Too Sweet

Tw: falling out of love, canon references to self harm, mentions of illness

Viktor liked sweet things.

Cake, chocolate, petit fours, bon bons, hard candy, if it was colorful and made with sugar, he probably loved it.

But sugar coating? That was something different. His life was full of harsh truths. “You’ll never run like the other kids.” “You’ll have a hard time finding scholarships.” “You’re lucky to have a job at all.”

Better to know. Better to understand how hard it would be and make a decision, than make a decision based on partial information. Better than to have hope.

So when he started his relationship with Jayce, he thought about it endlessly. He knew it would be hard. But he let himself have that small silver lining, he let himself hope, because against all odds Jayce loved him too.

And it was good. For a time.

Unfortunately, Jayce didn’t share his point of view on harsh news.

Jayce was an ever burning candle, whose emotions swung from enthusiasm to obsession. If he liked something he loved it. If he worked on something he finished it. And if something devastated him… well, Viktor knew that side of him all too well.

So maybe that was why, when the doctor visits started, Jayce became worse than useless.

Everything to Jayce, wasn’t so bad, could be worse, only the best timelines, the best estimates. And it was sickening. Everything he did felt like swallowing handfuls of sugar. Everything too sweet. Too grating. Like sandpaper or ashes on his tongue. It wasn’t useful! It lacked substance! Why? Why!

So he asked him to stop coming.

Unfortunately, that didn’t stop Jayce’s behavior. Everything became framed through the lense of Viktor’s illness. Jayce suddenly took a vested interest in his sleep schedule, his food, his work. New research refocused to braces and surgeries, instead of magic and engineering. Anything and everything to try and force health back into Viktor.

And he knew, knew, that Jayce did it out of love.

But that didn’t make it easier to swallow.

After a particularly bad day, Viktor sat in front of schematics to solve their newest problem with the gate. The whiskey, that he was advised not to drink was off to the side. Spitefully sitting where Jayce could see it.

He heard Jayce move before he felt him. It was their nightly fight, Viktor should go to bed early, Viktor didn’t want to go to bed.

He felt Jayce’s hands fall on his shoulders. He tensed for the argument to come. Like lines in a play the fight was pathetically predictable. Jayce’s fingers dig into his shoulders, feeling more and more like torture.

He heard Jayce sigh, it’s possible he was as sick of this as Viktor was, “Hey, don’t stay up too late. Alright?”

Jayce gave his shoulders one last squeeze, then dropped a kiss on the top of his head, before walking away.

And the relief Viktor felt. Like an all encompassing sigh, they weren’t going to fight anymore. Not tonight. Finally some peace.

And then suddenly

His heart

Felt it

Jayce was no longer his peace.

Jayce’s love had become too sweet for his tastes.

what stops you from writing more in your free time?

Oh for sure my own brain haha🥲 I love writing, but I feel like my creativity can definitely get pulled to my other creative pursuits, (which I also love!), which means less time for writing. I also get really inspired by others so with certain fandoms becoming less active, I also tend to slow down a bit.

Regarding Jayvik specifically, no other fandom has really gripped me as hard as them, so I’m still very much in the mindset of creating for these goobers, even if I’ve slowed down a bit. :)
