"Cruel" embroidery with embellishments over freehand machine thread drawing on Rayon "silk".
This pillow is a nod to old world arts. It is meant to look as if a young woman had first tried her hand at the decorative arts of the seventeenth century. Her heart is in her work though it is quite imperfect.

Jewels of the Sea - Cape Treasures
Cape Town, Republic of South Africa
Crazy quilting, hand embroidered motifs, couching, stumpwork, beading
For me, the brightest "Jewel" I've discovered while creating this project was belief in myself. To discover that I have the ability to make something that is "good enough" to share with others, to me, is a wonderful feeling. I have always said "I need a pattern" or "I don't create, I color in". But for this project I had to learn to take my ideas and make them a reality without someone looking over my shoulder or telling me exactly what color to use or where to stitch. Finally, I can say, "I'm an embroiderer." (I'm sorry, David, there is no attack submarine.)

Jewels of the Sea --The Crystal in the Sea
Ipoh, Malaysia
Stitching, crochet, stumpwork, back stitching
Jellyfish always inspired me a lot. There are a lot of different types with different colors, soft smooth textures makes it seem like a sparkling crystal in the ocean. Coral is another important element in the sea. I used coral and jellyfish in my piece as the main subjects. Started the piece with a black stitch technique but using a purplish blue thread as a signature of the sea. Coral are stitched using various types of stitching with cotton thread and metallic thread to bring the shimmer look in it. The jelly fish started with the tentacles using 3 types of stitching then to the top using a stump work technique with a bit of crochet at the end.

Glass Beach, Ft. Bragg, California
Turlock, California
Appliqué, embroidery, hand dyeing of wool
When I first heard about the challenge and the theme "Jewels of the Sea," my first thought was Glass Beach, Ft. Bragg, California. Collecting sea glass is something I really enjoy and I wanted to use the Swarovski crystals to represent the sea glass. Sea glass is found nestled among the rocks, in the sand, and plants between the rocky cliffs along the ocean in Northern California. Sea glass sparkles in the sun much like Swarovski crystals.
