Magical Realism Movies
October is almost here and that means it’s time for my favorite kind of flicks: the not-so-tall tales, the witchy, the folksy, the fantastical, the magical kind that could happen to you or me at any time or place. These are my not-quite-Halloween magical movie favorites.
1. Practical Magic
Based on one of my favorite books by author Alice Hoffman and my favorite book-to-movie adaptation. Plant rosemary by your garden gate and listen to Stevie Nicks on repeat.
2. Fried Green Tomatoes
Need to get rid of a guy with no evidence? Feed him to the sheriff. Apply BBQ sauce liberally. Watch out for bee charmers and Kathy Bates. It’s gay. Like, really gay.
3. Big Fish
I am an absolute sucker for any movie with a circus tie-in. It’s not polite to discuss religion or politics at the dinner table, you never know who you’re gonna offend. (Also see Water for Elephants and The Greatest Showman for more circus faves).
4. Meet Joe Black
Death in disguise. That party at the end? Inspired my wedding. Will never look at peanut butter the same way.
5. Secondhand Lions
Because sometimes you need fantastic fairy tales and eccentric uncles to get through an otherwise troubled life. Don’t buy seeds from a traveling salesman. Used lions are ok though.
6. The Butcher’s Wife
I only recently found this gem that features so many of my favorite tropes and also takes place in NYC. Is pure 90s gold.
7. Age of Adaline
The fashion alone!!! Exceptional outfits. I love Blake’s voice. Keep it in the family, kids.
I mean, Robert De Niro as a fancy pirate and Michelle Pfeiffer as an evil witch? Claire Danes as a star and Charlie Cox in all his adorable ness? Sign me the fuck up.
9. Kate and Leopold
Need at least one modern-day time travel movie on this list. Every time I step into an Otis elevator, I think of this. Yes, it’s a pure romantic comedy. No, I don’t care. HUGH.
10. August Rush
Maybe the most serious on this list (featuring a primely unfunny Robin Williams as a villian), this movie is for music lovers and anyone who never gives up hope even when everyone tells you to.
Midnight in Paris
Field of Dreams
Just Like Heaven
Reblog with yours, I’m always looking for more to add to this collection. They’re simply perfect for a rainy fall day.

random ask of the day: what was the last album or playlist you listened to?
do you like to wear nail polish?
(i‘m sorry i keep missing days, and i’ll probably miss a lot this week since i’m going on vacation and won’t have much service)
Again, stop apologizing for missing days 🖤
I last listened to the Hadestown album. Still love it.
It depends on the color and if it's gonna have a design then it depends on that too. But even then I'm not sure cause just putting it on, the smell gives me a headache so

I'm seeing posts telling people not to take their feelings about this onto twitter, but I want to get more specific by saying this:
Don't tweet at or about Misha at ALL. I know a lot of it will be well intentioned attempts to show support, but now is not the time for that. Everyone just be quiet. Don't send your love or comfort or anything, just let him be. Of course there's a desire to reach out, and it really IS well intentioned. It's just not at all helpful right now for a bunch of strangers flood his mentions with condolences.
Stay on Tumblr. Please.

This is gonna be a weird comparison by my very first thought was "he looks like an excited puppy when the puppy is told they're a good boy" IDK WHY
thinking about the way ej just dropped his bag and ran to gina without hesitation like YESOHMYGODIWILL BE YOURFIRST KISS

Oh my God so this was foreshadowing wasn't it

WAIT PEOPLE DIDN'T LIKE THAT??
It was cute as FUCK
So I guess I’m alone in liking portwells ending???? I’m the only one rewatching Gina’s cute light hearted declaration. Why does everyone dislike it so much or think we was robbed. IT WAS CUTE AS FUCK. And fit for them perfectly. we know we wasn’t gonna see the kiss for multiple reasons already. Mainly cliffhanger usage.

so luke is incredibly overcome with emotion watching his parents read unsaid emily and singing it and then he poofs out. and when julie shows up he immediately tries to apologise for poofing out, and directly after, he thanks her for doing it. first off: the fact that the first thing he does is to apologise means that there's something about his nurturing that taught him to think that having feelings of any truly emotional sort is invalid and that he should have to apologise for it. manipulation from his parents? his teachers? we know that luke is a fairly not great at focusing person (likely adhd) and going to school in the nineties would have epically skewed his opinion of himself and how his emotions affect other people. the way he is, unchangeably, would have been blamed at every turn: he couldn't stop moving, he couldn't focus, he wasn't good enough. and throughout the show, he fights help. he doesn't tell the guys about his parents, he doesn't tell julie what he's truly feeling, he just generally is Bad At Emotions (which we know), and how much of that is due to how he was raised?

The Simpsons’ “The Good, the Bart, and the Loki”, a six minute special, really said, “We can do Loki better than his own show”, huh?
He looks like Loki, wears his colors, and has smarts and wit.
He gets to use his magic: shapeshifting, matter manipulation, cloning, transporting Lisa to Asgard.
His relationship with his family is tapped into, and he ends up with a new one, which apparently accepts and appreciates him.
And he has the same reaction to the TVA as we do.

I still remember seeing some posts about it both on here and on Instagram and after knowing Kenny ortega from descendants, I was interested, so I asked if I should watch it. It took me about a month to get around to actually watching it but it was legit the best decision of my life. I remember I had such low expectations cause I was kinda expecting it to be boring or really cringy. It was so beautiful from the beginning and each song I heard and each joke, I fell in love with the show more. I remember the feeling of the knowing it will take over and ruin my life but I was completely happy to let that happen tbh.
I also love how it doesn't do that thing of doing what's not expected of them just to have the unexpected cause that always gets tiring and I hate when they do that cause it makes for a bad story. Everything in Julie and The Phantoms felt natural, it flowed really well. I remember sobbing to Unsaid Emily and Stand Tall. I remember the chills I got when I heard Wake Up.
This is a show I will honestly never forget cause it was just so good and will never fully leave my mind.
I really hope Netflix renews jatp because the cast deserves it. Kenny deserves it. All of the people who helped bring it to life deserve it. But mostly cause us fans deserve it. We have been dedicated to this show for 10 months with no renewal and we still are going surprisingly strong for it. Jatp is the best show I have ever watched and I will love it forever.
Sometimes I think back to the expectations I had during when I was first watching Jatp and I’m just flabbergasted. Like to be fair the way that it just constant broke my expectations, proved them wrong constantly could be why I love it so much. Since I went in with those expectations and proved them wrong it made me love it so much more bc they did something different.
Even before I started it, I had looked up like the cast’s insta’s and stuff before watching it just bc I was curious and I had looked on Owen’s and saw this picture:
And I remember going “Hmm... a female lead and 3 male leads... hmmmmm... bound to be a love triangle here” granted I did know that Alex is gay going into it but that even still made me go “Ah, the other two are definitely going to be in a love triangle for main character” even more.
I think about that now and it is so strange to think about given how I know how Reggie and Luke are and it’s just so weird now. There are just all these tropes that have been set up by media that you just go into Jatp being like “Oh I know how this is gonna go” but then it doesn’t go that way and you’re just so surprised.
During when I was watching (for the first time) I was just saying to myself how I thought it was about to go bc of these tropes I had in my brain that we’re soooo used to seeing. But then, none of those happened and shocked me so much.
A show where mean girl isn’t just mean to main character for the sake of it? A show where mean girl’s boyfriend has a spin? A show where there’s not just an LGBTQ+ character just so they can say they have an LGBTQ+ character? Etc. etc.
You just go in with all these expectations of tropes that we’ve been conditioned to see in media and then when Jatp breaks those it’s so cool to watch. Then that means that you can’t guess what’s going to happen and it makes you so invested to see what actually does happen

I feel like two whole years could go by without anyone mentioning any kind of confirmation about jatp and the fans still left would be like “woohoo! Second anniversary of Julie and the phantoms! Cant wait till season two”

been thinking about nonbinary reggie who in the 90s only ever really wore smudged eyeliner with messy painted nails but always wanting to try being more gnc and then getting to the present realizing they aren’t limited to express themselves like before and excitedly bounce around stage wearing long lose skirts with ragged ends and trying out lipstick like they always wanted and bonding with willie over branching into more gnc styles and julie giving them free range to her makeup (if they promise to not make a mess) and luke and alex letting reggie practice their makeup skills on them and they paint each other nails and willie joins and. nonbinary reggie is just a great headcanon ngl
