about anime recommendations, and insight into Japanese culture. A treat for many who starved for Anime and Manga in the 2000s.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shojo Beat was a North American magazine published by Viz Media as a sister company to Shonen Jump. Introduced in 2005, Shojo Beat targeted Teenage women as opposed to Shonen Jump's male-centric series. The magazine was received positively with its first issue circulating 20,000 copies and 38,000 copies by 2007. So what happened? Why did it end in 2009?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are a few speculations, but there is not a definitive answer to the cancellation in 2009. Viz Media stated the discontinuation was due to "the difficult economic climate" (whatever that means). I suspect this is jargon for the magazine not bringing in numbers. Still, it came as a shock to many fans and industry professionals. Feeling the loss of Shojo Beat would leave its female fanbase without a magazine of their own.
But the name of Shojo Beat isn't completely dead. Viz Media currently is using the Shojo Beat imprint and branding for its Shojo manga and anime titles. Meaning, that any new shojo genre series that is released, as well as re-release, will have the Shojo Beat emblem on it. Which is nice.
Where you an avid reader of this magazine? What was your favorite series?

Chainsaw Man is Back and Bloodier Than Ever!
*Spoilers ahead!
Tumblr media
Part 2 of Chainsaw man dropped on July 12th. And chapter 99 was as bat-shit crazy as I'd imagine. It's a pretty great introduction to the perspective of ordinary high school students. In Part 1 of the series, the story is strictly focused on Denji and the Devil Hunter Agency. Civilians were literally used as Devil fodder, collateral, or killed for sport. At least for this chapter, the lives of a high school classroom are seen and, everything seems normal, but things go wrong fast.
Mikata is a loner. She finds something wrong with everyone and everything. It's revealed her parents were killed by a Devil, which is probably the cause of her negativity. She is further annoyed that her teacher assigned the class a pet Devil Chicken, Bucky. Their assignment is to take care of him for a period of time before having to kill him. "As a lesson about life".
Tumblr media
The time to kill Bucky arrived. But instead, the class agreed that Bucky is now a friend and should be kept alive.
Slowly, Mikata is taken out of her shell with the help of the class president and Bucky. She realizes that she no longer wants to be alone. So just as she is about to play with Bucky and her classmates, Mikata trips and falls. KIlling Bucky. This is where that dark humor comes in because the situation is so sad you have no choice but to laugh.
The class is upset with Mikata. Mikata herself is overcome with grief. Her teacher and Class President reach out to her to visit Bucky's grave. And this is where shit hits the fan. The Class President reveals she tripped Mikata so she would kill Bucky, that the teacher encouraged the President to befriend Mikata, and that she has a sexual relationship with their teacher (Barf). The President's jealousy towards the teacher's interest in Mikata has turned her into a devil. And thus kills Mikata on the spot.
Tumblr media
As Mikata lies dying, she is transformed into the Devil of War. She swiftly takes her revenge by using the teacher's spinal cord as a weapon on the president. Killing them both.
Tumblr media
The Devil of War is now on a mission to kill Chainsaw Man. And with that, the chapter ends. It doesn't introduce Denji yet. Though bits in pieces of the chapter infer that Chainsaw Man is somewhat of a celebrity Devil hunter. As he has his own snack.
Anyway, that was a wild read. And I am wondering what crazy stuff happens next. What do you guys think of this chapter? Let me know in the comments!

I can't man. I just read on my local news feed that there is a one wheeled bandit prowling neighborhoods and commiting theifs.
A burglar, with his mode of transportation as a FUCKING one wheeled board. It's horrible it's happening to people but also so so stupid in the burglars part.
How much of a loser do you need to be.Sorry just had to share, lol.

Titles I want to read based on their cover
The saying is true, that you can't judge a book by its cover. The same can't be said for the writers and artists creating the books, however. The cover definitely matters!
Here are some of the titles I will probably pick up based on their covers. Some I have a vague idea about the story and others I know nothing about.
Ran and the Grey World -  Aki Irie
Tumblr media
For this one, I know pretty much nothing about it. All I know is that this cover looks gorgeous. Not a good reason to read but sometimes it pays off. Look at it!
Tumblr media
Crown of Thorns - Yoko Kamio
Tumblr media
Another one I know nothing about, but it's a comedy-romance, and I love that combo. I'm also a sucker for very pretty girls, so that's another reason. Also, why is it so hard to find a decent resolution jpeg of these covers? My God.
At Night I Become a Monster - Yoru Sumino
Tumblr media
I found out that this book is a novel, but either way, I'm still interested. That cover is too intriguing! Is this a horror? A psychological mystery? A character study? How could I not want to find out?!
Tumblr media
Skip and Loafer - Misaki Takamatsu
Tumblr media
This manga series is pretty popular among shojo fans, so it was inevitable I would hear about it too. What I know so far is that it's a romance between a popular boy and a quirky girl. I'm a sucker for opposites-attract couples, so I have a feeling this will satisfy that itch. Plus, the artwork looks so cute and sweet.
Tumblr media
The Girl I want is So Handsome - Yuama
Tumblr media
Another series I know nothing about. But It's a guarantee I will read this manga. I love Yuri, and can't get enough of it. So to have another yuri title under my belt would be a pleasure. Everything you need to know is right on the title, simple.

Top 10 Yuri Manga/Manhwa
The Yuri Genre has come a long way. From gimmicks such as the protagonist being a male and transforming into a girl, subsequently having a stupid romance, to the classic incest trope (though that's still a thing), and, of course, steamy-filled smut with the little plot (though if done right, smut is good ;) ).
Anyways, this list is my favorite Yuri Manga and Manhwa, in no particular order!
Hello Melancholic! - Yayoi Ohsawa
Tumblr media
I'm so happy this finally got serialized and published through Seven seas. I originally read this manga on a sketchy site, but now everyone has the opportunity to read this beauty. The way this story depicts the main characters' slow romance is so sweet and tender. God, I love it.
Minato is a tall and awkward high school girl. She doesn't like to stand out, but she has a great talent for the Trombone. She is scouted by the charismatic upperclassman, Hibiki, to join their hodge-podge of a music club. Minato struggles to join a band again after her past, but the ever-persistent Hibiki is not taking no for an answer.
Hana & Hina After School - Milk Morinaga
Tumblr media
This manga is another slow burn. You'll realize quickly that it's my weakness. I like what I like, what can I say? I enjoyed the series approach to introducing our leading ladies. They start out as strangers with nothing in common. Even their first impressions of each other aren't so great. But as each page turns, It doesn't take long to understand why they make a great couple.
Their school doesn't allow part-time work, but Hina and Hana secretly work at a cute shop. Hanna is a petite girl who loves fashion and Hina is tall and intense; with a love for cute things. They initially don't get along and misunderstand each other. But as they open up they learn they really enjoy their time together.
That Time I Was Blackmailed By the Class’s Green Tea Bitch -
Xian Jun
Tumblr media
This is a Manhwa, and aside from the weird name title, it's an adorable read. I looked up the meaning of "Green Tea Bitch", and it's a stereotype. It refers to a woman that appears to be innocent but is actually calculating and deceiving.
The only thing deceiving here is the title. Rest assured, these characters are a goofy and loving pairing. The series is still ongoing, and I'm dying to know the ending!
The story is about Lin Luxi, a closeted gay, who yearns for romance. She spends most of her days studying and keeping to herself. But a misunderstanding forms an odd friendship with the misunderstood Tong Tong. The two become friends but quickly grow feelings for each other.
Bloom Into You - Nakatani Nio
Tumblr media
Out of all the series on this list, this is my favorite. It's confident in its themes and the story it wants to tell. It doesn't stray from the plot, yet expands on each character's motivations and growth.
Media often disillusion young girls about romance, and because of that, it's difficult to understand what love is. I think it's an important topic for young girls.
Yuu has never fallen in love. She loves how romance is depicted in shojo manga and imagines that her first love will feel like that. But when an old classmate confesses to her, she feels nothing. On the other hand, class president Nanami falls in love with Yuu at first sight. Yuu wants to fall in love, so she tries to understand her.
Doughnuts Under a Crescent Moon - Shio Usui
Tumblr media
I've talked about this manga before, so I won't say much. I'll summarize by saying I appreciate that this is a romance between two adults. Don't get me wrong, I take what I get when it comes to Yuri, but sometimes, I'd like to read about characters close to my age.
Hinako's and Asahi's slow realization of their feelings toward each other is natural and sweet.
Monologue Woven For You - Syu Yasaka
Tumblr media
This Manga series is also still ongoing. It stands out with the fully colored pages, alone. However, the story is also intriguing with lovable characters. It's early in the plot but I'm already invested and curious about the little mysteries scattered around.
Haruka abandoned her dream of theatre, but she is brought back when she meets Nao in college. Nao is a passionate theatre major determined to perform on stage. Supporting her new friend, she can see how talented Nao is and reminds Haruka that she still loves theater. Will she return to being an actress?
The Summer You Were There - Yuama
Tumblr media
Another ongoing series, sadly. But the great thing about this list is most of these are either already completed or serilized with plans to publish. I enjoy this manga in particular because I relate to Shizuku. She struggles with the image of her past self, shaping her as a timid and shameful person, filled with guilt. It's a heavy and complicated series of emotions I believe the author depicts well.
Shizuku likes to keep to herself. She spends her time writing her novel, which she intends never to show. But her bubbly classmate, Kaori, changes everything when she discovers Shizukus's manuscript and suggests they date as material for her next book!
VOLUMES
Blooming Sequence - Lee Eul
Tumblr media
Another Manhwa, another gem. I love this series because it depicts a new relationship, so well. The awkwardness, learning about your partner's habits and understanding the importance of communication and honesty. Relationships can be fun, especially in the beginning, but sooner or later things get serious. You'll eventually open up, be vulnerable, and tackle problems together. I just think this series tells a "first serious" relationship in a genuine way.
Sewoo is a junior in college. She is the president of the film club. Hayoung is a freshman who has just joined the club. The two quickly become friends and feel comfortable with each other. But Sewoo finds herself falling in love for the first time.
Girlfriends - Milk Morinaga
Tumblr media
This is a classic, in my opinion. It's not perfect, definitely a bit dated, but I still enjoy this series. It's a simple tale of friends to lovers that I think most will enjoy.
Mariko is an honest and studious high school student. Ako is a popular and fashionable classmate who wants to become friends with Mari. They become friends through make-up, and fashion, transforming Mari from plain to chic. Their time spent together brings deeper feelings toward each other, and they fear it may destroy their friendship.
There is much more Manga that I wanted to include, but then this post would be too long. I hope you enjoyed this read, I meant to post this yesterday. So, sorry about that. Take care, and let me know if you know of these mangas or some of your own favorites.

Dr. Stone: Civilization Made Fun
Tumblr media
I always wanted to read Dr. Stone. But just never found the time. Now, four years since its publication in 2017, I'm finally starting the series. And I've been blowing right through it!
I'm currently on chapter 55 out of 223, which isn't too bad if you are an avid manga reader. Thank God for digital subscriptions, otherwise, I could never afford to read all of these stories.
Anyways, I'm having a great time with this manga, there is so much to love so far, and I will explain why.
Tumblr media
Riichiro Inagaki really hit the park with the concept and creating longevity in his story. The manga is about Senku, a high schooler obsessed with science. So when humanity is mysteriously petrified for 3,700 years, Senku emerges as humanity's only hope to rebuild civilization.
From creating antibiotics to sustainable energy, there are so many opportunities to showcase the feats mankind has made, through science. I'm just impressed that this concept was somehow adapted perfectly to fit within the shonen genre.
Tumblr media
Another notable point for Dr. Stone is it's gorgeous artwork. Boichi is the Artist for the series, and his work is absolutely stunning. I looked into his work and biography out of curiosity. It's interesting to note he'a a Korean artist who used to work on Maneha, but now lives in Japan as a Manga Artist.
I need to make some time check out his past works, not only is it just as beautiful, but highly praised and award winning.
Tumblr media
So those are some of the reasons why I enjoy this Manga. I'm sure there will be more to praise as the series continues. Of course no manga is perfect, but the pros outweigh the cons.

The Increasingly Dark Vibes of Witch Hat Atelier (includes spoilers)
Tumblr media
What started out as an innocent perspective of a little girl, excited to learn magic, turns into a commentary about the societal divide between magicians and humans. Coco is now aware of the reality of how their world works, and it isn't fair.
*Spoiler from here on out!
The series had many tense moments. From Coco's guilt about petrifying her mother (possibly killing her) to the earth-shattering knowledge that everyone is capable of casting spells, the manga has had its share of dark moments. But volumes 8 and 9 have cranked up the seriousness to 100.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Every moral dilemma throughout the series has led to Volumes 8 and 9. The consequences of concealing knowledge from humans get a close and personal look.
Custas makes a return in vol 8. After the mudslide incident in vol 2, his injuries sustained render him unable to ever walk. It's against the law to teach humans about magic, and it's illegal to cast dark magic to heal. This gives Tartah and Coco the idea to create a magical tool for Custas to wear.
Although their creation was a success, and Custas can fly and glide wherever he wants, his happiness didn't last long. Bandits attack but he is saved by a mysterious witch that shares the truth about magic and provides him with new legs.
With this new knowledge, he is understandably upset. I honestly can not blame Custas for his change in character and resentment towards witches.
If there was a way to solve a problem but someone gatekeeps the answer, wouldn't you be angry? Wouldn't you want to take charge? The author masterfully weaves both a whimsical tale that transports you into a magical world and introduced thought-provoking content for readers to ponder about.
Anyways I hope there is a happy-ish ending to this arc or the Delima about magic is solved. Because that's messed up. I feel for Custas, and I feel for the helpless Coco and Tartah.

Chainsaw Man Part 1 Re-Review (Spoiler Free)
Tumblr media
Well, here I am. I keep my word. Though this isn't a complete withdrawal from my previous review about Chainsaw Man, I did find myself reading every available chapter, so clearly, there is something there. And to my surprise, this is only part one! The second part will premiere on July 13th.
A huge component in my decision to continue reading this series is time and desensitization. I feel if I wasn't writing this blog I wouldn't have continued reading this Manga. Because typically, as I mentioned before, gore and antagonistic characters are not my things. But with time, I was able to look past the blood and guts and found something worth reading.
Brief Synopsis:
After his father commits suicide, Denji is left with an enormous debt. So, with the help of his devil Pochita, Denji kills Devils to pay back the Yakuza. Unfortunately, in a turn of events, the Yakuza double-cross Denji and kill him and Pochita. But this isn't the end. Pochita sacrifices his heart to revive Denji. Making him a half Devil, Chainsaw Man.
Immediately, he is seized by the mysterious Makima, Offering (more like forcing) Deji to join and work within the Devil Hunter Program. Where his Devil powers will be utilized to kill dangerous Devils in Japan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The heart of the series is the relationships Denji develops with his roommates Aki and Power. Denji's only motivation is to "have three square meals a day, and a place to sleep". But it becomes clearer as the series continues that this isn't the case. Through meeting various characters, I think it begins to click with Denji that there is more to life than, the life essentials.
The series often states that the less sane you are, the more likely "Devil Hunters" will survive. And with that, I began to understand Denji a bit more and started to feel sorry for him. Especially, as the story unfolds.
Tumblr media
For someone like Denji, who has never processed his feelings of loss, horrible upbringing, and the difficulties of being a Devil Hunter; relinquishing his agency is the easiest option for him. Because any other feeling other than hunger, lust, or anger, is too complicated. I find that profoundly sad.
With part 2 slated to release soon. I hope to see Denji regain his agency. His story is not over, so anything is possible in terms of growth, which will be interesting to read.
SO in conclusion....I enjoyed my time with Chainsaw Man, it took time but I got there.

Current Reads June
Hard-Boiled Cop and Dolphin: Ryuhei Tamura
Publishing Date: June 2020-June 2021
Tumblr media
I was bummed to find out that Hard-Boiled Cop and Dolphin was canceled, and the fifth and final volume will release in October. No matter how I feel about a Manga series, creating comics is tough. And it must be hard for a Mangaka to put their series to rest when it hasn't been entirely told.
I'm still starting off with this series, but there are 47 chapters total. So I'll enjoy it while I can, and there is A LOT to enjoy.
Boyle Samejima is a reckless, tough cop, who is willing to do anything to catch his perp. However, his antics get him removed from the Tokyo Police district and into a small police squad on an island.
Nothing is normal about this island though. The police force is currently providing protection for a little girl from a cult that reveres her as an oracle. Oh, and her adopted father is a humanoid Dolphin, who is also a part of the police force.
It's a hilarious and wacky ride right from the jump, There is so much to discover, from the little girl's mysterious powers to the oddities that occur on the island, and the banter between Dolphin Cop and Samejima. As I mentioned before, I'm still early in the series but I'm thoroughly enjoying the humor of this manga. And it's a shame the story has ended.
Chainsaw Man: Tatsuki Fujimoto
Publishing Date: 2018-2020
Tumblr media
I can see why people like this Manga. Especially those inclined to edgier things. Some themes include gore, action, and the fact that the protagonist has an excellent design with chainsaws attached to his freaking head and arms.
There are things I like about it, but I can't say it's my cup of tea. I know, BLAPHAMOUS! I understand what people like about it, but it's just not for me.
The reason stems from mainly one reason. The protagonist. Many people enjoy watching an anti-hero, but I usually don't. I understand this character's backstory has shaped his behavior. His terrible life has turned him into someone just wanting to survive. Who needs and wants narrow down to getting food and wanting affection via mostly wanting to touch boobs and date his boss.
I haven't finished, and I do intend to. And I am more than willing to make a new post if my mind changes. If it turns out that I fall in love with this series. I'm more than happy to say I'm wrong.

Mangaka Spotlight- Natsuki Takaya
Tumblr media
Most known for creating Fruits Basket, Natsuki inadvertently pioneered the shojo Manga genre. I wanted to take this opportunity to share more about the artist, rather than their art. I think the world over has taken notice and understands her artwork, but not much is known about her. And maybe that's by design, I respect that. Still, I'd like to share the readily available information about her. with artists, or people that are not aware of her as a person.
Takaya was born July 7th, 1973, in Shizuoka, Japan. The year of the OX! Her real name is Hana Hatate, but I'll continue with her pen name. Although she was born in Shizuoka, she was raised in Tokyo. She wanted to become a Mangaka as early as first grade when her older sister took up art. Her sister's influence proved successful because right after high school, she would make her debut as an Artist.
From my research, aside from drawing, Takaya also enjoyed playing video games. Such as Sakura Wars and the Final Fantasy series.
In 1992, at 18 years old, Takaya entered the professional mangaka scene working with the magazine called Hana to Yume Planet Zōkan magazine. Two years later, in the same magazine, she would create her first serilized story, Phantom Dream, from 1994 to 1997.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Phantom Dream 1994-1997
The insane thing is, during the production of Phantom Dream, she also worked on her second serialized Manga, Tsubasa: Those With Wings from 1995 to 1998. Let's just take a moment to admire all the hard work Takaya put in. This woman's career snowballed since 18 years old, and boy, that type of dedication is rare to see!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tusbasa: Those With Wings 1995-1998
Her third series would begin in 1999 with her magnum opus, Fruits Basket, and conclude in 2006.
Some things to note about the creation of FURBA. Her interest in the Zodiac came from a dictionary she was reading that referenced the Zodiac animals. Takaya also stated in interviews that the story of FURBA was the story she intended to tell through the entire process of production. That's so amazing!
Around volume 6 in the series, Takaya suffered an injury to her left hand (her drawing hand) that required surgery. Resulting in a brief hiatus. I could not find an explanation on how she injured herself, but I suspect it was a case of carpal tunnel, a common injury for artists.
In 2001, Furba went on to win the Kodansha Manga Award for best Shojo Manga. In the same year, Furba got its first Anime adaption, which was later rebooted in 2019. The series easily became the best-selling Shojo series in North America.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fruits Basket 1999- 2001
In between creating Furba, Takaya also created Songs to Make You Smile which was around 1998. It's a collection of short stories that were published in one volume in 1999.
It seemed after Furba, she took a well-deserved break before creating another series, Twinkle Stars, in 2007, which ended in 2011.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Songs to Make You Smile 1998-1999 (left)
Twinkle Stars 2007-2011 (right)
The following series was interesting to look up. In 2011 Liselotte and Witch's Forest was published, but around 2013 Takaya put the series on a hiatus due to an unknown illness. To this day, the story is put on hold. However, Takaya stated she would finish the series little by little.
The last few works, I'll bunch together, as most of them are similar. Fruits Basket Another was created by Tanaka to advertise the original Fruba series. And Fruits Basket: The Three Musketeers Arc 1 & 2 is a spin-off series with 6 chapters available. These seem to be digitally exclusive, and most likely just for fun.
Fruits Basket Another 2017-2020
Fruits Basket: The Three Musketeers 2019-Present
Ironically, I mentioned at the beginning I wanted to focus on the artists, rather than their art. But in researching Takaya much of her personal life is kept private. I believe from what I see, her Manga was her life. And it's through her work we learn the type of person she is.
I hope that whatever her current situation is, she is healthy and proud of all her accomplishments. I'm in awe of the amount of work experience she has created for herself at just the age of 48.
Natsuki Takaya, you will always remain an inspiration to many readers and artists alike. I can't wait to see what you accomplish next!

First Impressions
Since I decided to regularly review manga on this blog, keeping up to date is a priority for the sake of future content. This series will be called "First Impressions". This can either be "new" to me or recently published works.
Today we got two recent Mangas published this year.
Alien Area: Fusai Naba
Publishing Date: May 6th, 2022
Tumblr media
This one intrigued me. In a good way! It has to do with the plot involving Aliens, secret organizations, and the protagonist's right hand having weird powers.
From the available chapters, the story is about high schooler Tatsumi, struggling with multiple part-time jobs to support his two younger siblings. After a fire kills their parents, Tatsulmi bears the responsibility to raise and provide for themselves, putting his needs aside.
His life changes completely when Aliens break into their apartment to obtain Tatsumi's power. Turns out, that his right hand has been implanted with alien energy. He is then saved by government agents from an unknown sector, focusing on Alien relations.
He is quickly offered the opportunity to join their group as an employee. It's a win-win situation for Tatsumi. He can now provide for his family, with a stable job, and get more information on his powers.
But what will he have to do in the future?
I think this can potentially be a fun and action-packed series. I'm also a sucker for an underdog who is fighting for his family. I'll keep my eye out for this one and continue with the series.
Ruri Dragon: Shindou Masaoki
Publishing Date: June 13th, 2022
Tumblr media
Even though there is only one chapter out, I had a lot of fun with this Manga. I think people will enjoy the world of Ruri Dragon.
The story immediately begins with our protagonist, Ruri Aoki, waking up with horns on her head. When she let her mother know about her development, her mother is unphased. In fact, everyone in this world seems to be calm about the matter. That's what makes this story hilarious!
Her mother proceeds to tell Ruri that she is half-human and her father is a Dragon. As the reader most likely feels, Ruri is confused and has no time to process the situation. So Ruri just moves on.
Like any other day, Ruri attends school with her classmates and friends. Although faculty and students acknowledge her horns, it's not treated as a fearsome or freakish occurrence. Instead, Ruri becomes popular and her new looks are oddly accepted.
So much information can be extrapolated from one chapter alone, that I'll refrain from saying more. The author did an amazing job of setting up a relaxing and humorous tale with so many possible events to look forward to.
What other trait from her dragon father will she inherit? Will her father make an appearance? How did Ruri's mother and father meet? Are there more people like Ruri we will see in this Manga?
It's not often I'm invested in s story after one chapter. I'm very impressed and looking forward to what unfolds on Ruri Dragon.

Manga Spotlight
Doughnuts Under a Cresent Moon
Author: Shio Usui
Published: February 16th, 2021
Tumblr media
If you are a fan of Yuri, slow-burn romances, and adorable art, you are in for a treat with Doughnuts Under Cresent Moon. The best part about it too is that according to Anime News Network the series is slated to be completed by Volume 4. There are currently 3 volumes available.
The Manga follows two coworkers, who on the surface, are completely different, but in reality, have more in common than they think.
Uno Hinako is desperate to be perceived as "normal", in terms of female expectations. Being social, being into fashion and make-up, and finding a typical hetero-relationship. The reality is that she struggles in every aspect, excluding her genuine interest in fashion and make-up.
Sato Asahi keeps to herself, and is a diligent worker, with no interest in anything other than taking care of her little sister. As her sister's sole living guardian, it's understandable she is protective, but the series frames her relationship with her sister as all-consuming, to the point even romantic prospects are off the table.
Both women's routines and perspectives begin to shift as soon as they become friends. Hinako learns to be more honest with her needs and desires to improve herself. Asahi opens up to someone other than her sister and even opens up her home. They both become friends who support and respect each other.
And it's their friendship and growth as people that a romance starts to naturally take shape. Though unbeknownst to our protagonists, of course. And it's sweet to watch. One of my favorite scenes would have to be as Asahi and Hinako call each other more frequently, they both discuss their faults for neglecting their home. So they promise and report to each other every time they reach their goal.
Its moments like that were their subtle affection and interest in each other propels their romance.
Listen, I can go on and on. But do yourself a favor, and read this Manga. I think many people will relate to Hinako's struggles, especially, in the feeling they need to conform to norms. I also think people will appreciate that this is a story about full-grown adults with complex emotions and relatable motivations.
Doughnuts Under Cresent Moon is easily one of my favorite Yuri Mangas, and trust me, there are not that many.
