I think the closest Sonic has to a positive feeling toward Eggman, aside from the doc's schemes providing him a thrill, is that he thinks of Eggman as some crazy old coot, if you squint and turn your head.

He gives him Eggman nickname "affectionately." But the affection isn't, like, affection borne of genuine fondness, it's more like shaking your head and going, "Oh gee, egghead, what'd ya go and do this time?"

In SA2, he chuckles a little when musing, "That egghead sure likes mechanical things, doesn't he?"

It's very subtle, however, and doesn't preclude the fact that he dislikes Eggman for the most part. Sonic holds a typical teenage attitude, finding amusement in saying "Damn, this old man's off his rocker."
