This container was filled with a display of Muscari aucheri 'White Magic' (grape hyacinth). This clump-forming, bulbous perennial is great for a container and can then be planted out at the front of a border.

The delicate flowers of Tulipa acuminata (species tulip, horned tulip) mean the bulbs need careful placement to ensure that their display is not overpowered by the surrounding planting.

In this community garden in Dunkeld, Scotland, the Muscari latifolium (broad-leaved grape hyacinth) was creating a display. This perennial has a single leaf to each bulb, with deep blue-black flowers, topped by a crown of pale sterile flowers.

On the beach at Deal, Kent, is a Malus domestica (apple) tree growing in the shelter of a fishing hut. This has probably grown from a seed from an abandoned apple core and shows how tolerant of growing conditions this species can be.

In the shade of a woodland garden the Anemone blanda (winter windflower, Balkan anemone) were flowering. The flowers are an intense blue, but the species can produce shades of pink and white. This spreading perennial here contrasts with the silver evergreen foliage of Lamium maculatum 'Beacon Silver' (spotted deadnettle).

In the shelter of a Polycrub I really enjoy growing tulips as a cut flower. The star at the moment is Tulipa 'Rasta Parrot' (tulip) which provides an explosion of colour with twisted, curling petals, of irregular shape and in unusual patterns.

The sub-shrub perennial Erysimum mutabile (changeable wall-flower) produces a woody base covered with slender, lax stems that produce flowers in yellow, pink and purple. This species will thrive on a well drained location for a few years but is easily replaced by growing further plants from cuttings.

A useful small-leaved hedging plant is Lonicera ligustrina var. pileata (box-leaved honeysuckle). This low spreading evergreen shrub responds well to clipping and has small tubular cream flowers in late spring, followed by purple berries.

The early magenta-pink flowers of Bergenia cordifolia 'Purpurea' (elephant's ears) always look very exotic. This clump forming perennial is ideal for a dry garden with free draining conditions. The large, rounded evergreen leaves take on a purplish shade in winter.

These containers had great ‘cages’ made from the colourful woven stems of Salix (willow) and Cornus (dogwood) species. The planting included the pale coloured flowers of Narcissus 'Thalia' (daffodil) and contrasting dark purple blooms of a Helleborus x hybridus cultivar.

Great for a delicate display in a meadow, border or in a woodland garden is Tulipa sylvestris (wild tulip). This bulb only reaches a height of around 25cm and has yellow, lemon-scented flowers, in early spring.

In this sheltered garden it was great to see that Anemone coronaria De Caen Group (garden anemone) had naturalised in the lawn. These tuberous perennials need a moist but well-drained soil, in partial shade or sun.
