I just love ‘The Beach” episode so much. You really get to see that through all her father’s manipulation Azula is still just a teenager. 

She’s as awkward as her brother and jealous of the attention her friend gathers so easily. She’s still hurt by the belief that her mother thought her a monster. You get a peek in that her relationship with Mai and Ty Lee isn’t just based on their uses, she genuinely cares about them. 

You see that maybe she really doesn’t hate Zuko. She includes him when asking for their party invitations and she pulls him away from their old house when he’s sulking alone. Azula even asks if Zuko’s mad at her when he confesses that he’s still angry. 

Azula is still manipulative and uses fear and emotional weaknesses against those she keeps around her. That’s what she was raised on, how she was taught. She’s smart, she knows that’s the best way to prevent herself from getting burned and thrown aside. But she’s also only fourteen and still seeks the attention and acceptance of her peers.

I'm always going to be an stalwart defender of both high art and complete trash. I also personally think that the best way to really open yourself up to the highs of the former is to be open to the guiltless pleasures of the latter.
