IT IS FINALLY DONE LADS!! The whole armour, with colour, Winter version and Summer version! It has been a blast, I've learned a ton and I can't wait to draw more Vimeses with this getup!

Thanks to all my online and offline friends and especially my brother for bouncing around ideas with me & cheering me on!

I'm immensely proud of how this has turned out and thank you all for the lovely tags and comments along the way! Hope you like the result as much as I do! :D

Behold! Two pages of Vimeses! And a Sybil! Featuring my Notes To Self. XD

It's fun to review how I've been figuring out his face. I used to draw him very pointy (see "old design" in the middle of the 2nd page), but my mental image drastically changed once I listened to the new audiobooks. So you could say that Pointy Vimes is Briggs-voice-inspired and Round Vimes is Culshaw-voice-inspired.

Anyway, the "ye gods" one is my favorite so far!

How do I even armour, part 4:

Now with short sword and a Summer version of the uniform!

Notes:

The Summer version is a little nod to Guards! Guards!, cause the watchmen all wear sandals in that book. And you know, since Ankh-Morpork experiences seasons, maybe the sandals are a Summer thing. XD It also features a leather shoulder cover instead of a cape and a short-sleeved shirt / tunica. There's still a gambeson, but a sleeveless one.

He also technically wears his truncheon on the right side of his body, along with some pouches, but I couldn't make it work in this perspective. Might do a sketch from the other side later, to figure out the placement of everything.

It ocurred to me that some of the newer Discworld fans may not know the delight that is the Discworld emporium:

They have some fun things like collectable stamps, gorgeous art prints, figurines, games, t-shirts and household knick-knacks. And some interesting special editions for books! (like the illustrated version of Guards! Guards! I recently got)

They call emails "clacks", you put your items in the luggage instead of the cart and they put stickers with Discworld stamps on the delivery box. I even got a delightful surprise in my delivery, which I'm not going to spoil here. Fun all round 10/10, be careful with your wallet. XD

I like to think this is just after they get back home, after some sort of official to-do (I imagine the helmet with plumes and the wig are discarded somewhere in a corner XD)

How do I even armour, part 3:

This is not a drill!! We have achieved helmet and cape!

Anyway, Notes:

What I previously called the "tassets" (the dangly bits below the breastplate) are actually "faulds". Faulds protect the hips and waist, tassets protect the upper thighs and are attached to the faulds. Thanks RathDarkblade for the correction!

I ended up fully redrawing the chainmail shirt, breastplate and the dangly bits (lol) because I ended up not liking what I did before.

For the ranks: I checked the Discworld wiki, which had some nice information about existing ranks in the watch! Except for the Commander, which is why I made that one up. I figured adding a crown over a pip, similar to Sergeant-at-arms would be fun. Especially because it tickles me that anti-monarchist Sam Vimes has to walk around with a crown on his uniform.

Now, to figure out where the hell to put that sword... (The perspective is going to be a nightmare, pray for me)

How do I even armour, part 2:

So excited to get to this layer, cause plate armour!! Consists of a breast plate and what I learned is called a tasset. And an idea for a helmet too.

Here's the inspiration run down:

The breastplate is modeled after 18th century Cuirassiers. They've got those handy knobs that were used to (I think) fasten the back plate to the breastplate. I've just drawn them higher up to also function as a cape-attachment.

The tasset is 100% rule of cool and a mix of an ancient Greek/Roman-ish looking thing and some plate armour elements. I've also made the chainmail longer.

The helmet is an unholy mix of ancient Roman, 18th century Prussian army and modern London police. We'll see if that works when I draw it on Vimes' head, otherwise I'll scrap it for something more classic like a late medieval kettle helmet.

Anyway, that's it for today's WIP! Helmet on the actual head, cape and weapons next, I think!

Which... any pointers on how you'd attach a short sword to this getup would be greatly appreciated!

How do I even armour, part 1:

I was thrilled to see that an overwhelming majority voted for WIPs on my last poll, so here we go! Sam Vimes armour design!!

I've been drawing this guy for over 10 years and I never sat down and tried to actually understand how armour works. So this project is an attempt at figuring it all out! Hence why I fully draw each layer of clothing before moving on to the next.

This one is the cold weather variant of the uniform and later I'm going to make a warm weather variant too. And both of them are going to be a kind of mix-and-match of ancient Roman and medieval European styles, with a good helping of "who cares, it looks cool".

What we have here so far are:

A gambeson (left) with detachable sleeves. It acts as a protective layer to prevent chafing from the armour. Sturdy, padded, think similar to a quilted jacket.

Leather breeches, which end just below the knee

Some sturdy, well-made boots (to Vimes's dismay)

Chainmail (right). It's a single piece that you put on over your head, relatively short for freedom of movement.

Leather gloves (cause they look really cool) for those frigid nights!
