Here are my 10 final diptychs I made for my personal project / graded unit for my HND year 1 course.

My overall review:

I have loved making this project because it’s all been my own work and I can change and have my own opinions on what happening. I know I started off with a completely different idea but I had to change it due to Covid-19. I am happy that it happened though, because I have learned and grow from this experience and I know things could of been better but I am happy with the images I have produce and I wouldn’t change it. Plus with the new skills I’ve learned I can used them in the future to make my next project better.

I have number the images above into the corrected order of viewing and I have also made two example DIY exhibition walls, because the HND classes were going to have a exhibition at the end of the year to show our personal project / graded unit work, so here is my mock up / fake exhibition walls, to show how it would of looked on a wall. I didn’t fully agree on a image print size as I never got to saw the room we would of used. So all the images / diptychs are all A3, but I was hoping to get maybe get them printed as A1 or A2 prints, maybe next year.

Image review - Organising

My review on my Organising images:

I had a few issues when shooting and editing because the lighting wasn’t the best, so it was hard to get the exposure, but when editing I made the selected images I liked for both image types, I made them look more a peeling, brighter and interesting.

After editing I went through all the selected images and picked out these two images above for this themes diptych because, I like the similar lighting as it’s shot in the same location and same light was used. I also like how it’s a kind of a before and after type shots. I tried my best to get the same framing with the object image as the portrait because there was a gap between shooting, to organising the cupboard.

My review on my Dying Hair images:

When I was shooting and editing this theme it was fine to do because with shooting part, the exposure and framing was both fine. With the editing part that was also fine because I only needed to edit the selected image from the both image types I liked only a little bit, to make them the way I wanted them to look.

After shooting I went through the selected images and I decided to pick these images above for my final two for the diptych because of the similar lighting because it was shot within the same room. I also like how they both have something purple within them and also both images sum up what’s actually happening.

Overall I am happy with the images I have created for this theme.

My review on my Workout images:

I had a few issues when shooting and editing because it was hard to get the right exposure for the room light and the screen light. I did have to used the radial filter tool on Adobe Bridge / Camera Raw. This tool helped a lot with creating this final images for this theme.

After shooting I went through and selected and edited the ones I liked the most and I ended up picking these two image above for my themed diptych, because I liked the framing and lighting within them.

Image review - Reading a book

My review on my Reading a book images:

After shooting and I was looking through my images and I picked and edited the ones I liked best and I decided to use these images above on the top and second row. I like this images I have picked because both images have a lot of details in them and there is two different lighting tones and different locations, because the portrait image was shot within my living room and the object image was shot in my mum’s bedroom.

I got feedback from my class lecturer and he ask me to re-shot my object image because the original one felt a little bit staged then in the moment, you can see my round 1 for the object shots and the staged image on the third / last row on the images above.

So after I re-shot the new object images, the new images were a lot better and it definitely works better than the first one I had, I think I went too creative with shooting this theme.

Image review - Cleaning Windows 

My review on my Cleaning Windows images:

After shooting when I went through all the images I shoot and I selected and edited the ones I liked, there was a few ones I liked for the portrait shot that were in different positions or angles but after narrowing it down, I decided to pick out these two images to use in my final diptych for cleaning windows because after editing I like the lighting within both shots and I also like how it shows what I wanted the images to be like and you know what’s happening within them.

Image review - Watching TV

My review on my Watching TV images:

After shooting when I was looking through these images, I picked and edited some and I decided to pick these two shots above as the two final images that I wanted use for this theme’s diptych because they show what I wanted to show in the first place. I like these images because it’s just in the moment and not staged. I might re-edit them slight and brighten them up a little, they are a little dull at the moment.

Image review - Cooking Dinner

My review on my Cooking Dinner images:

After shooting when I was looking through these images, I picked and edited some and I decided to pick these two shots above as the two final images that I wanted use for this theme’s diptych because I like how both images have red items in like as in the table cover in the object shot and the red rings on the cooker in the portrait shot. The lighting is also good because it’s natural daylight from the windows.

Personal Project / Graded Unit - Plan F - Living In Isolation  Image review - Playing Games (Round 2)

My review on my Playing Games (Round 2) images:

After shooting my second round of the playing games theme, I liked these images a lot more because of the lighting is better because it was shoot during the day with normal daylight. With the portrait image I like how it’s a close up of my mum’s hand with the dices because it has a wide range of colours and details, plus you automatically know it’s Monopoly from the colourful money and game board.

After a zoom call I had with my class and two of my lecturers, I had feedback to maybe re-shoot the portrait image of the playing game / these images, to have more of my mum or sister bodies in it instead of just their hand. I also thought about this after looking at the finish diptychs I made to show my class because this image theme was the only one with just one part of someone’s body i.e. the hand, all the other portrait images had full or mostly full bodies in them. Another bit of feedback I got was to just re-touch some images slightly.

Image review - Dishes (Round 2)

My review on my Dishes (Round 2) images:

After I shoot my second round of dishes images, when I was looking through these images they turned out a lot better because I shot it during the day and I tried to use the same placement and framing of the dishes and of my sister and I think it tuned out well.

I have decided to use this two images above for my diptych for dishes because the lighting is better and the framing is good and I think it shows off what I wanted.

My review on my Playing Games (Round 1) images:

When looking through this images and selecting and editing some, I have decided I wanted to re-shoot this theme again because it isn’t the best lighting because it was late at night when I shot this. These images are also a bit flat and not that interesting and after I edited them to look better, they are still dull and not nice.

So I will re-shoot this theme again but during the day, with only using daylight instead of using my living room light because they weren’t the best and I might also remove the table cover as it kinda matches with the wallpaper.

Image review - Make up

My review on my make up images: 

I decided to photograph my sister doing her make up because it’s something she used to do everyday before lockdown but she still does it sometimes now, just so she can feels normal again.

While looking through and selecting and editing I decided i wanted to use these images I created on my first attempt for this theme, as my final 2 final make up shots for my diptych.

I love this images because of the purple / pink tones within them and they work well together. Another thing is within the portrait shot the table ring light is illuminating her face and hand which is nice and bring the image together, plus it’s in the central of the image, so your eyes are drawn to it.

Image review - Dishes (Round 1)

My review on my dishes round 1 images:

I wanted to photograph someone doing normal daily life things like doing the dishes because it’s something that a lot of people need to do everyday. 

After looking through these images while editing and selecting the best ones from the portrait and object images, I realised that I didn’t really like the lighting within the images because I did the shoot late on at night like maybe 7ish. So i have decided I will re-shoot this theme again during the day when the lighting in better. 

I do like the placement and framing of both these images though, so i’ll do the same framing / photograph in the same places as this in the next round of shooting.

Illuminate - My final image and my other favourite shots.

I started to photograph images from this project but I was then told after my second round for shooting, that the Illuminate project wasn’t to be continuing and I didn’t need to create or upload any images because it wasn’t going to be marked. 

I have still created images for this project and I have upload my final image as the lighthouse with the blue tone onto My City. I created the lighthouse image by using 2 large books, with one on the back and one on the bottom underneath the lighthouse. The blue light was created by a mini toy lightsaber, that I just moved around the lighthouse with a 15 second exposure, Aperture f/11.0 and ISO 100.

Overall I really liked this project and creating these images above and more.

Personal Project / Graded Unit

Plan F - Living In Isolation

I changed my plan e idea for my personal project / graded unit from Outfits for events to Living In Isolation, because after speaking to my class lecturer Mark and getting his feedback from my recent shoot as in plan e, we both think it could be better to change some things within it.

My Plan F - 

This plan was inspired by thinking of ways I could make my plan e images better by using a diptych with a portrait image on left side and a object image on the right side, the object image will relate to the portrait. While thinking and speaking about it to my mum, she thought why shouldn’t I not do living in isolation, that would show how people get through a normal day in Isolation or things they would do.

My aim to create 20 final photos but as it’s a diptych there will be 10 final diptychs with 2 images on one diptych. You can see above in my pictures of my notebook of the ideas I am going for.

Some of the images I want to shoot are:

Dishes 

Playing Games

Make up

Organising

          etc. 

All the images I want to shoot i’d take a portrait of either my mum or sister in it doing chosen theme so for example like the dishes, i’ll photography one of them washing them. And I will also photography the dishes alone after they have dried. After I have shot both images i’ll picked my best 2 images and edited them and create the final diptych, but if I don’t like the images together I will re-shoot until i’m happy with it.

I have already started to shoot this plan and I am happy and motivated to final this plan all the way through to the end, so hopefully there won’t be anything changing unless I need to.

Personal Project / Graded Unit My class lecturer Mark’s feedback

I spoke to Mark over the phone and he give me feedback from my recent shoot as in plan e, we both think it could be better. We discussed to shot more in the moment and not staged with a background etc. and do a diptych, so 2 images on one sheet of paper. So we were thinking I could take a portrait on one side and the other side will be the objects that would be used to create / relate to the portrait. For example I could photography my mum putting her make up on in the mirror with her in her party wear, then the object image might be a table with her make up, Jewellery and a glass of wine or something, or a picture of her shoes and fancy bag beside them. 

He told me to look up these photographers:

Larry Sultan’s work of his project on Pictures From Home, from when he took pictures for his mum and dad in the house. He also told me to look up Linn Lundin’s work of her project of Goodnight Darling. I’ve looked up their work and I think it’s really good on how they created these projects and photos without leaving the house.

Personal Project / Graded Unit Plan E - Outfits for events

The pictures are from my first round of shooting this plan. I took pictures of my big sister called Stephanie and my mum wearing their normal casual clothes and then I told them to get changed into something they would wear for party.

My notes from when shooting:

I liked the set up but need to change the background.

I liked the framing of the images, that it shows just above the knee.

The lighting isn’t the best and also the camera exposure probably wasn’t the best either.

When shooting the party wear my mum said why not have her holding a glass to make it more real looking. So I give her a glass of water and I think it helped bring the photo to life more.

I need to get Stephanie to change her party wear, because I don’t really think it works well for this because it’s black.

Sonja Blietschua had her final images in black and white, so I tested it out and I asked a few people what they thought and everyone said it was better in colour.

I will be shooting more and will be changing some of my ideas and set ups. 

I have added screenshots pages from my notebook, that shows me thinking of ways to improve this plan.
